It has appeared on paintings, stained glass, Christmas cards, refrigerator magnets, and more tattoos than anyone can count.

There’s only one problem - Isaiah never wrote it.

Here’s what Isaiah said: Isaiah 11:6 “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.”

The wolf and the lamb. The leopard and the goat. The calf and the lion.

Even with a complete listing, the lion and lamb are not together - ever.

Isaiah 11:6 Wolf, lamb, leopard, young goat, calf, lion, fattened calf, little child.

Isaiah 11:7 Cow, bear, lion, ox.

Isaiah 11:8 Nursing child, cobra, weaned child, adder.

Isaiah 65:25 Wolf, lamb, lion, ox, serpent.

Why the Wrong Animals Actually Matter

This is not trivial. The image Isaiah constructed was deliberately confrontational.

A lion beside a lamb is powerful; but a wolf beside a lamb is something more terrifying. The wolf is the predator most associated with the destruction of the flock throughout Scripture, and used repeatedly by Isaiah. In John 10:12 Jesus even describes the hired hand fleeing with “the wolf comes and snatches them.”

Isaiah’s prophecy does not picture a gentle softening of nature. It pictures the complete inversion of the created order under the reign of the Messiah.

The most dangerous becomes safe. The most vulnerable is protected. A little child leads them all.

What the Text Is Actually Describing

John MacArthur, preaching through the Revelation vision of the Lamb, correctly anchors this passage in its full eschatological weight. In his sermon “A Vision of the Lamb, Part 2,” he describes Isaiah as having been given “the privilege of seeing ahead to the day when the curse on the earth would be reversed, when paradise would be restored, regained” — the wolf dwelling with the lamb, the leopard lying down with the kid, the lion eating straw like an ox, children playing beside vipers unharmed.

This is not poetry about a kinder, gentler world. MacArthur describes the millennial kingdom as “a restored and radically reconstructed earth” - paradise regained - the direct undoing of everything that fell in Genesis 3 (“The Climax of Human History,” gty.org).

R.C. Sproul, approaching Isaiah from his Reformed vantage, consistently described Isaiah’s prophecies as pointing to a government that would establish perfect peace, justice, and righteousness under the coming King; not a sentimental vision of harmony, but the sovereign rule of the Messiah over every realm of creation, from nations to the animal kingdom.

Both men understood what the domesticated misquote erases: this is eschatological promise, not inspirational art.

The Radical Revelation

The “lion and lamb” image flattens what Isaiah actually declared.

The true image is more radical, more specific, and more theologically charged. It describes a Kingdom in which not merely the strong become gentle, but in which the entire predator-prey relationship is abolished by the reign of the One of whom Isaiah 11:2 says, “the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.”

MacArthur notes that the same chapter that describes this Kingdom also describes the seven-fold ministry of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and fear of the Lord. The animals are not the point.

The King behind them is.

This is not sentimentality about nature. This is an eschatological promise about the coming King.

When you replace the wolf with a lion, you make the image prettier. You also make it smaller.

The Bible’s vision of the coming Kingdom is never smaller than what we imagine. It is always larger.

A Final Word

Even our best teachers sometimes use the popular shorthand. MacArthur himself, in a sermon on creation, slipped into “the lion will lie down with the lamb” the common misquote, before correcting to the precise text elsewhere in his expositions. The image is that deeply embedded in Christian culture.

But embedded does not mean accurate. And comfortable does not mean biblical.

The text does not exist to comfort us. It exists to declare what the reign of Jesus Christ will actually accomplish.

That is a far more terrifying, and far more glorious, promise than any greeting card has ever held.

All weapon points in the same direction. Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Houthis in Yemen. Militias in Iraq. Assad's Syria until it collapsed.

Four proxy wars. Four theaters. One sponsor. One demonic instigator.

The analysts call it regional hegemony. The diplomats call it destabilization. The wonks call it the Shia crescent. All of these explanations contain pieces of the truth. None of them gets to the root.

Here is what they all miss: Iran is not confused. Iran is not erratic. Iran does not have multiple positions in the Middle East. Iran has one position: the destruction of Israel. Everything else is infrastructure.

The Bible Called It 2,600 Years Ago

Ezekiel 38:5 reads plainly: “Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet.”

Persia. The Hebrew word is פָּרַס (Paras). It is the exact term the ancient world used for the empire occupying the land we now call Iran. No serious commentator debates the geography. Persia is Iran. Iran is Persia. The name changed. The land did not.

John MacArthur, preaching through Ezekiel 38, identifies it without hesitation: “Verse 5, Persia which is Iran” (”The Destruction of the Nations, Part 4,” gty.org). He places Iran explicitly in the northern coalition aligned against Israel in the end-times scenario Ezekiel describes.

This is not newspaper exegesis. It is not reading current events into ancient symbols. It is the plain, literal reading of a text that has always said what it says. The word Paras in Ezekiel 38:5 is not a code. It is a proper noun.

The Proxy Network Is Not Confusing. It Is the Strategy.

Iran does not fund Hamas because it loves Sunni Palestinians. Iran is Persian and Shia. Hamas is Arab and Sunni. Theologically, they have substantial disagreements. Historically, Persia and Arabia have been adversaries for centuries.

But Iran funds Hamas anyway; because Hamas’s mission is the destruction of Israel. And that mission is the one conviction that overrides every other consideration in the Islamic Republic’s ideology.

The same logic explains Hezbollah: a northern front against Israel. The Houthis: southern and naval pressure. The Iraqi militias: land bridge control and proximity to Israel’s eastern flank. What looks like chaos from the outside is a coordinated ring. The goal is encirclement.

Analysts miss this because they explain Iranian foreign policy through conventional geopolitical frameworks: spheres of influence, resource competition, sectarian rivalry. Iran’s leadership does not primarily operate inside those frameworks. It operates inside an eschatological framework; the belief that the destruction of the Jewish state is a divine mandate.

That belief system is ancient. Scripture anticipated it.

The Persistence of Satan

What the analysts cannot say is why the hatred is so durable; not only in Tehran, but in the newsroom, the university, the NGO, the protest movement, the entertainment industry, the corporate boardroom, the leftist political class, the legal apparatus, and the global multilateral institutions that rationalizes and supports all they do.

Persian-Sunni theological rivalry should make this alliance impossible. Self-interest alone should have collapsed years ago.

But the Islamic Republic is not acting out of self-interest. It is operating on something older.

Revelation 12 makes the architecture visible: behind every nation that has ever arrayed itself against Israel is a dragon who understands Messianic prophecy better than most seminaries do.

Satan knows that Israel’s national survival is inseparable from Christ’s return. He knows Matthew 23:39: “For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

He knows that if the Jewish people are destroyed, the trigger condition for the Second Coming is never pulled.

Iran does not need to understand any of that consciously. The hooks are already in the jaw.

They are simply being led.

What Ezekiel Actually Describes

The prophet describes a coalition of nations that marshals against Israel in the last days.

At the center is a great power from the north, aligned with a specific list of allies. MacArthur, in his 2012 sermon “The Salvation of Israel” (gty.org), describes the full picture: a massive force from the north, allied with Arab nations to the south, kings from the east, powers converging from every direction.

The military picture is global encirclement. The theological picture is the nations of the world arrayed against God’s covenant people in a final reckoning.

Ezekiel 38:4 says the Lord Himself draws this coalition: “I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out.” The nations do not choose this. They are led by a sovereign God into a confrontation that ends in their destruction.

The Gog-Magog coalition acts against Israel. God acts against the coalition. The text is not ambiguous about who wins.

What is striking is not that Ezekiel prophesied this. What is striking is that the architecture is visibly forming.

Russia (identified by most premillennial commentators as Magog) and Iran (Persia) are currently military and diplomatic allies. The coordinated Houthi campaign demonstrated that even distant proxies can be directed from Iranian command against Israeli targets. The ring is being built.

This does not mean the Gog-Magog war is happening now. It means the stage is being set.

What happens next between the United States and Iran, no one knows.

Whether this escalates into direct military confrontation, collapses into negotiated restraint, or pivots into something no analyst has modeled, that outcome is genuinely uncertain.

What is not uncertain is who governs the outcome. God is not watching this unfold. He is directing it. The same sovereign hand that put hooks in Gog’s jaw is the hand that moves every piece on this board, including the ones in Washington.

What Believers Should Do With This

Three things.

Stop being surprised. When Iran fires missiles at Israel, when another proxy war ignites, when another analyst says the region is “increasingly unstable” you are watching a pattern Scripture identified centuries ago. Surprise is a symptom of spiritual amnesia.

Stop being afraid. Ezekiel 38:22 records God’s response to the coalition: “I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur.” The nations arrayed against Israel are not winning. Believers who know their Bibles have already read the last chapter. Rest assured in that.

Start praying with informed urgency. The church inside Iran is one of the fastest-growing in the world, precisely because of state persecution. Pray for them. Pray for Arab governments that are increasingly choosing alignment with Israel over Tehran. Pray for the Jewish people who have no idea what the covenant God is orchestrating on their behalf. None of this is background noise.

The One Thing the Analysts Cannot Say

Every geopolitical framework eventually hits a wall.

The realist framework explains behavior through power. The ideological framework explains behavior through theology. Neither one can account for a God who moves nations like pieces on a board and announces the outcome before the game begins.

Isaiah 46:10 makes the claim no think tank ever will: “declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.”

Ezekiel did not write about the Middle East to give future commentators something to argue over. He wrote because God wanted His people to know who governs history. Not the Ayatollah. Not the Security Council. Not the proxy militias. Not the nuclear program.

When you understand Iran, you are not watching a foreign policy problem.

You are watching a prophecy being staged.

Unfortunately, this phrase does not mean what people think it says, and it does not belong to everyone who says it.

It isn’t that God stays away when pain comes. But, the words mean something else entirely - something most miss.

That line about everything happening for a reason? Martyn Lloyd-Jones didn’t buy it. While teaching on Romans 8, he said verse twenty-eight stood out like few others in all the Bible. Yet what people often say now isn’t what he praised. Their version mimics belief - feels spiritual - but asks nothing in return.

The Verse People Think They’re Quoting

Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Some interpret “everything happens for a reason” as if scripture supports the idea. This common belief connects fate with divine intent. Still, such thinking stems more from culture than doctrine.

Read it again slowly.

Notice three things the verse actually says, which the popular phrase does not.

First: It is addressed to a specific people: “those who love God... those who are called according to His purpose.” This is a covenant promise to believers, not a blanket reassurance for all of humanity.

Second: It says “all things work together for good,” not that all things are good, or that all things will feel purposeful, or that the reason will soon become apparent.

Third: The good is defined by “His purpose,” not by your comfort, your preferences, or your resolution timeline.

John MacArthur, in his exposition of this passage, pressed exactly this point: whether the situation is good, bad, or utterly incomprehensible, the believer rests in the settled confidence that God is doing His work, in His way, according to His will. The promise is not comprehension. It is confidence rooted in sovereignty.

The Danger of Vague Comfort

“Everything happens for a reason” is cross-religious. It is used by people of every faith and by those of no faith. It requires no commitment to the God of Scripture, no covenant relationship, and no need for Christ.

That alone should be a theological warning sign.

When a comfort can be offered indiscriminately to everyone, it usually belongs specifically to no one.

R.C. Sproul drew a sharp and necessary distinction. He separated what he called the proximate from the ultimate. On the proximate level - the horizontal plane of everyday human experience - bad things are genuinely bad. Sproul was direct: sin is bad, pain is bad, suffering is bad. Scripture never asks you to call it otherwise.

But at the ultimate level, Sproul declared plainly: “there are no tragedies for the Christian.” Every dark providence, every unanswered question, every grief that makes no earthly sense is being worked by the sovereign God toward an eternal good He has already defined.

Then Sproul turned the coin over. For the unbeliever who persists in unbelief, he warned, every blessing received from God in this life ultimately deepens the weight of wrath stored up for the day of judgment. Every gift ungratefully received, every common grace unacknowledged, adds to the account.

Romans 8:28 is not a human interest story about the universe being benevolent. It is a covenant promise to a specific people. The unbeliever has no claim to it. Offering it as though they do does not comfort them. It misleads them.

What Romans 8:28 Actually Offers

The promise of Romans 8:28 is not comprehension. It is confidence.

The believer does not need to understand why something happened to trust that God is working it toward a good that He has defined.

