Three soils failed. Here’s the one that worked.

And the first thing to see is that it doesn’t merely work. It does something no field in Galilee had ever done.

What Matthew 13:23 Says

“As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty” (Matthew 13:23).

Two marks, and the other three soils have neither.

He understands. That is the exact failure of the path, where the man hears and does not understand (Matthew 13:19). This is not intellectual capacity. Paul says the natural man is “not able” to grasp spiritual things (1 Corinthians 2:14). Where understanding appears, something happened to the man that he did not do to himself.

He bears fruit. That is the failure of the rocky ground and the thorns. One withers before fruit. The other is choked and “proves unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22).

Then come the numbers.

Why Thirtyfold Is Already Impossible?

Sit with the figures, because a first-century farmer hearing them would have.

Scholars estimate the average seed-to-yield ratio for a Palestinian peasant at roughly five to one. Five grains harvested for every grain sown. And agronomists treat a ratio of three to one as the bare minimum required to sustain human life.

Christ starts His scale at thirty.

His floor is six times the average harvest. His ceiling is twenty times that. He is describing a return ten to thirty times what a family needed simply to survive.

That is not farming language. No soil does this. Not deep soil, not well-watered soil, not soil in a good year with favorable weather.

Scripture records exactly one hundredfold harvest, and the text does not credit the farmer: “And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The LORD blessed him” (Genesis 26:12).

The explanation arrives in the next sentence.

What the Extravagance Tells Us

The yield is impossible because the life producing it is not natural life.

This is where the whole parable has been heading. Three soils produced nothing, because nothing supernatural happened in them. The fourth produces massively, because something supernatural occurs.

Peter names the mechanism. New birth comes “not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

Imperishable seed does not yield perishable returns.

And the numbers answer the question the first three soils raised. If the ground cannot improve itself, then the harvest is not something the man accomplished.

It is evidence of what was done to him.

“We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

Scripture says who prepares the ground. Matthew 13 does not, and I will not put words in Christ’s mouth. But a harvest no field ever produced did not come from the field.

Do Not Turn the Scale into a Ranking

Christ gives three yields and grades none of them.

He does not call thirty disappointing or a hundred exemplary. All three sit under one heading: this is what good soil does.

The comparison in the text is not between thirty and a hundred. It is between all of them and zero.

That matters. The man measuring his life against a more visibly fruitful believer is running a comparison Christ never runs. The question is not how much. It is whether anything is there.

And notice what the list excludes. Three yields, every one a harvest. He does not add and some none.

The fruitless category is not in the text.

What Fruit Actually Is

Scripture uses the word in more than one sense.

• Character. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23). Produced by the Spirit, not manufactured by man.

• Conduct. “Bearing fruit in every good work” (Colossians 1:10).

• Converts. Paul hoped to reap “some harvest” among the Romans (Romans 1:13). The word is καρπός, “fruit,” and in context the fruit is people brought to faith.

• Repentance. “Bear fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8).

• Worship. “The fruit of lips that acknowledge his name” (Hebrews 13:15).

So fruit is not one measurable output you tally at year-end. It is a whole life producing what it was regenerated to produce.

And the Father’s stake in it is stated plainly: “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples” (John 15:8).

The Sower’s Comfort

Four soils, and here is where the series lands for the man scattering seed.

You will sow on a great deal of path. You will watch rocky-ground responses sprout and vanish. You will sit beside men who never bore fruit at all, and never know it.

You will also not see the harvest.

So the accounting is not ours. “Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7).

And notice what the Master says to the servant He commends. Not, how many did you save? Not, what was your yield?

“Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little” (Matthew 25:21).

“Faithful” is the word. Paul says the same of laborers: each is rewarded “according to his labor” (1 Corinthians 3:8), not according to his harvest.

But run the math one more time. The best a Galilean farmer could hope for from a single grain was five, maybe ten. One grain in good soil returns thirty, sixty, a hundred.

Some of those conversations were not conversations. They were harvests. You will find out which ones in heaven.

Scatter the seed. He owns the field, He prepares the ground, and He sets the yield.

What Matthew 13:22 Actually Says

“As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22).

Luke adds a third thorn:

“they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature” (Luke 8:14).

Mark adds a fourth:

“the desires for other things enter in and choke the word” (Mark 4:19).

Not one of those is a sin the church disciplines. Every one of them is a normal part of being alive.

Nothing Dies Here

Read the verse carefully, because the wording matters more than it appears.