Lloyd-Jones captured the pastoral weight of this: the Christian can be certain about the ultimate, even when most uncertain about the immediate. You may not see the purpose. You may not live to see the resolution. But the certainty of the outcome is not in question, because God’s plan was not conceived after the fall, and it will not be undone by any trial you face in this life.

Romans 8:29 immediately clarifies what that good is: “to be conformed to the image of His Son.”

The purpose of “all things working together” is not your happiness. It is your holiness. Read that again; it is the key to all the trials and suffering believers endure.

MacArthur said it with characteristic directness in his sermon “Heirs of God”: the Holy Spirit is not interested in silliness; He is interested in holiness. He is interested in Christlikeness.

Every hard thing God allows into your life: every suffering, every loss, every long silence, is in the service of that singular purpose. Making you look more like Christ. That is the good He is working toward. That is the reason behind all His reasons.

And that is far better, even when it is far harder.

The Takeaway

Stop offering Romans 8:28 to people who are not in Christ. It is not their promise to hold.

And for those who are in Christ: the promise is not that they will understand the reason for their pain, suffering, and losses. It is that the Author of your story has not lost the plot.

The good He is working toward is not a comfortable life. It is a conformed life; conformed to the image of His Son, who suffered, who endured, who trusted the Father through Gethsemane and the cross.

Can you trust the outcome of your story to the One who wrote the beginning and the end?

The world, religion, and well-meaning people will all push counterfeits your way.

To discern true Christianity, you need to know what it isn’t.

There are seven contrasts here. Seven lines in the sand.

1. Religion vs. The Gospel

This is the most important distinction you can ever make.

Religion is man’s attempt to get to God through moral performance, ritual, and membership.

The Gospel is the truth that God reaches us through the perfect and finished work of Jesus Christ.

MacArthur makes his entire case in The Gospel According to Jesus on this single distinction: religion demands something from you; the Gospel declares something was done for you.

There is an absolute distinction here.

Religion says: “Do better. Try harder. Earn your standing.”

Jesus declared: “It is finished” (John 19:30).

Ephesians 2:8–9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith... not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Your church attendance and moral achievements will never save you. Good deeds may prove salvation. They will never produce it.

2. Intellectual Belief vs. Saving Faith

Many people believe about Jesus. That is not the same as trusting in Jesus.

Belief means acknowledging facts: the historical Jesus, the Resurrection, the existence of a God.

Saving faith is the complete surrender of your mind, will, and affections to Christ as Lord and Savior.

Sproul leaned heavily on the Reformers’ distinction between assensus (intellectual agreement) and fiducia (personal trust) to argue that saving faith is not knowing facts about Christ; it is resting the soul upon Him alone. (Faith Alone)

“Even demons believe and shudder,” according to James 2:19. And yet, they remain condemned.

Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Have you accepted facts about Jesus, or have you surrendered your life to Him? That is the real issue.

3. Guilt vs. Godly Sorrow

Not every feeling of guilt leads to repentance.

Guilt is the sense of condemnation when someone catches you doing something wrong. Godly sorrow is grief over offending a holy God through your sins.

Washer’s entire case in The Gospel’s Power and Message is that true repentance is not based on sorrow over consequences. It is sorrow over sin as a direct offense against a holy God.

Guilt drove Judas to sorrow and even suicide, yet he was still condemned (Matthew 27:3-5).

Godly sorrow led Peter back to Christ (John 21:15–17).

2 Corinthians 7:10: “Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”

When you sin, the response is not worldly guilt. Mourn that it displeased Him; then repent and turn away from it.

4. Justification vs. Sanctification

These go together, but they are separate realities.

Justification is God’s legal declaration of your righteousness; based on Christ’s perfect righteousness, which you received through faith alone. It happens once. It is complete. It never changes.

Sanctification is the ongoing process by which the Holy Spirit transforms you into Christ’s image. It is a gradual, progressive process that involves struggle, growth, and perseverance over your lifetime.

Sproul consistently argued that justification is the permanent ground of the believer’s standing before God, while sanctification is the ongoing evidence of that standing: the two are inseparable but still totally distinct concepts. (Faith Alone)

1 Corinthians 6:11: “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

You are not justified because you are becoming holy. You are becoming holy because you are justified.

5. Conviction vs. Regeneration

Many experience conviction without ever having saving faith.

Conviction is God using the Spirit to convict someone of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). However, it can be ignored and rejected.

Regeneration is God using the Spirit to give new birth. Only God can regenerate. It is a transformation of the whole person from the inside out.

Lloyd-Jones wrote that “conviction must always precede conversion; the gospel of Christ condemns before it releases.” But conviction is not the same as the new birth. One is the Spirit pressing on the outside of a closed door; the other is the Spirit opening it from within.

John 3:5–6: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Having a conviction of sin never saves anyone. You need to seek out the signs of genuine regeneration; namely a new passion for Christ and a hatred for sin, along with a newfound hunger for God’s word.

6. Assurance vs. Presumption

Assurance is a gift. Presumption is a trap.

Assurance is knowing that you are a child of God with a confidence based on Scripture, the internal witness of the Spirit, and the spiritual growth in your life.

Presumption is assuming you are saved based on a past prayer experiences, church membership, or family heritage; without ever examining whether genuine faith is actually present.

Washer stated it plainly: “The greatest heresy in the American Evangelical and Protestant church is that if you pray and ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart, He will definitely come in.” That sermon became a book. The indictment has not changed. (Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church)

Self-examination is even commanded by Paul in the Bible (2 Corinthians 13:5).

2 Peter 1:10: “Be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.”

Don’t presume you have the assurance of salvation; examine yourself to see if anything has changed in light of the Gospel.

7. Fear of Man vs. Fear of God

This contrast will shape every day of your Christian life.

Fear of man is ordering your life around what people think of you.

Fear of God is reverent awe and respect of God’s holy nature, sovereignty, and rights. This awe frees you from needing the approval of man.

MacArthur wrote in his Proverbs introduction that wisdom “is built on the fear of the Lord and the Word of God” not one virtue among many, but the foundation beneath all the others. (MacArthur Study Bible)

Fear of man is a snare (Proverbs 29:25). Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

Matthew 10:28: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

People will pressure you. Family, friends, and the culture will all tempt you to live contrary to the Gospel. The cure? Fear God more than you fear man.

These Contrasts Will Cost You Something

Even long-time believers fail to discern all the above contrasts.

They accept whatever the culture hands them, sit in churches that never address them, and build their worldview around false assumptions.

Ignorance is no longer a defense.

You know the difference between religion and the Gospel. True regeneration from mere conviction. Present assurance from past presumption.

That knowledge demands something: now you must act.

Examine yourself. Go deep in Scripture. Refuse to be deceived by counterfeits.

“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

He is faithful. Are you?

This should immediately cause us some concern.

The concept has its origins in the works of Augustine, with others crediting it to Gandhi.

It reflects something true and important.

Sinners are still image-bearers, they are still loved by God, and they should still be pursued with the Gospel.

But, when the phrase is employed casually, it undermines the very intentions of its originator.

The Verses Nobody Reads

Psalm 5:5 — “You hate all evildoers.”

Psalm 11:5 — “The Lord tests the righteous, but His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.”

These verses are almost always ignored. They contradict our tendency to create a God who is perpetually happy about everyone, no matter what their condition.

But, they are in the Bible.

And, they are true.

The Hebrew word translated “hates” in Psalm 11:5 is שָׂנֵא (śānēʾ): to despise, to detest with settled conviction. This is not impatience. It is not mere disappointment. Holiness does not shrug at defiance. It recoils from it.

Ignoring these verses does not make God more loving.

It makes Him smaller.

What the Phrase Actually Does

Used carelessly, “hate the sin, love the sinner” stops being theology and starts being a social platitude.

It reassures the unbeliever: God is fine with you. He just has one little thing He would like to kind of sort out.

But this misses the teaching of Scripture.

The unrepentant sinner and his sin are not separate categories before a holy God. He is not an innocent man trapped by unfortunate behavior. He is a willing rebel who loves the darkness and chooses it daily.

Romans 1:32 is direct: “Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”

That is not a description of someone who needs reassurance.

That is a portrait of someone who needs a Savior.

The Two Truths the Bible Actually Holds

Scripture holds two truths in tension that the popular phrase collapses into one.

Certainly, God loves the world in the sense of common grace.

Matthew 5:45: “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

But… God also has a settled wrath toward the unrepentant.

John 3:36: “Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

The Greek word translated “remains” is μένει (menei): present active indicative. It’s not that the wrath of God is coming someday. It already rests on the one who has not believed.

Right now.

This moment.

Paul Washer has argued consistently that a Gospel which softens God’s wrath against sin does not produce genuine repentance. It produces a comfort that was never offered.

The Radical Revelation

Sin is not an abstraction that can be cleanly separated from the sinner who loves it, chooses it, and refuses to abandon it.

God’s love for sinners is what sent His Son to absorb the full weight of His wrath in their place. That is not a greeting card sentimentality. It is the most terrifying and glorious transaction in history.

When Christ cried from the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” He was not reciting a psalm for effect. He was receiving the full judicial weight of God’s wrath against sin so that those who repent and believe would never have to bear it themselves.

That is precisely what the phrase loses when used without precision.

What This Means for How You Evangelize

When we strip wrath from the message, we strip urgency from the hearer.

A man who believes God is basically fine with him has no reason to flee. He has no fire to escape, no debt to pay. He simply has a mildly disappointed Father who would like him to do better.

That is not the Gospel.

That is moralism dressed in evangelical language.

The true Gospel offers something incomparably greater: a God so holy He can not overlook even one sin, and so merciful He sent His Son to bear every sin for those who repent and believe.

Both truths are necessary. Remove either one and the message collapses.

The phrase “hate the sin, love the sinner” is not wrong. It’s just dangerously incomplete.

A God with no wrath produced a cross with no purpose.

If the wrath was not real, neither was the rescue.

The moment you’re saved, a war commences.

Not against a nation. Against a system, a world order in full rebellion against God.

John does not offer a truce. 1 John 2:15 warns, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

The choice is binary. The line is absolute.

What Scripture Means By “The World”

Contrary to popular belief, the “world” does not refer to geography.

John uses the word kosmos to describe the entire degenerate system of values, beliefs, and aspirations behind the formation of a human society at war against God. John MacArthur defines it as “its treasures, its pleasures, its theories, its viewpoints… whatever element of its anti-God, anti-Christ ideology” that shapes how people live.

The world is a rival kingdom.

According to 2 Corinthians 4:4, “The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers.”

It’s not just a territory that Satan reigns over. It is a system of values that the enemy exerts daily pressure on.

Three Points Of Entry

John doesn’t hedge when he claims in 1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life, is not from the Father but is from the world.”

The desires of the flesh. The instinct for ease rather than suffering. Pleasure over obedience. Comfort over commitment. Satisfaction of the flesh. God says deny yourself and follow Me. These two voices are irreconcilable.

The desires of the eyes. Lust in its most basic definition. The world works hard to keep your eyes stimulated and your contentment hostage to what you don’t yet possess. Eve looked at the fruit and fell. David spied Bathsheba from the rooftop. The eyes are a doorway, and the world knows exactly how to manipulate them.

The pride of life. The subtlest lure of all. The pursuit of status, recognition, and acclaim. It drives men to build platforms and perform good deeds primarily so others can see it. R.C. Sproul identified pride as the root sin, the original sin, the sin that turned an angel into Satan. It certainly will not leave the believer untouched.

Two Loves Can’t Coexist

This is where scripture takes on a diagnostic role.

It is not grading your progress. It is questioning your standing.

James 4:4: “Friendship with the world is enmity with God.”

Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters.”

Two witnesses. Same verdict.

According to John MacArthur, “Loving the world is impossible for true believers because the world is an anti-God system, and you can’t love God and love the world.”

The issue is not perfect behavior. Believers still fall. The issue is the settled direction of the heart; where does your love ultimately run?

The Pressure To Conform

The world doesn't only tempt. It occupies.

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

The Greek word for this action is syschēmatizō, which means to be pressed into a mold. J.B. Phillips paraphrases it, “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold.”

Martyn Lloyd-Jones identified the dynamics precisely: worldly conformity happens when believers forget who they are: called out of darkness, belonging to a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.

Worldliness is not primarily a behavior problem. It is a memory problem.

Read that again. Worldliness is not a behavior problem. It is a memory problem.

The answer to this threat, according to Paul Washer, lies in remembering God’s mercies towards us, the source of our sanctification. It starts with knowledge before anything else. Scripture is clear, transformation happens by presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice as Paul commands in Romans 12:1.

The World Is Passing Away

Don't miss this.

1 John 2:17 claims: “The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Present tense. This is already happening.

Everything the world offers: wealth, status, pleasure, power, is perishing even as humans continue their pursuit. To give your heart to the world is to love something already dead.

Sproul consistently warned that the Christian lives with an eternal perspective that reorders all temporal priorities. The resistance, the sacrifice, the cost of non-conformity; these are not losses. They are investments in a Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

The Antidote

Trying to control behavior with rules and regulations is totally ineffective.

However, the believer does have responsibilities.

Saturate your mind with Scripture. A mind devoted to the Word sees the world as it is: temporary, deceptive, and passing. 1 Corinthians 7:31 warns, “The present form of this world is passing away.” A mind without Scripture is defenseless against a system it no longer sees clearly.

Let your heart be lifted. As Paul writes in Colossians 3:2, “Set your hearts on what is above, not on what is on earth.” Those who always think about the glory of Christ will not find themselves easily enticed by the world.

Remember the true cost of salvation. As Paul states in Galatians 1:4, “Who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age,” one who truly understands what Christ endured to rescue us from this present evil age does not run back to it willingly.

Where Is Your Heart Anchored?

The world will never stop pulling. That is not a shortcoming of the Christian life.

This is its battleground.

The question is not whether you will feel the tug. You will.

The question is where your heart is anchored.

1 John 2:17 gives a clear perspective: “Whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

This is God’s guarantee. It’s not the world’s offer.

And it will outlast anything the world is pawning.

“God works in mysterious ways.”

You may have heard this one. It is often used to discuss unanswered prayers, untimely tragedy, and unpleasant theology.

It sounds pious. It often serves as a cop-out for those who wish to discuss a God whose ways don’t make sense to us.

And, incidentally, it is not found anywhere in the Bible.

The Real Source

The phrase was originally used in a 1773 hymn, “Light Shining Out of Darkness”:

The opening verse:

“God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform.”

It is a lovely hymn, and Cowper was a man who wrote it from a place of deep suffering and deep faith.

It is a hymn, however, and nowhere to be found in the Bible. The theology that is often attached to this phrase is a far cry from the intent that Cowper originally meant to express.

What the Bible Has to Say About the Ways of God

The Bible is very clear about the ways of God. It is very, very specific:

Isaiah 46:10 “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.”

Romans 8:28 “For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Ephesians 1:11 “Having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

These are not the words of a God who works in mysterious ways. These are the words of a God who works in sovereign ways, with perfect knowledge, perfect intentionality, and perfect authority over all that comes to pass.

What We Avoid by Calling It “Mysterious”

According to R.C. Sproul, in his book *The Holiness of God*:

“Holiness provokes hatred. The greater the holiness, the greater the human hostility toward it.”

God’s actions do not necessarily conform to our sense of what is fair. They do not reward in ways we consider just. They do not always spare the righteous from affliction, nor the wicked from prospering — at least, not in the short term.

This is not mysterious. It’s a holy God working on a timetable that’s longer than our own.

We use this term ‘mysterious’ because we think it’s humble. We use it because we don’t want to have to deal with the harder term: ‘sovereign.’ We don’t want to have to trust a God whose ways we cannot understand — that’s much harder.

The Takeaway

The God of Scripture does not shrug His shoulders. The God of Scripture does not work in ways that are aimless and purposeless. The God of Scripture does not work in ways that are experimental, waiting to see how things will turn out.

He has declared the end from the beginning. His counsel will be carried out. His purpose will be fulfilled — with or without your theological comfort.

To get around the doctrine of election, the pastor said, “To God, a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day. God’s view of all of history is a flat line. God looks out over history, sees who believes in Christ on their own, and in that same instant writes their name in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

It sounded feasible, even biblical.

Of course, I knew that “a day is as a thousand years” was in the Bible, but I was troubled by the premise because it still put man in control of salvation.

And, that took away from God’s glory.

Yet, the corridor of time view is the main Arminian argument for refuting the doctrine of sovereign election.

Certainly God, in His omniscience, can look through all of history. If He can see who believes in Christ on their own, and in that instant chooses them for salvation, then election would be nothing more than God’s reaction to our personal choice.

The appeal of this argument is obvious.

It leaves man with his free will - in direct contrast to several Bible verses that say otherwise: John 1:13 and Romans 9:16.

It also boosts God’s reputation of fairness - as if He needed our help, and

we get to feel good about having contributed something to our salvation.

Win, win, win!

But, it also makes God a slave to our will. He surveys the field of human decisions, identifies the believing ones, and obligingly ratifies their choices.

The sovereignty is not His.

The initiative is not His.

The distinguishing factor between the elect and the non-elect is…you.

Doesn’t that also violate the whole “not as a results of works” concept in Ephesians 2:8-9? I mean, we’re good enough to accept Christ, and He in turn accepts us?

That’s not election. That’s ratification. That’s acquiescence.

We are called “the elect,” “appointed,” “the chosen.”

If we’re the ones making the determinations, shouldn’t we be called “the volunteers,” “responsive ones,” or “the decisive ones?”

Does not ratification do something the corridor view never admits: it makes salvation the sole province of the saved and robs God of His glory.

The debate lives or dies on one text: Romans 8:29.

Foreknowledge Is Not a Telescope

“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” (Romans 8:29, ESV)

The corridor view understands “foreknew” as omniscient advance-knowledge:

God observed your future faith and acted on it. That reading of “foreknew” imposes a modern Western definition of knowing on a biblical concept that never bore it.

Biblical knowing is never mere cognitive awareness. It’s relational. Covenantal. Even intimate.

This is impossible to miss in Genesis 4:1 when it says, “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived.” Nobody over the age of 14 interprets those words intellectually. This does not mean that Adam knew who Eve was. Adam was in the most intimate relationship that human beings can have with each other.

The Greek for “foreknew,” γινώσκω (ginōskō), simply takes this directly from the Hebrew יָדַע (yada). Paul creates the word προγινώσκω (proginōskō) out of the same root. He simply adds the prefix “προ”, which means before. Before time. Before creation. Before you existed. Before you could even do good or choose for yourself.

Foreknew is not the same as God looked ahead and saw your faith. It is the same as God set His covenantal love upon you before the foundation of the world.

Fore-love, not fore-sight.

The concept of foreknowledge being the same as omniscience is so theological-sounding. But, in reality, it takes away the sovereignty of God. It is no longer an act of covenantal love.

The Flat Continuum Argument Fails Twice

2 Peter 3:8 is about God’s patience with our concept of time. Peter is simply explaining to the early Church why the Lord has not yet returned. He is giving a reason, but that reason is not related to salvation.

But here’s the rub. Revelation 13:8 tells us names were written in the Lamb's Book of Life "before the foundation of the world."

Not at the moment you believe. Before the foundation of the world. Before any faith existed to foresee.

Even on a flat continuum, causality still runs in one direction. If your faith caused the writing, the writing cannot come before your faith. Yet Scripture says it does.

The Chain Has No Human Link

Let’s consider the verbs in Romans 8:29-30: “Those whom He foreknew he also predestined... those whom he predestined He also called, and those whom He called he also justified, and those whom He justified he also glorified.”

All of these verbs have only one subject: God.

God is acting.

God is not reacting to something that man is doing.

God Uses Volitional Language, Not Observational Language

This is why the Corridor View cannot survive.

Acts 13:48 is our final word: “as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.” Not “as many as believed were appointed.” Luke’s sequence is deliberate.

The Greek word “tetagmenoi” is a perfect passive participle. It means “already appointed,” appointment complete, before any believing took place. Faith follows appointment. Appointment does not follow faith.

God doesn’t look down the corridor and ratify. He appoints, and the appointed believe.

What This Does to Worship

The whole of Ephesians 1 is building up to one refrain, repeated three times: “to the praise of his glorious grace.” Not to the praise of your wise choosing. Not to the praise of your spiritual discernment. To the praise of His grace alone.

The corridor model cannot arrive at this conclusion. If the election is ultimately up to your decision, then the glory of your salvation is ultimately up to something in you. You made the right decision. Someone else didn’t. What sets you apart is you.

The whole system of salvation was designed to keep this from happening, according to 1 Corinthians 1:29: “so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.” But the corridor model slips this in anyway.

Worship the Author, Not the Responder

Romans 8:29 does not say that God saw your faith and then responded. It says God fore-loved you and then determined your destiny before you existed.

Revelation 13:8 does not say that God saw your choice and then recorded it. It says your name was recorded before the foundation of the world.

Acts 13:48 does not say that the believers were then appointed. It says that the appointed then believed.

The Author of your salvation is not a careful observer of your spiritual performance.

The Author of your salvation is the sovereign God of the Bible, who set His covenantal love upon you before time began. Not because He saw something in you that He wanted to choose. But because He chose you of His own desire.

The corridor view does not have the option of saying that. It can only say that God saw something. God responded. God recorded it.

God is either the Author of your salvation or merely a witness to it.

The corridor view makes Him the latter.

Drop the phrase “money is the root of all evil” into any conversation, and watch how quickly everyone nods.

They are confident it’s in the Bible. They are equally sure they know what it means.

They are wrong on both accounts; that error has done enormous theological damage.

What Paul Actually Wrote

1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”

A few words dropped — and everything changes.

The first: “the love of.” Paul is not indicting money itself. He is accusing the heart oriented toward the pursuit and possession of money as an end in itself.

The second: “kinds of.” This is not a declaration that money is the singular taproot of every evil in the universe. It is a warning that the love of money opens a door to a wide range of destructive consequences.

Abraham Was Rich. So Was Job.

Money is morally neutral.

Abraham was extraordinarily wealthy, “very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold” (Genesis 13:2). It was God who gave him that wealth.

Job was the wealthiest man in his region.

God allowed Satan to strip it all: his livestock, his servants, his children, even his health. Every visible sign of blessing gone. But when Job’s faith held, God restored him two times over: more sons and daughters, twice the livestock, a greater legacy than before (Job 42:10–17).

God gave wealth. God took it. God restored it, He even multiplied it.

The Bible does not condemn wealth. It confronts the worship of it.

The Real Target

Charles Spurgeon wrote in John Ploughman’s Talk: Plain Advice for Plain People:

“Many save their silver, but lose their souls. Many a man’s soul has been ruined by his great love of money, although he had but little money to love.”

Spurgeon put it plainly: a man can save his silver and lose his soul. He can have almost nothing and still be ruined by his love of it.

The issue was never the amount. It was always the grip.

The man whose thoughts are consumed with accumulation, whose identity is tied to his net worth, whose generosity is calculated and minimal, that man is in the crosshairs of this verse.

Matthew 6:24: “You cannot serve God and money.”

Note the verb: serve. The question is not what you have.

It’s what has you.

The Takeaway

This distortion has produced guilt in the generous and theological cover for the covetous.

The God of the Bible has no quarrel with your bank account. He has everything to say about what your bank account has on you.

What does your relationship with money reveal about what you actually trust?

And it is, without a doubt, the most difficult.

There is a fault line running through evangelical Christianity that most people in the pew never see.

It doesn't split liberals from conservatives. It doesn't divide the secular from the devout. It runs straight through communities of serious, Bible-loving, Christ-exalting believers. John MacArthur named it in a single sentence: “The lordship controversy is a disagreement over the nature of true faith.”

It has been argued by brilliant men who love Scripture. Men whose books line the shelves of Reformed seminaries and Dispensational schools alike. Men who will spend eternity together, but who drew different conclusions about what it means to believe.

You need to understand what both sides actually believe, because the caricatures are worse than the disagreement.

Where Both Sides Agree

Before the division, the common ground. Both positions affirm:

Justification is by grace through faith alone, not by works.

Christ’s death is the only sufficient payment for sin.

Eternal life is a gift; no sinner earns it.

God requires no pre-salvation moral reformation.

Christians can and do sin, sometimes seriously.

This is not a debate between the gospel and a false gospel. Both traditions contain men who have trusted Christ, preached the cross, and given their lives to the Word.