Christ does not say this man’s faith dies. He does not say the plant withers, as He said of the rocky ground. He says the word is choked, and the result proves unfruitful.

Luke is even gentler in language and harsher in substance: “their fruit does not mature.” Something grows. It just never becomes anything.

That is the thorny ground. Not a collapse. A long, quiet failure to produce.

Why The Thorny Soil Is the Hardest to Spot

The rocky-ground man declares himself when he walks away. Everyone notices. Someone might even go after him. We looked at him last week.

The thorny-ground man never gives you a reason to look twice. And the man most likely to be deceived is the man himself.

He is in his seat. He gives. He serves on a committee. He knows the vocabulary and has held the same pew for thirty years. He blends in completely, which is exactly what a tare does.

Christ told that parable in the same chapter. The field holds sons of the kingdom and sons of the evil one together, and nobody separates them until the harvest at the close of the age (Matthew 13:24–30, decoded in 13:36–43). The defining feature of a tare is not that it looks impressive.

And Christ tells us how it ends. “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’... And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you’” (Matthew 7:22–23).

Not you lost Me. “I never knew you.”

Many, He said. Not a few.

What Chokes: Cares, Riches and Pleasures, and Desires

Three thorns, and none of them announce themselves as rivals to Christ.

Cares. Anxiety about the ordinary: the job, the mortgage, the doctor’s call, the kids. Christ addressed this directly in the Sermon on the Mount and located the problem precisely: “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). The cares are real. The question is what sits first.

Riches and pleasures. Christ calls it the deceitfulness of riches, and deceit is the operative word. Money does not announce that it is taking the place of God. It presents itself as security, and the man who has it stops feeling his need. Luke pairs riches with pleasures for a reason: what wealth buys is comfort, and comfort removes the last thing that drove a man to his knees. Paul is blunt about the mechanism: “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Timothy 6:10).

Desires for other things. Mark’s phrase is the broadest and, I think, the most convicting. Not evil things. Other things. A hobby, a project, a team to follow, a second career. The thorn does not have to be wicked to choke. It only has to grow faster.

Scripture’s Example:

Demas

Paul names one man twice as a fellow worker: Demas, greeted alongside Mark, Aristarchus, and Luke (Philemon 24), and again in Colossians 4:14.

Then, years later, from the second Roman imprisonment:

“Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica” (2 Timothy 4:10).

In love with this present world. That is Matthew 13:22 in Paul’s own vocabulary.

Notice that Demas did not have a theological crisis. There is no recorded argument, no scandal, no public renunciation. He served for years, and then something he loved more pulled him away.

A caution, because I will not overstate what Scripture says. The text tells us Demas deserted Paul and names the cause. It does not tell us the state of his soul, and neither will I. What it gives us is the mechanism, and the mechanism is exactly the thorns:

The Rich Young Ruler

There is another, and Christ let him walk.

He asked the right question, addressed Christ respectfully, and claimed to have kept the commandments from his youth. “And Jesus, looking at him, loved him” (Mark 10:21). Then came the one instruction that touched the thorn: sell what you have and come follow Me.

“Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions” (Mark 10:22).

Christ did not chase him. He did not soften the terms or offer a smaller version of the invitation. He let the thorn reveal itself.

How to Examine Your Own Ground

The thorny ground is the soil most likely to be reading this very post, because the rocky-ground man left years ago, and the path never stayed long enough to read it.

So ask harder questions than whether you believe.

• What has grown in the last five years, your fruit or your holdings?

• When Scripture and your schedule collide, which one yields?

• Is there an instruction of Christ you have quietly decided does not apply to your situation?

• If following Him cost you the thing you are most reluctant to name right now, would you still follow?

That last question is the rich young ruler’s question. He answered it by walking away, which is at least an honest answer.

One Word of Comfort

If those questions alarmed you, hear this carefully.

Thorny ground does not examine itself. The choked plant has no idea it is being choked; that is the nature of a slow strangling. The man whose fruit never matures is not lying awake over it.

You are awake. That is not the behavior of thorny soil.

“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5).

Paul gave that command to people he expected to pass it.

The thorns are real. The question is whether you can name yours.

Christ told us what evangelism would actually look like, and it’s not what the courses, seminars, and training programs promise.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).

This was not a suggestion for those with the gift of evangelism. It was a command to everyone who follows Christ.

Then He told a story about a farmer, and three of the four soils produced nothing.

The Sower, the Seed, and the Soil

Matthew 13 opens with a farmer going out to sow his seed. There are four landing places, with two distinct outcomes. And remarkably, Christ decodes it Himself so no one can misread it (Matthew 13:18–23).