The disagreement is over the nature of saving faith; that distinction, while internal to evangelicalism, carries enormous pastoral weight.

The Lordship Position

John MacArthur set off the modern controversy with The Gospel According to Jesus in 1988. His case was simple and pointed: Jesus never offered a low-cost, no-commitment gospel. He called sinners to follow Him, not merely decide about Him.

The Lordship position rests on nine convictions (as articulated by Grace Community Church):

Faith and repentance are inseparable. The gospel calls sinners to “repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). Repentance is not a synonym for faith; it is a turning from sin that God Himself grants (2 Timothy 2:25).

Salvation is entirely God’s work. Even faith is a gift (Ephesians 2:1–5, 8). God does not offer a substandard faith that might later expire.

The object of faith is Christ Himself — not merely a creed or a promise. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). The call is to trust Him, not only facts about Him.

Saving faith involves personal commitment. Faith is not passive intellectual assent; it is wholehearted trust in Christ personally (2 Corinthians 5:15). All true believers follow Jesus (John 10:27–28).

God’s gift of eternal life is comprehensive. It includes all that pertains to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3; Romans 8:32), not merely a ticket to heaven. Practical sanctification is not an optional post-conversion upgrade.

Christ cannot be divided. He is not offered as Savior-only with Lordship optional for a later upgrade. “Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out” (John 6:37), but coming to Him means coming to Him as He is.

Surrender to Christ’s lordship is unconditional. Jesus is Lord of all; the faith He demands involves full surrender (Romans 6:17–18; 10:9–10). Christ does not bestow eternal life on those whose hearts remain set against Him (James 4:6).

Real faith endures. Genuine saving faith cannot be defective or short-lived; it perseveres (Philippians 1:6; cf. Hebrews 11). A faith that completely ceases is no saving faith at all.

Genuine faith produces fruit. Not as the cause of salvation, but as its inevitable evidence. “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments” (1 John 2:3). As MacArthur states plainly: obedience is the inevitable manifestation of saving faith.

The pastoral danger Lordship proponents identify is sobering: a church filled with people who made decisions but were never transformed. Justification without sanctification. A profession without a possessor.

The Free Grace Position

The Free Grace tradition is not populated with theological lightweights. Charles Ryrie, longtime professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, author of the Ryrie Study Bible, scholar of the first order, wrote the most rigorous response to MacArthur: So Great Salvation (1989).

Lewis Sperry Chafer, the founder of Dallas Theological Seminary, held Free Grace convictions and embedded them in the institution’s theological DNA. Bob Wilkin, founder of the Grace Evangelical Society, has argued the position in the Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society for decades. Dave Anderson, in Free Grace Soteriology, argues it with academic precision. These are not careless men. They are scholars who gave their lives to the Word of God and arrived at their conclusions through serious exegesis, not through a desire to make the gospel easy.

The Free Grace position rests on eight convictions (synthesized from the primary works of Ryrie, Wilkin, and Anderson — the tradition's most rigorous defenders):

Faith is trust in Christ’s promise of eternal life; nothing more, nothing less. Adding repentance-as-behavioral-change or lordship-submission to faith adulterates grace with works. The gospel invitation is a free gift received through trust alone (Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 4:5). Any condition beyond faith corrupts the freeness of grace itself.

The Gospel of John is the Bible’s primary evangelistic document; and the word “repent” never appears in it. John states his purpose explicitly: “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30–31). If behavioral repentance were required for salvation, John’s silence is inexplicable. Free Grace theologians argue this omission is exegetically decisive; the evangelist most concerned with bringing people to faith never once issued a call to behavioral repentance.

Repentance (metanoia) means a change of mind, not a change of behavior. Ryrie argues that on the day of Pentecost, Peter called the crowd to change their minds about who Jesus was: from a blasphemer to the God-man Savior. That is the repentance that saves (Acts 2:38). Behavioral change is the fruit of repentance, not its definition. Conflating the two imports a human work into the gospel invitation and corrupts the terms of salvation.

Justification is a forensic declaration; it must be distinguished from sanctification. God declares the believing sinner righteous on the basis of Christ’s imputed righteousness (Romans 4:5; Romans 5:1). Justification is complete and final at the moment of faith. Sanctification, the ongoing process of growth, is real but categorically separate. Demanding visible evidence of sanctification as proof of justification collapses a distinction Paul labored throughout Romans and Galatians to establish.

The object of saving faith is the promise of eternal life, received at a specific moment. “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life” (John 6:47). “Whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Free Grace theologians argue these promises are unconditional; the only condition is belief. Eternal life is a present possession, not a future reward contingent on perseverance or ongoing surrender.

The “carnal Christian” is a biblical category, not a theological convenience. Paul addresses the Corinthians as genuine believers who are living like the unsaved (1 Corinthians 3:1–3). Free Grace theologians argue that prolonged spiritual stagnation in a true believer is a real and tragic possibility; but, it is not evidence of a false profession. Dismissing this category as exegetically untenable, they contend, requires overriding Paul’s plain language to people he explicitly calls brothers.

Every Christian will bear fruit — but fruit may not always be visible to human observers. Ryrie is explicit: “Every Christian will bear spiritual fruit. Somewhere, sometime, somehow. Otherwise that person is not a believer.” Free Grace is not a license for fruitlessness. However, Free Grace theologians argue that what qualifies as fruit is broader and sometimes less observable than Lordship advocates allow. Subjective fruit inspection by outside observers is an unreliable and pastorally dangerous standard for assessing the reality of another person’s salvation.

Assurance comes from the promise, not from performance. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36). Free Grace theologians note that the same verse’s second clause — rendered by the ESV as “whoever does not obey” — reflects a disputed translation of the Greek apeithōn, which they argue is better rendered “whoever does not believe.” On their reading the verse is a pure faith contrast: belief yields life; unbelief yields wrath. No obedience metric is in view. Assurance is therefore grounded in God’s word to the one who believes, not in the believer’s track record of surrender, fruit production, or observable transformation (1 John 5:13). Grounding assurance in evidence of sanctification, they argue, turns the believer perpetually inward — away from Christ and toward self-assessment — producing exactly the doubt and introspection the promise was designed to eliminate.

The pastoral concern Free Grace advocates raise is equally serious: a church full of doubting, introspective believers who can never be certain they are saved because they can never be certain they have surrendered enough. Ryrie’s concern was not to cheapen grace but to protect it; to ensure the ground of assurance remained the promise of God and not the performance of man.

Where the Real Division Lives

Both sides agree Jesus is Lord.

Both sides agree faith without fruit is dead.

The fault line is narrower than the polemics suggest; yet, it is real.

On repentance: Lordship says turning from sin is inseparable from genuine saving faith. Free Grace says behavioral repentance added to faith corrupts the gospel’s freeness.

On lordship: Lordship says you cannot receive a divided Christ, Savior without Master. Free Grace says requiring submission to Christ’s authority before salvation mixes discipleship with justification.

On assurance: Lordship grounds assurance in the fruit of regeneration over time. Free Grace grounds assurance in the promise of God to those who believe, full stop.

On the “carnal Christian”: Lordship says this category is exegetically untenable: a true believer cannot live indefinitely as though unregenerate. Free Grace allows for the possibility of prolonged spiritual stagnation in a genuine believer.

The Pastoral Stakes

This debate is not academic. It shapes how you evangelize, how you counsel, and how you disciple.

A Lordship evangelist calls sinners to repent and submit. A Free Grace evangelist calls sinners to trust. The content of the gospel invitation differs at the point of demand.

A Lordship pastor counseling a professing Christian living in unrepentant sin may question whether that person was ever regenerated. A Free Grace pastor will call the same person to discipleship, but may not question the reality of their salvation.

Neither pastor takes sin lightly. But they may arrive at different pastoral judgments.

My Position — And Why It Isn’t Simple

I hold the Lordship position. I want to be honest with you about what that means, and what it costs me to say it.

Charles Ryrie was not a lightweight. He held a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, taught for decades at Dallas Theological Seminary, and wrote some of the most carefully reasoned theology in the twentieth century. Lewis Sperry Chafer founded DTS. Dave Anderson is a serious exegete. These men gave their lives to the Word of God. They were not cutting corners on grace; they were guarding it as they understood it.

That is precisely what makes this debate hard.

If Free Grace theology were promoted by careless men, I could dismiss it quickly.

It isn’t.

And I cannot pretend that Ryrie’s concern is without force: that a Lordship framework, taken too far, can leave sincere believers perpetually questioning whether they have surrendered enough, whether their fruit is sufficient, whether their commitment was real. That is a genuine pastoral danger.

I am also aware that I cannot always draw a clean line between where Free Grace truth ends and Lordship truth begins. Both traditions affirm that faith saves. Both affirm that fruit follows. The argument is over what the summons of the gospel includes; and honest men have read the same texts and landed differently.

What I keep returning to is this: the texts will not let me rest in a gospel with no summons.

Matthew 16:24 records Christ’s own invitation: “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” That is not the discipleship curriculum. That is the door.

James 2:17 does not soften it: “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” Dead faith is not saving faith. The fruit is not the root, but a root producing no fruit is not living.

Romans 10:9 frames everything: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Lord is in the text. It is not an elective.

Arminianism does not trouble me: God’s sovereignty over salvation answers it.

Covenant Theology also does not trouble me: literal, consistent interpretation answers it.

Free Grace troubles me. The fragments of truth it holds are real enough that I cannot yet draw a clean line between where it ends and where Lordship begins.

I land on Lordship not because I think Free Grace men are outside the faith; I do not.

I cannot find a Bible that offers a Christ you may receive without receiving Him as He is. Savior and Lord are not two products from the same shelf. He is one Person. You come to Him whole; or you have not come to Him at all.

Where exactly the line falls between a tender, wavering faith and a dead one — God knows.

I do not.

That uncertainty keeps me humble about individuals. It does not move me from the position.

Said at Every Funeral, Hospital Bed, and Crisis.

You have heard it before. You may have said it yourself.

“God won’t give you more than you can handle.”

It sounds tender. It sounds like faith.

But…it’s not in the Bible.

And worse, it is the kind of half-truth that collapses precisely when someone needs solid ground the most.

The Misquoted Verse

The phantom source is 1 Corinthians 10:13 — “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability...”

Now, read that carefully.

Paul is writing about temptation; the assault of sin against the believer. He is not writing about cancer. He is not writing about grief, financial collapse, or personal tragedy.

The passage is about the faithfulness of God to provide a way of escape from sin’s enticements. That is a powerful promise. It’s just not the promise people think it is.

The Man Who Blew Up the Cliché

The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 10:13.

He also wrote 2 Corinthians 1:8–9 — “We were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself... But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.”

Paul is the living refutation of the cliché.

He was not given what he could handle. He was crushed beyond his own capacity to endure — on purpose — so that he would learn to trust God rather than himself.

That is a radically different theology than the greeting card version.

What God Actually Promises

God does not promise manageable loads. He promises His presence in the unmanageable ones.

2 Corinthians 12:9 — “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”

The promise is not that the weight will lighten.

The promise is that His strength enters precisely where yours runs out.

This is far better news than the cliché — if you can receive it.

The Takeaway

Stop telling suffering people that God measured their pain and decided they could handle it.

Instead, be authentic.

Jefferson Fisher, a Defense Attorney and New York Times’ best-selling author on Communications, has the following suggestions when dealing with someone who is in crisis or grieving:

1. Stop saying “Let me know if there’s anything I can do.” You just transferred the burden to a grieving person. That’s not help. That’s a chore assignment. Don’t ask. Just act. Send food. Mow the lawn. Slip them an envelope. Show up. The people who need help most are the least equipped to ask for it. So don’t make them ask.

2. Don’t ask for details; if you’re not in the know, that’s probably for a reason. Worse yet, don’t ever opine on how they should have known or done something different. Instead just let them know that you care and are praying for them.

3. Don’t try to be positive and say things like, “God won’t give you more than you can handle,” or “at least they’re in a better place” or “everything happens for a reason.” Instead emphasize and agree with their pain. Say things like “I’m really sorry you have to go through this” or “this is terrible” or “I’m so sorry this happened to you.”

The world doesn't need more misinformed theologians at the graveside; it needs more people who show up with a casserole and shut up.

Where have you been told to “handle it” when what you actually needed was permission to collapse before God?

You can’t audit every sermon. But you can ask some questions, and get most of the answers you need from just three verses.

In a previous post, I identified the three primary theological divisions within conservative evangelicalism: Calvinism vs. Arminianism, Dispensationalism vs. Covenant Theology, and Lordship Salvation vs. Free Grace.

Too many teachers won’t tell you where they stand. That forces you to find out for yourself.

Here’s how.

A Word on Method

This approach works best with books, commentaries, and written studies.

Regarding sermons, a preacher can deliver years of topical messages without ever being forced to interpret certain verses directly. Sermons are contextual and pastoral; a skilled teacher can navigate around difficult texts indefinitely.

A commentary cannot. When an author reaches one of these passages, they have no choice but to deal with it. Their interpretation is on record, in writing, with their name on the cover.

The same principle applies in a pastor search. A pastoral candidate interview is one of the most consequential theological conversations a church will ever have, and most search committees never ask the right questions. These six verses give a search committee a structured, Scripture-based framework for understanding exactly where a candidate stands before he ever steps into a pulpit. Ask him to walk you through John 6:44. Hand him Romans 11:26 and let him interpret it. The answers will tell you more than his résumé ever will.

Calvinism vs. Arminianism: John 6:44

John 6:44 — “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

The entire Calvinism debate compresses into one Greek word: helkō — draws.

The Calvinist reads it as effectual, sovereign compulsion; the same word used in Acts 16:19 for forcible dragging. The Arminian softens it to an invitation that man can resist.

If the author says God “woos” — Arminian. If he says God draws irresistibly — Calvinist.

One word. Maximum diagnostic value.

Bonus Verse: Acts 13:48

Acts 13:48 — “And as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.”

Notice the sequence. They believed because they were appointed, not the reverse. The Calvinist reads this as straightforward: God’s appointment precedes and produces faith. The Arminian is forced to reframe it as God foreseeing who would believe and appointing them on that basis.

If you’re still unsure after John 6:44, Acts 13:48 will settle it. Watch whether the author reverses the order or explains it away with “God looking down the corridor of time.”

Dispensationalism vs. Covenant Theology: Romans 11:26

Romans 11:26 — “And in this way all Israel will be saved.”

Does the author understand “Israel” as ethnic, national Israel with a future literal restoration? Or does he redefine it as the Church, “spiritual Israel”?

That single interpretive move reveals his entire hermeneutic; how he’ll handle Old Testament prophecy, Daniel, and Revelation.

One critical distinction worth noting: Reformed does not mean Dispensational only. R.C. Sproul, one of the most theologically rigorous men of the last century, was Covenant Theology, not Dispensational. He and John MacArthur agreed on Calvinism and Lordship Salvation. They diverged sharply on Romans 11:26.

Knowing the difference matters.

Bonus Verse: Revelation 20:4

Revelation 20:4 — “They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”

Does the author take the thousand years literally — a future, physical reign of Christ on earth? Or does he spiritualize it as symbolic of the Church age?

Dispensationalists insist on the literal reading. Covenant theologians typically recast it as figurative. If Romans 11:26 left any ambiguity, Revelation 20:4 should remove it.

Lordship vs. Free Grace: James 2:17 + Matthew 7:23

James 2:17 — “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

Matthew 7:23 — “And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you.’”

Watch for how the author interprets James 2:17. Free Grace theologians often argue that dead faith still saves — it just results in lost rewards at the Bema judgement. On Matthew 7:23, watch whether the author says these people lost salvation or never had genuine faith.

The Lordship position is unambiguous: Christ never knew them. Their profession was always false.

Bonus Verse: 1 John 2:3-4

1 John 2:3-4 — “And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. Whoever says ‘I know Him’ but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

The Free Grace position typically argues that obedience is about fellowship or rewards — not evidence of genuine salvation. The Lordship position reads this as John’s stated test of authentic conversion.

If James 2:17 produced a nuanced or evasive answer, 1 John 2:3-4 rarely does. It’s too direct to dodge cleanly.

The Bottom Line

MacArthur, Pink, Paul Washer, and Lloyd-Jones read all six passages the same way.

Watch carefully for those who don’t, and more importantly, for teachers who never tell you how they read them at all.

The Bereans didn’t just receive the word eagerly. They examined it daily. Acts 17:11 is still the standard.

Six verses won’t replace that discipline. But they will quickly tell you where your teacher stands, and knowing that changes how you receive everything else they teach.

Ask ten people in your church to name a verse they live by. At least three will say: “God helps those who help themselves.”

Ask them where it is in the Bible. They will say Proverbs. Some will say Hezekiah. Wait, there is no book of Hezekiah.

It sounds biblical. It feels wise. It rolls off the tongue like a verse you learned in Sunday school.

But “God helps those who help themselves” is not in Scripture. Not once. Not anywhere.

It traces back to Aesop’s fable Hercules and the Wagoneer — a polytheistic Greek myth — later popularized by Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1757.

According to Barna Research, 82% of Americans believe this concept is taught in the Bible. Among born-again Christians, the number is still 68%.

Why It Matters

This is not a harmless misquote.

This phrase teaches a theology of self-reliance as a prerequisite for divine help. The logic runs: if I first get my act together, God will meet me where I am.

One theologian rightly called this “sola bootstrapsis” — the idea that God cooperates with those who reform themselves first.

That is not Christianity. That is Pelagianism dressed in American work ethic clothing.

What the Bible Actually Says

The Bible does not say God helps those who help themselves.

It says the opposite.

Romans 5:6 — “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Weak. That is the condition God chose to enter.

Not “while you were making progress.” Not “after you showed sufficient effort.”

While you were dead, hostile, and utterly unable.

Isaiah 25:4 adds: “For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress.”

God is not waiting for you to qualify. He is the refuge for those who have nothing left.

The Gospel Reversal

The entire structure of grace runs opposite to this phrase.

Salvation is not God’s rewarding effort. It is God rescuing the undeserving.

Ephesians 2:8–9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

You cannot bootstrap your way to redemption. You cannot shoulder-to-the-wheel your way to sanctification.

The grace that saves you is the same grace that sustains you. From first to last, it is His work, not yours.

The Takeaway

Stop quoting Aesop from the pulpit. Stop building your faith on the back of Benjamin Franklin.

The Gospel does not begin with your effort. It begins with your weakness, and His mercy to meet you there.

This post examines the two most significant interpretive systems within conservative evangelicalism: Dispensationalism and Covenant Theology.

The Question Underneath Everything

These two positions interpret the Bible in completely different ways that lead to radically different understandings of Israel’s future, the Church’s identity, the unfolding of prophecy, and the structure of redemptive history.

The controversy centers on whether God has one people or two, whether Old Testament promises to Israel will be fulfilled literally or spiritually, and whether the thousand-year reign of Christ is future and literal or present and spiritual.

The Dispensationalist position teaches that God has distinct programs for Israel and the Church, that Scripture should be interpreted literally (including prophecy), and that history is divided into seven dispensations with different rules for each. The Church age is a parenthesis in God’s plan for Israel, which will resume after the Rapture.

This view was developed by John Nelson Darby, systematized by C.I. Scofield and Lewis Sperry Chafer, and continues through Charles Ryrie, John Walvoord, John MacArthur (in modified form), and Andy Woods. It finds its institutional home at Dallas Theological Seminary, The Master’s Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, and Tyndale Theological Seminary.

The Covenant Theology position teaches that there is one people of God throughout all history, that the Church is spiritual Israel, and that God’s redemptive plan unfolds through three major covenants. Old Testament promises to Israel are fulfilled spiritually in Christ and the Church.

This view was developed by Reformed theologians including John Calvin and systematized by theologians like Louis Berkhof, B.B. Warfield, and Geerhardus Vos. It was championed today by R.C. Sproul, Michael Horton, Ligon Duncan, and Sinclair Ferguson through Westminster Theological Seminary, Reformed Theological Seminary, and Covenant Theological Seminary.

The Hermeneutical Foundation

The Dispensationalist Position

Dispensationalism begins with a commitment to literal, grammatical-historical interpretation applied consistently across all of Scripture.

Charles Ryrie, in Dispensationalism, articulates the three non-negotiables of the system; which he calls the sine qua non: “This is probably the most basic theological test of whether or not a person is a dispensationalist, and it is undoubtedly the most practical and conclusive. The one who fails to distinguish Israel and the church consistently will inevitably not hold to dispensational distinctions; and the one who does will.” DR. RELUCTANT

Ryrie adds the theological backbone: “The Bible itself clearly teaches that salvation, important and wonderful as it is, is not an end in itself but is rather a means to the end of glorifying God.” Paulmhenebury

Israel means Israel. A thousand years means a thousand years. Promises made to Abraham’s descendants will be fulfilled for Abraham’s descendants.

The Covenant Theology Position

Covenant Theology reads Scripture through a Christocentric lens.

The New Testament authors interpret the Old Testament typologically and spiritually. Physical shadows point to spiritual realities now fulfilled in Christ and His Church.

Louis Berkhof, in Systematic Theology, defines the architecture of this system: “The covenant of grace may be defined as that gracious agreement between the offended God and the offending but elect sinner, in which God promises salvation through faith in Christ, and the sinner accepts this believingly, promising a life of faith and obedience.” Goodreads

All the biblical covenants: Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, and New, are progressive administrations of this single Covenant of Grace.

Israel and the Church

This is the fault line.

Dispensationalism insists God has two distinct peoples with two distinct programs; Israel and the Church.

The Church is not Israel. It did not exist in the Old Testament. It began at Pentecost and represents a mystery unrevealed in prior revelation. After the Rapture, God will resume His program with national Israel during the Tribulation and Millennium.

Key verses:

Romans 11:25-26 — “Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved.”

Ephesians 3:3-6 — “How the mystery was made known to me by revelation... This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.”

Covenant Theology insists there is one people of God throughout all redemptive history.

The Church is not a parenthesis. It is the continuation and fulfillment of Israel. Abraham’s true offspring is Christ, and those who are in Christ by faith.

Key verses:

Galatians 3:7, 29 — “Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham... And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”

1 Peter 2:9 — “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession.”

These verses apply to the Church; language drawn directly from Old Testament descriptions of Israel.

Eschatology: Where It Gets Concrete

Dispensationalism expects a pre-tribulation Rapture, a literal seven-year Tribulation during which God deals with national Israel, and a literal one-thousand-year earthly kingdom with Christ reigning from Jerusalem.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 — “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”

Covenant Theology holds that the Millennium is the present Church age; Christ reigns now spiritually from heaven. Both amillennialists and postmillennialists agree on this point, and together they represent the dominant Covenant position against Dispensationalism.

Where they part ways is on the trajectory of this age; amillennialists expect wheat and tares to coexist until the end, while postmillennialists expect the gospel to triumph progressively until the world is largely Christianized before Christ returns. Both, however, agree there is one future return of Christ, followed immediately by general resurrection, final judgment, and the eternal state.

Acts 2:33-36 — "Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."' Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."

Peter declares in Acts 2 that Christ’s resurrection and present heavenly session fulfill the Davidic throne promise now; not in a future earthly kingdom.

Christ is already seated. He is already reigning. The Millennium, for the amillennialist, is not coming; it is happening.

The dispensationalist disagrees, arguing Peter is describing Christ’s exaltation, not His Davidic reign, which still awaits literal fulfillment in Jerusalem.

One verse. Two systems. This is the entire debate in miniature.

Practical Implications for Christian Living

This is where theology meets Monday morning.

How You Read the Old Testament

Dispensationalists read Old Testament promises as awaiting literal future fulfillment for national Israel. The land promises are not yet complete. The Davidic throne will be literally occupied by Christ in Jerusalem.

Covenant theologians read the Old Testament through Christ. Every promise finds its yes and amen in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20). The physical land promised to Abraham was never the ultimate goal; it was a shadow pointing forward to the eternal inheritance believers receive in Christ. The Davidic throne is occupied now; Christ rules at the Father’s right hand.

How You Relate to the Mosaic Law

Dispensationalists maintain a sharp distinction between law and grace. The Church is not under the Mosaic economy. Old Testament commands require New Testament authorization before applying to believers today.

Covenant theologians see the moral law as abiding. The Ten Commandments reflect God’s unchanging character. Ceremonial and civil laws are fulfilled and set aside in Christ; the moral law remains as the rule of grateful obedience.

How You Pray for and Think About Israel

Dispensationalists see modern Israel’s national existence as prophetically significant. God’s program for the Jewish people is not finished. Christians have theological reasons to pray specifically for Israel’s salvation and restoration.

Covenant theologians view modern Israel as a geopolitical nation like any other. God’s promises to Israel are fulfilled spiritually in the Church. Prayers for Jewish people are urgent; not because of national land promises, but because they need Christ just as every other people does.

How You Think About the Future

Dispensationalists expect increasing apostasy before the Rapture. The world will not be Christianized. Cultural pessimism about this age is theologically consistent. Believers look for an imminent departure - the rapture.

Amillennialists expect mixed conditions until the end; wheat and tares grow together (Matthew 13:30). Neither complete victory nor complete collapse. Faithful endurance, not escapism, marks the posture of the Church.

How You Interpret Current Events

Dispensationalists read headlines through a prophetic grid. Middle East tensions, temple mount developments, and Jewish immigration to Israel are potentially prophetically significant.

Covenant theologians are more cautious about reading specific geopolitical events as fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

The Bottom Line

The fundamental question is simple.

Does God have one unified plan centered entirely on Christ; or two distinct programs for Israel and the Church?

Your answer to that question shapes everything else.

Both positions are held by serious, Scripture-saturated, orthodox men and women.

But they cannot both be right. And the difference is not merely theological trivia.

It determines how you open your Bible tomorrow morning.

In this post, I’ll show you exactly what that looks like in the real world, and why it matters more than most Christians realize.

The Fundamental Question

At its core, the debate between Calvinism and Arminianism reduces to a single question.

Who initiates salvation?

The Arminian answers; man does. God extends the offer, provides the means, and makes salvation possible; but the decisive act is the human will freely choosing to respond. God votes for you, Satan votes against you, but you cast the deciding ballot.

The Calvinist answers; God does. Salvation originates in the eternal counsel of God, is purchased by Christ with particular and effective intent, and is applied by the Holy Spirit who regenerates the sinner before faith; producing the very faith He then requires.

This is not a minor adjustment in emphasis. It is a fundamental difference in the architecture of salvation itself.

A Pastoral Confession That Should Stop Everyone Cold

Several years ago, a pastor shared a story that has stayed with me.

He had been on his way to visit a man in the hospital; a man he believed was unsaved. On the way, he got a flat tire. By the time he arrived, the man had died.

His conclusion: “That man went to hell because of my flat tire.”

That statement is not just prideful. It’s bad theology.

Salvation derailed by a flat tire is a theological embarrassment, especially considering a thief hanging on a cross next to a dying Savior got saved just fine.

It is the logical and inevitable conclusion of a framework that places the decisive factor in salvation on human instrumentality. If man’s will is the hinge, and the evangelist is the mechanism through which man’s will is engaged, then a flat tire is not merely an inconvenience; it may just be an eternal sentence of damnation.

That is a burden the Bible never places on any human being, and a god who operates that way is not the God of Scripture.

Even Arminians Who Are Saved Are Chosen

Here is what the Arminian framework often obscures from its own adherents.

If you are genuinely saved; if the Spirit has regenerated you, if you have truly repented and believed; then you also were chosen.

Ephesians 1:4 does not offer an escape clause; “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world.” That verse does not say God chose those He foreknew would choose Him. It says He chose us. Before the foundation of the world. The initiative is entirely and unambiguously divine.

The Arminian who is genuinely converted is not converted because he made the right decision. He is converted because God, in His sovereign mercy, worked in him both the willingness and the ability to respond. Philippians 2:13 — “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

In other words; the Arminian’s salvation, if genuine, is Calvinist in its mechanics even when it is believed Arminian in its theology.

This is why John MacArthur has argued that genuine Arminian converts are saved in spite of their theological framework rather than because of it; the grace they experience is more sovereign than the grace they describe.

The Practical Consequences Are Significant

Both systems can produce genuine converts. The distinction is not primarily about who gets saved; it is about the framework that surrounds the preaching, the counseling, and the assurance of salvation.

Evangelism looks different under each system.

The Arminian evangelist frequently relies on emotional pressure (low lights and soft music), repeated altar calls, and persuasion techniques designed to move the human will toward a decision. The goal is to get someone across the line.

R.C. Sproul consistently warned that much of modern evangelism had drifted toward manipulating an emotional environment designed to produce decisions rather than genuine regeneration, noting in Tabletalk that altar calls and sinner's prayers measure outward professions, not inward transformation. The result is a trail of false professions; people who walked an aisle, prayed a prayer, but were never actually regenerated.

The Calvinist evangelist preaches the gospel with equal urgency, but the urgency is grounded in the command to repent, not in the anxiety that God’s plan might be derailed by an inadequate presentation. Paul Washer has consistently stated that the evangelist’s responsibility is to preach the whole counsel of God accurately; God’s responsibility is to save. That distinction produces a preacher who is faithful rather than frantic.

Assurance of salvation is equally affected.

The Arminian believer can never possess settled certainty. If the will that chose God can un-choose Him; if salvation can be forfeited through subsequent sin or unbelief; then assurance becomes a daily calculation based on sustained human performance.

Lloyd-Jones, in his extended sermon series on 1 John, pressed deeply into this point; noting that John wrote his entire letter, as stated in 1 John 5:13, specifically so that believers “may know” they have eternal life. (Note: The Gospel of John 20:31 also makes the same “may know” claim.)

The Calvinist grounds assurance in the unchanging purpose of God. Romans 8:38-39 does not say “I am persuaded that nothing will separate us from the love of God as long as we maintain our faith.” It says nothing will separate us. Period.

Pastoral counseling follows the same divide.

The Arminian counselor must always hold open the possibility that a struggling believer has forfeited his salvation. The Calvinist counsels from the foundation of God’s preserving grip; distinguishing between the genuine believer in a season of discipline and the false professor whose life never produced fruit; a distinction that requires discernment rather than doubt.

A.W. Pink argued throughout The Sovereignty of God that divine sovereignty is not a cold theological abstraction; it is the very foundation of the believer's peace in the darkest seasons of life. A God who might fail to complete what He began is not a God worthy of trust in the darkest nights of the soul.

The God Each Framework Produces

This is where the practical stakes become most visible.

The Arminian framework, taken to its logical conclusion, produces a God who desperately wants to save everyone, has done everything He can to make salvation possible, and now waits anxiously to see whether humanity will cooperate with His intentions. His sovereignty is limited by the veto power of the human will. His purposes can even be frustrated by a flat tire.

The Calvinist framework produces a God who “works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11); whose purposes cannot be thwarted, whose elect cannot be lost, and whose sovereignty is not a theological formality but a present and active reality over every circumstance, including flat tires.

John MacArthur has argued consistently that the doctrines of grace are not merely academically correct; they are pastorally essential to the health and stability of any congregation.

A congregation that does not understand God’s sovereignty will be perpetually anxious, easily manipulated, and unable to rest in the finished work of Christ.

A congregation that does understand God’s sovereignty will be marked by deep assurance, genuine humility, and an unshakeable confidence that the God who began a good work will most certainly finish it.

That framework shapes everything: how the gospel is presented, how prophecy is interpreted, and what genuine conversion looks like.

Most teachers don’t tell you where they stand.

That makes it your responsibility to find out.

The Berean Standard

The Internet has democratized spiritual content.

Anyone with a laptop and a free Substack account can publish biblical commentary, offer devotional wisdom, or position themselves as a theological guru.

The problem is not limited to the Internet.

Many churches are equally opaque; doctrinal statements are buried in website footnotes, and theological frameworks are never disclosed from the pulpit. Congregants may sit under teaching for years without ever knowing where their pastor stands on various theological issues.

The Bereans in Acts 17:11 modeled the right response.

Acts 17:11 — “Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”

Notice the combination: eagerness to receive and diligence to verify.

They did not simply accept what Paul taught because he was an apostle. They held his teaching against the standard of Scripture.

That did not insult Paul; it honored God, and that standard applies no less today.

A Note Before We Begin

Please understand that the theological divisions that I discuss below rarely fall into perfectly neat categories, and that genuine believers are on both sides of these debates.

The divisions do not necessarily define the boundaries of salvation; they define the boundaries of how one approaches Scripture, interprets prophecy, presents the gospel, and understands the nature of true conversion.

The Three Primary Divisions

My purpose here is not to argue every position exhaustively or to convince you to adopt one over another.

My intent is simple: identify the three most significant theological divisions within conservative evangelicalism, explain what each position teaches, and disclose where I stand, so you can evaluate what I write and hold other teachers to the same standard.

Calvinism vs. Arminianism

Calvinism vs. Arminianism asks the most foundational question in all of salvation theology: Is God sovereign over salvation, or does man's free will cast the deciding vote?

The Arminian Position

Arminians argue that God’s election is conditional, based on His foreknowledge of who will freely choose Him.

They point to 1 Timothy 2:4, where Paul writes that God “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth,” arguing this proves God’s saving intention extends universally to every individual.

They also cite John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” — as evidence that salvation is available to all who choose to respond.

Arminians also often reject the doctrine of eternal security entirely, citing Hebrews 6:4-6 as their primary proof text, and arguing that those "who have once been enlightened... and then have fallen away" prove that genuinely saved believers can forfeit their salvation through subsequent unbelief.

The Calvinist Response

The Calvinist reads those same texts differently, and adds texts Arminianism cannot adequately answer.

1 Timothy 2:4 — “who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Paul’s context in verses 1-2 is prayer for “all people... kings and all who are in high positions.” He is describing all kinds of people; not every individual without exception. God’s desire here is not a universal saving intention for every soul; it is a sovereign purpose that spans every category of humanity.

John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” This verse establishes the scope of God’s love and the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice; it does not address the mechanism of election.

The question is not whether God loves the world. The question is how He sovereignly acts within it to bring His elect to faith. “Whoever believes” describes the beneficiaries of salvation; it does not explain who grants the belief.

The texts that anchor the Calvinist position are even harder to dismiss.

John 6:37, 44 — “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me” and “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.” The word draws in verse 44 is the same Greek word used in Acts 16:19 of forcible compulsion; not mere invitation.

Ephesians 1:4-5 states that God “chose us in Him before the foundation of the world” and “predestined us for adoption.” This choice precedes human response entirely.

On perseverance, John 10:28-29 provides the decisive answer; “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” The guarantee is Christ’s; not the believer’s sustained effort.

Romans 8:29-30 presents the golden chain of redemption and supports both God’s sovereign choice and His absolute guarantee; “those whom He foreknew He also predestined... those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified.”

Arminianism ultimately places the decisive factor in salvation on man.

Calvinism places it entirely on God.

Where you land on Calvinism vs. Arminianism determines how you read Scripture, the gospel you preach, the assurance you offer, and the Christ you present.

Dispensationalism vs. Covenant Theology

Dispensationalism vs. Covenant Theology asks whether God has one unified people —the Jews— throughout redemptive history, or whether He operates through distinct programs for Israel and the Church.

The Covenant Theology Position

Covenant theologians argue that the Church is the spiritual Israel, the fulfillment and continuation of the Old Testament people of God.

They appeal to Galatians 3:29, “if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” as evidence that New Covenant believers inherit Israel’s promises spiritually.

Romans 2:28-29 supports this reading, “For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly... but a Jew is one inwardly.” They also cite Romans 9:6, “For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,” arguing that true Israel has always been a spiritual category, not an ethnic one.

This leads them to interpret Old Testament prophecy and Revelation as largely fulfilled or spiritually realized in the Church.

The Dispensationalist Response

The Dispensationalist insists that the hermeneutical principle of literal, grammatical, historical interpretation must be applied consistently, including prophecy.

Romans 11:1 opens with Paul’s direct question: “Has God rejected His people? By no means!” The entire chapter is an argument for the future restoration of ethnic Israel, culminating in verse 26; “And in this way all Israel will be saved.” Paul is not describing the Church. He is describing a future work of God among the Jewish people.

Romans 11:28-29 reinforces this; “As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” God’s covenant commitments to national Israel have not been transferred or spiritualized away.

Zechariah 12:10 and 14:4 describe a future where God pours out a spirit of grace on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and where Christ’s feet stand on the Mount of Olives at His return. These are geographic, ethnic, and literal descriptions that resist allegorization.

The Galatians 3:29 argument, while establishing Gentile participation in Abrahamic blessing, does not eliminate the distinction between Israel and the Church; it expands the covenant family. Participation is not replacement.

Where you land here reshapes your entire reading of the Old Testament prophets, Daniel, and Revelation; determines whether God's covenants with Israel remain literally intact; and ultimately defines whether you preach a God who keeps His promises or one who quietly reassigned them.

Lordship Salvation vs. Free Grace

Lordship Salvation vs. Free Grace asks whether genuine saving faith necessarily produces repentance, submission to Christ’s authority, and fruit; or whether a person can be saved while living carnally and without transformation.

The Free Grace Position

Free Grace theologians argue that adding repentance or submission to faith introduces works into justification.

They appeal to John 3:16 and Acts 16:31 — “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” — as proof that faith alone, understood as bare intellectual assent, is the sole condition of salvation.

They also cite 1 Corinthians 3:15 to argue that a believer can suffer the loss of rewards while still being “saved, but only as through fire,” suggesting a carnal Christian who bears no fruit is nonetheless genuinely saved.

The Lordship Salvation Response

The Lordship position does not add works to justification. It insists that genuine faith, by its nature, produces transformation as a natural byproduct.

James 2:17 is unambiguous: “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” A dead faith does not justify. The question is not whether works earn salvation; it is whether a faith that produces nothing was ever alive.

Matthew 7:21-23 presents the most sobering indictment of profession without transformation: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.” Christ does not say these people lost their salvation. He says He “never knew” them. Their profession was never genuine.

2 Corinthians 5:17 establishes the necessary result of true regeneration; “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This is not aspirational language. It is declarative.

Finally, Luke 9:23 records Christ’s own terms of discipleship; “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” The call to salvation and the call to follow are inseparable in the mouth of Jesus Himself.

Free Grace theology, however well-intentioned in protecting grace, ultimately produces a category of “saved” individuals that the New Testament nowhere recognizes: those who believe with their minds while their lives remain entirely unchanged.

Where you land here determines the gospel you call people to, the converts you accept, and whether the Christ you preach demands everything or costs nothing.

Where I Stand

For purposes of full transparency, here is where I stand:

I am Calvinist in my soteriology; I believe God’s sovereign election and effectual grace are the ground of salvation, and that those truly regenerated will persevere.

I am Dispensational in my hermeneutics; I believe the promises made to national Israel remain distinct from the Church’s calling and will be literally fulfilled.

I hold to Lordship Salvation; I believe genuine faith produces repentance, submission, and fruit, and that a profession absent transformation warrants serious examination.

Every post on The Inevitable Truth is written from within that framework.

You may not share every position. That is not the point.

The point is that you now know the lens through which I read and teach Scripture; and that knowledge allows you to engage what I write with the same Berean diligence the text calls you to apply to every teacher, including me.

Most Christians know they are saved, but few can explain how.

That is not a minor gap. It is the difference between a faith that holds under theological pressure and one that collapses the moment someone asks a hard question.

The Ordo Salutis; a Latin term meaning “Order of Salvation,” is the Reformed answer to the question every believer should be able to answer: what exactly did God do, and in what order, to bring a dead sinner to life?

As Ligonier Ministries summarizes: “God calls us, produces regeneration in us, so that we respond with repentance, faith, and obedience.”

Romans 8:29-30 is the foundational text:

Romans 8:29-30 – “For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified.”

This is what Reformed theologians call the Golden Chain of Salvation; an unbreakable sequence in which no one falls out.

Summary: What is the Sequence of Salvation?

The Ordo Salutis (Order of Salvation) explains exactly what God did, and in what order, to save His elect.

Election - God chose specific individuals before creation

Universal Call - Gospel proclaimed to all

Effectual Call - Spirit’s irresistible work in the elect

Regeneration - God gives spiritual life before faith

Conversion - Faith and repentance as response to regeneration

Justification - God declares the sinner righteous instantly

Adoption - Entrance into God’s family as heirs

Sanctification - Progressive transformation into Christlikeness

Perseverance - God preserves true believers to the end

Glorification - Final resurrection and eradication of sin

Timing: Election in eternity past. External call whenever gospel is preached. Upon the Effectual call, regeneration, conversion, justification, and adoption are instantaneous in salvation. Sanctification and perseverance span the Christian life. Glorification is at resurrection.

The Unbreakable Chain: Romans 8:29-30 guarantees no one falls out. All foreknown are predestined, called, justified, and glorified. The God who chose you before time will certainly glorify you.

The 10 Pillars of the Order of Salvation

1: Election

God’s Eternal Choice Before Creation

Before time began, God chose specific individuals for salvation.

This was not based on foreseen faith or merit; it was based solely on God’s sovereign good pleasure.

Election is the fountain from which every other saving benefit flows.

Key Verses:

• Ephesians 1:4-5 – “Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will.”

• 2 Thessalonians 2:13 – “God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.”

2: The Universal Call

The Gospel Proclaimed to All

God commands the gospel to be preached to all people everywhere.

This outward call goes to the elect and non-elect alike.

It is the means God uses to bring His elect to salvation.

Key Verse:

• Romans 10:14 – “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?”

• Matthew 28:19 – “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”

3: Effectual Call

The Spirit’s Sovereign Work in the Elect

The universal call goes to all; the effectual call goes only to the elect.

The Holy Spirit works sovereignly in the heart of the elect, making this gospel call irresistible.

God opens the heart; the person willingly responds.

This is not coercion; it is transformation. God changes what the sinner wants.

Key Verses:

• Acts 16:14 – “The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.”

• John 6:44 – “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.”

• Romans 8:30 – “And those whom He predestined He also called.”

4: Regeneration

The New Birth Precedes Faith

God imparts spiritual life to the dead sinner in order that they might believe.

You do not believe in order to be born again; you are born again in order to believe.

A dead man cannot respond until he is first made alive.

John MacArthur consistently teaches that regeneration is the sovereign work of the Spirit that enables and produces saving faith.

Key Verses:

• John 3:3 – “Jesus answered him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”

• Ephesians 2:1, 5 – “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins... even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.”

• Ezekiel 36:26 – “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.”

• 1 John 5:1 – “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God.”

5: Conversion (Faith and Repentance)

The Sinner’s Response Enabled by Grace

Regeneration produces conversion.

Conversion has two inseparable elements: faith and repentance.

They cannot be separated; genuine faith always includes repentance and genuine repentance always produces faith.

Faith is not merely intellectual assent but fiducia; personal trust and commitment to Christ as both Savior and Lord.

Repentance is a radical change of mind about sin, self, and the Savior; turning from sin and turning to Christ.

This is where the Lordship Salvation position flows directly from the Reformed Ordo Salutis. If God regenerates and produces genuine faith, that faith will include submission to Christ’s Lordship.

Key Verses:

• Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

• Mark 1:15 – “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

• Acts 20:21 – “Testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.”

• Acts 3:19 – “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.”

• John 6:37 – “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”

6: Justification

God’s Legal Declaration of Righteousness

Justification is a forensic (legal) act of God.

God declares the sinner righteous on the basis of Christ’s imputed righteousness.

It is not infused righteousness (Rome’s view) but imputed righteousness; Christ’s perfect obedience credited to the believer’s account.

It is instantaneous and complete; not a process but a declaration.

R.C. Sproul emphasized that justification is the article upon which the church stands or falls.

Key Verses:

• Romans 5:1 – “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

• Romans 4:5 – “And to the one who does not work but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.”

• 2 Corinthians 5:21 – “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

• Romans 3:24 – “And are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

7: Adoption

Entrance Into God’s Family

Justification removes guilt; adoption confers privilege.

God not only declares the sinner not guilty; He receives him as a beloved child and heir.

Adoption flows immediately from justification; all who are justified are simultaneously adopted.

Key Verses:

• Romans 8:15-17 – “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.”

• John 1:12 – “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”

• Galatians 4:4-5 – “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”

8: Sanctification

Progressive Transformation Into Christlikeness

Sanctification is the lifelong process of becoming what we already are in Christ.

It has two aspects:

Definitive Sanctification: The believer is set apart to God at conversion; positionally holy in Christ.

Progressive Sanctification: The believer grows in practical holiness through the Spirit’s ongoing work; increasingly conformed to Christ’s image.

This is where Reformed theology connects directly to Lordship Salvation. True believers will show progressive fruit. The absence of any fruit over a lifetime raises serious questions about the genuineness of conversion.

MacArthur and Sproul both taught that while no believer is perfect, every genuine believer is progressing.

Key Verses:

• Philippians 2:12-13 – “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

• 2 Corinthians 3:18 – “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”

• 1 Thessalonians 4:3 – “For this is the will of God, your sanctification.”

• Hebrews 12:14 – “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

9: Perseverance

Preservation by God Through Faith

All who are truly regenerated will persevere to the end.

This is not merely eternal security (you won’t lose your salvation); it is perseverance (you will continue in faith).

God preserves His elect through means; Word, prayer, fellowship, and the ongoing work of the Spirit.

Those who permanently fall away prove they were never genuinely regenerated.

Key Verses:

• John 10:28-29 – “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

• Philippians 1:6 – “And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

• 1 John 2:19 – “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.”

• Jude 24 – “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy.”

10: Glorification

The Final and Complete Salvation

Glorification is the consummation of salvation.

At Christ’s return, the bodies of the elect will be resurrected and transformed; sin will be completely and finally eradicated.

The believer will be fully and permanently conformed to the image of Christ.

This is the only step that is entirely future; it has not yet been experienced.

Key Verses:

• Romans 8:30 – “And those whom He justified He also glorified.”

• Philippians 3:20-21 – “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body.”

• 1 John 3:2 – “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.”

• Romans 8:18 – “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

The Timing of Ordo Salutis

The order of salvation unfolds across eternity and time with divine precision.

Election occurred before the foundation of the world.

Ephesians 1:4 declares, “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him.”

God sovereignly chose His elect in eternity past, not based on foreseen faith or works, but according to His own purpose and grace.

The external call happens whenever and wherever the Gospel is proclaimed. This general call goes out to all who hear, whether elect or not. Most reject it.

The effectual call occurs on God’s sovereign timetable in the life of the elect. This irresistible internal call cannot be thwarted.

2 Timothy 1:9 affirms God “saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of His own purpose and grace, which He gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”

Regeneration is instantaneous, occurring at the moment of effectual calling. God births the spiritually dead soul to life.

John 3:8 says, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Conversion—comprising both faith and repentance—immediately follows regeneration. The regenerated heart responds in faith and repentance. You cannot believe until you are born again.

Ephesians 2:8-9 – "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Acts 11:18 – "When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, 'Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.'"

Justification occurs simultaneously with faith. The moment you believe, God declares you righteous.

Romans 5:1 proclaims, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Adoption happens concurrently with justification.

Galatians 3:26 states, “For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.”

Sanctification begins immediately at conversion and continues progressively throughout the Christian life.

Philippians 1:6 promises, “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Perseverance spans the entire Christian life. True believers endure to the end because God preserves them.

1 Peter 1:5 assures us we “are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Glorification awaits either death or Christ’s return.

Romans 8:30 declares, “Those whom He justified He also glorified.” The verb tense indicates certainty—it’s so sure that Scripture speaks of future glorification in past tense.

This sequence reveals salvation as entirely God’s work from eternity past through eternity future.

We contribute nothing. He accomplishes everything.

The Unbreakable Chain

The Golden Chain of Romans 8:29-30 is the foundation of Reformed assurance.

Everyone in the chain stays in the chain.

All the foreknown are predestined. All the predestined are called. All the called are justified. All the justified are glorified.

Not one is lost between election and glorification.

This is the pastoral power of the Ordo Salutis.

It is not an academic exercise.

It is the assurance that the God who chose you before time, called you in time, regenerated you, justified you, and is sanctifying you; will most certainly glorify you.

As Philippians 1:6 declares: “And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Share The Inevitable Truth

When hardship hits, your flesh screams two words: fight or flight.

Push back, or run away, but resist the discomfort at all costs.

But God’s Word says something that offends every natural impulse you have.

James 1:2-4 — “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

Joy? In trials?

That’s not a suggestion. It’s a command.

And it reveals something critical about how God grows His children.

Your Response Reveals Your Theology

The natural man meets suffering with resistance.

The mature believer meets it with submission.

R.C. Sproul put it plainly: “God just doesn’t throw a life preserver to a drowning person. He goes to the bottom of the sea, and pulls a corpse from the bottom of the sea, takes him up on the bank, breathes into him the breath of life and makes him alive” (R.C. Sproul).

That same sovereign God who saved you is now sanctifying you.

And His preferred tool? Affliction.

In his sermon series on James, John MacArthur declares: “God doesn’t have to test any of us to find out what’s in our heart. God tests us so we can find out” (Grace to You, The Purpose of Trials).

And then he drives it deeper: “So many people who might be confident of their faith on the surface find that when it goes under the water of sorrow and affliction it loses all its brilliance, showing itself to be, in fact, an imitation. While on the other hand, the true child of God shines as a genuine diamond in the water of adversity” (Grace to You, How to Endure Trials).

The fight-or-flight response treats trials as accidents.

Scripture treats them as appointments.

When the Church Becomes Job’s Friends

As if the trial itself isn’t enough, there’s a second wound that cuts even deeper.

It comes from inside the church.

When suffering enters a believer’s life, well-meaning Christians often reach for the same broken theology Job’s friends used: you must have done something wrong.

Job 42:7 — “After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: ‘My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.’”

God Himself rebuked the theology that equates suffering with personal failure.

Yet that same theology thrives in churches today.

The prosperity gospel has trained an entire generation to believe that hardship is evidence of weak faith; that if you were really walking with God, this wouldn’t be happening to you.

Justin Peters, who lives with cerebral palsy and has spent decades exposing this lie, recounted the story of a woman who came to him in tears after one of his seminars. She told him about her 8-year-old son with muscular dystrophy: “I’ve been told by so many that if I had enough faith my son would be healed. I’ve been told that if I loved him enough he would be healed. All of these years, I have blamed myself for my son’s illness” (Baptist Press).

That’s what bad theology does.

It takes a person already crushed under the weight of suffering and adds guilt on top of it.

John MacArthur identifies this pattern directly in the prosperity movement. As he writes in Strange Fire, these practices “distort the biblical message and leave congregants feeling guilty for their perceived inadequacies” (Strange Fire, 2013).

Ligonier Ministries, the teaching ministry founded by R.C. Sproul, states it with theological precision: “Physical, material, and financial prosperity are no sure marks of God’s favor, and suffering is no sure mark of His displeasure” (Ligonier, A Field Guide on False Teaching).

Here’s the truth your condemning friends need to hear.

Trials are not evidence of God’s disappointment. They are evidence of His engagement.

Peters himself came to this conclusion after years of living with the very condition false teachers said God should have healed: “Next to my salvation, my cerebral palsy is one of the greatest gifts God has ever given me. I have come to know and experience Him in ways I could never have done otherwise. God has used it to keep me dependent upon Him” (Baptist Press).

If you are in a trial right now, and someone in your church is suggesting your suffering is your fault, hand them the book of Job.

God had strong words for people who preach that theology.

What Happens When Children Disobey

Here’s where it gets uncomfortable.

God doesn’t ignore rebellion in His own family.

If you belong to Him, you will be corrected.

Paul Washer drives this home with characteristic directness: “If you are a genuinely born again Christian, a child of God, you will walk in the way of righteousness as a style of life, and if you step off that path of righteousness the Father will come for you. He will discipline you. He will put you back on that path” (Shocking Youth Message).

And then the terrifying corollary: “If you step off that path and there’s no discipline and you continue on that path, you can have no assurance whatsoever of your salvation. And it is not that you lost your salvation; it’s that you’re showing now that you never had it” (Paul Washer).

That’s the distinction most professing Christians miss entirely.

Discipline isn’t punishment; it’s also proof of sonship.

A.W. Pink, writing in his Exposition of Hebrews, also makes this distinction: “When the believer is smarting under the rod, let him not say, God is now punishing me for my sins. That can never be; that is most dishonoring to the blood of Christ. God is correcting thee in love, not smiting in wrath” (An Exposition of Hebrews).

And then he adds: “Chastisement evidences our Divine sonship; the father of a family does not concern himself with those on the outside” (An Exposition of Hebrews).

The child who is never corrected has reason to question whether he belongs to the Father at all.

Stop Fighting and Running. Start Submitting.

Every trial you face is doing one of two things:

• Refining genuine faith into something unshakable

• Exposing a profession that was never real

Your flesh will always default to escape.

Your church may default to blame.

Faith defaults to trust.

The question isn’t whether God will bring trials.

The question is whether you’ll count them as joy or treat them as enemies.

James 1:12 — “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him.”

Stop fighting God’s process.

Stop listening to those who tell you suffering means failure.

He’s not breaking you.

He’s building you.

• Humanity is spiritually dead in sin, not wounded or on life support; dead people cannot make choices. Ephesians 2:1 – “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.”

• God makes believers spiritually alive FIRST, then draws them to faith. Ephesians 2:4-5 – “But God…made us alive together with Christ.” John 6:44 – “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

• Regeneration precedes faith; God must give spiritual life before a person can exercise saving faith. John 1:13 – “Who were born…not of the will of man, but of God.”

• Believers participated in their spiritual birth as much as they did their physical birth; they were utterly passive. John 3:3 – “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

• Faith is a gift from God that receives salvation, not a work that earns it. Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith…not a result of works.”

• If salvation depends on human will rather than God’s sovereignty, God is not truly sovereign over salvation. Romans 9:16 – “So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”

• God doesn’t merely foresee who will believe; He determines who will believe according to His purpose before time began. 2 Timothy 1:9 – “Who saved us…because of His own purpose and grace, which He gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”

• God chose believers based on His sovereign pleasure, not because they are special, smarter, or more spiritual. Romans 9:15 – “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

• Non-believers freely and completely deny Christ; they LOVED darkness and REFUSED to come to the light. John 3:19-20 – “The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light.” John 5:40 – “Yet you refuse to come to Me that you may have life.”

• God doesn’t force anyone to reject Him; He leaves them in their freely chosen rebellion without excuse. Romans 1:18-20 – “They are without excuse…who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”

• Even after experiencing God’s judgment in Revelation, non-believers persist in cursing God and refusing to repent. Revelation 16:9 – “They did not repent and give Him glory.”

• We cannot fully understand divine sovereignty, but we don’t need to understand it to appreciate grace. Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts…My ways higher than your ways.”

• Salvation is secure because God holds believers, not because they are holding on. Ephesians 2:4-5 – “God…made us alive together with Christ.”

• God is still working to give the gift of salvation to even more people.

To His Glory,

Not because Scripture is unclear, but it destroys our self-reliance on salvation. Additionally, most churches won't even touch it, and many who do get it wrong.

Let me walk you through it gently.

Your name is permanently written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Revelation 21:27 – "But nothing unclean will ever enter it [New Jerusalem, the holy city], nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those [believers] who are written in the Lamb's book of life."

Revelation 3:5 – “The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”

That your name will never be blotted out is your guaranteed assurance of salvation.

You Were Dead in Your Sin

Here’s why this is important.

Ephesians 2:1 – “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.”

Romans 5:12 – "Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man [Adam], and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned."

Not wounded. Not on life support. Spiritually dead.

Dead people can’t make choices.

Paul Washer explains in his sermon series on regeneration: “The natural man is not able to choose God because he is spiritually dead. His will is in bondage to sin” (The Gospel’s Power and Message).

We can’t choose on our own, so God chose us first.

A corpse cannot make decisions. You must be alive before you can choose anything.

God Makes You Spiritually Alive

This is the key point many miss.

Ephesians 2:4-5 – “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.”

God made you alive FIRST.

Then He draws you, enabling you to believe.

John 6:44 – “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

John 6:65 – “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

John MacArthur writes in his systematic approach to salvation: “Regeneration precedes faith. God must first give spiritual life before a person can exercise saving faith” (The Gospel According to Jesus).

You Participated in Your Spiritual Birth as Much as You Did Your Physical Birth

Here's where people struggle; they still want to be responsible for their own salvation.

John 3:3 – “Jesus answered him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.’”

Jesus uses the analogy of being “born again” for a reason.

Think about your physical birth.

Did you choose to be born? Contribute to your conception? Will yourself into existence?

No. You were utterly passive.

Your parents decided. You were the result of their union.

The analogy fits with salvation. God decides. You’re born again by His will, not yours.

John 1:13 – “Who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Paul Washer states in his teaching on the new birth: “A man contributes nothing to his regeneration any more than a baby contributes to his physical birth” (Ten Indictments).

God decides. You were born again by God’s sovereign will, not your own.

The Free Will Confusion

Now many will say: “But I did made a decision out of my own free will!”

Yes, you did.

But only AFTER God gave you the faith to make it.

Even that faith was a gift.

You didn’t manufacture it.

You received it freely and responded willingly.

But the ability to respond came from Him; before that you could do nothing.

A.W. Pink explains in his exposition of divine sovereignty: “Faith is not a work that earns salvation; it is a gift that receives salvation” (A.W. Pink, The Sovereignty of God).

If You Save Yourself, God Isn’t Sovereign

Here’s the problem with autonomous free will: if you ultimately decide your salvation, then YOU are responsible for it, not God.

But Scripture is clear.

Romans 9:16 – “So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”

If salvation depends on your will, God is not sovereign over salvation.

That contradicts everything Scripture teaches.

God Doesn’t Just Ratify Your Choice

Many try to soften election by saying: “God just looks into the future and ratifies the choice of those who will eventually choose Him.”

God is omniscient and He certainly can see into the future. But that would make God a passive observer, not an active Savior. It would also make you your own savior.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones writes in his Romans commentary: “The biblical doctrine is not that God foresaw who would believe, but that He determined who would believe” (Romans: An Exposition of Chapter 9).

2 Timothy 1:9 – “Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of His own purpose and grace, which He gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”

Before time began, He purposed to save you.

Not based on foreseen faith.

Based on His sovereign pleasure.

Why Did He Choose You?

Not because you’re special.

Not because you’re smarter, more spiritual, or better than others.

Romans 9:15 – “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

James White states in his defense of Reformed soteriology: “Election is not based on anything in the creature, but solely on the good pleasure of the Creator” (The Potter’s Freedom).

He chose you because He wanted to.

What About Those He Didn’t Choose?

Then, is God responsible for those who aren’t saved?

No!

Interestingly, this is where free will actually DOES come into play.

Every non-believer freely and completely denies Christ.

John 3:19-20 – “And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.”

John 5:40 – “Yet you refuse to come to Me that you may have life.”

They LOVED darkness.

They REFUSED to come.

God doesn’t force anyone to reject Him.

He simply leaves them in their freely chosen rebellion.

Romans 1:18-20 – “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

They SUPPRESS the truth.

They EXCHANGE the glory of God for idols.

They are WITHOUT EXCUSE.

Even in the book of Revelation, after personally experiencing God’s judgment, non-believers persist in their rejection.

Revelation 9:20-21 – “The rest of mankind, who were not killed-by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

Revelation 16:9 – “They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give Him glory.”

Revelation 16:11 – “And cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds.”

After all the horrific judgments, they still CURSED God.

They DID NOT REPENT.

Their rejection is willful, deliberate, and without coercion.

John MacArthur explains in his teaching on divine sovereignty: “God’s sovereignty in election does not violate human responsibility in rejection. The unbeliever sins freely and willfully; his damnation is entirely his own doing” (The Gospel According to the Apostles).

God doesn’t need to harden a heart that’s already stone cold.

He simply leaves it in its chosen condition.

The lost perish because they love their sin more than they love God.

I Don’t Fully Understand It

Do I understand why God chose me and not someone else?

No.

Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

God’s ways are infinitely higher than mine.

But I don’t need to understand divine sovereignty to appreciate grace.

What I Know

I know I was spiritually dead.

I know I couldn’t choose God of my own free will.

I know He chose me before the foundation of the world according to the kind intention of His will and without any merit on my part.

I know my name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life and will never be blotted out.

I know He made me alive, gave me faith, and drew me to believe in Christ.

I know I responded willingly and freely after He gave me new life.

I know I participated in my spiritual birth as much as I participated in my physical birth; it was entirely His work.

I know those who reject Christ do so willingly, freely, and without excuse.

I know my salvation is secure because HE holds me, not because I’m holding on.

I know these truths fill me with eternal gratitude.

I know one final truth, if you’re not saved but the least bit curious, your name may also be written in the Lambs Book of Life.