Start with the seed, because Scripture defines it three times and never leaves us in the dark.

“The word of the kingdom” (Matthew 13:19).
“The sower sows the word” (Mark 4:14).
“The seed is the word of God” (Luke 8:11).

Peter says the same thing about how new birth happens: through “the living and abiding word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

The seed is the gospel.

It is not our testimony, the latest evangelism program, or our persuasion. It’s the message.

We are the sowers. Every believer scattering that word.

Paul describes the division of labor exactly: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:6). Then he adds the line that should govern all our expectations: “neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7).

And the soil is the human heart. Christ says so plainly of the first case, where the evil one snatches away “what has been sown in his heart” (Matthew 13:19).

Four soils. The path, the rocky ground, the thorns, and the good soil.

Three produce nothing. Only one produces a harvest.

The Soil Is Not Neutral

The farmer does not choose his soil in this parable, and the soil does not improve itself. Christ presents the ground as He finds it. The condition determines the outcome.

Scripture tells us who prepares the ground, and it’s not the sower.

“I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).

Lydia heard Paul, and “the Lord opened her heart to pay attention” (Acts 16:14).

I will maintain that God’s electing purpose stands behind what ground receives the word. But let me be careful: Matthew 13 never uses the language of election. That connection is an inference drawn from other texts, not a statement this parable makes directly. I do believe it is the right inference though.

What the parable says is enough. The sower cannot manufacture a harvest.

He can only be faithful with the seed.

This Week: The Rocky Ground

“As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away” (Matthew 13:20–21).

Read that again.

Almost every marker of what we normally view as a successful evangelistic encounter is present.

He hears. He receives. He receives immediately. He even receives with joy. But Luke goes further: these hearers “believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away” (Luke 8:13).

If you led this man to a decision, you would have reported a conversion. You would have been sincere. And you would have been wrong.

Notice what is missing. Root.

Root grows underground. It’s the part no one can photograph, count, or hold up as a result. And it is the only part that determines whether the plant survives when the sun comes up.

Why the Emotional Appeal Produces Rocky Ground

A seed on thin soil over rocks sprouts faster than seed in deep earth.

It has nowhere to go but up.

And that’s the whole danger.

Speed looks like success.

Work a crowd emotionally, and you will get a response. Play soft music, lower the lights, tell a sad story, push for the raised hand, extend the invitation one more verse.

Something will come up, and it will come up fast.

But an appeal aimed at feelings may produce a plant with no depth, because nothing has gone down deeply. Christ says the rocky-ground man has no root in himself. The failure is not in his circumstances. It is in soil that was never deep enough to hold him when the sun came.

And the sun always comes up.

Christ names it: tribulation and persecution, specifically “on account of the word” (Matthew 13:21). This is not general hardship. It’s the cost attached to the message itself: the family that now shuns you, the friends who stop calling, the coworkers who decide you think you’re better than they are.

Feeling got him in. But feeling has nothing to offer when following Christ begins to cost something.

Now notice what the appeal left out. Christ named the content of gospel preaching Himself, after the resurrection:

“that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations” (Luke 24:47).

Repentance is not advanced discipleship. It is the message.

Some call it optional because the word never appears in the book of John. The word Trinity also appears nowhere in Scripture, yet the doctrine is on every page. Absence of a term is not dismissive of the concept.

Take repentance out of the appeal, and you have removed the one demand that would have tested the ground before the sun did.

The Men Who Walked Away

Scripture gives us their names.

The disciples in John 6. Christ taught a hard saying, and “after this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him” (John 6:66). They are called disciples. They followed publicly. And John 6:64 gives the diagnosis: He knew from the beginning who did not believe.

Simon the magician. Acts records that he “himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip” (Acts 8:13). Both a profession and baptism. But then he tried to purchase the Spirit, and Peter told him, “you have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God” (Acts 8:21).

We even have a fashionable word for this now: “deconstruction,” as though the man were dismantling something real.

John had a simpler explanation:

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us” (1 John 2:19).

Their departure did not create the verdict.

It revealed one.

What This Means for Your Evangelism

None of this excuses us from the Great Commission. It corrects what we think we are doing while we obey it.

Sow the seed, not a feeling. The power is in the word, not in your delivery of it (Romans 1:16).

Stop counting sprouts. A response is not a harvest. Only time and fruit tell you which ground you were standing on.

Do not manufacture urgency that the gospel does not supply. If someone needs your pressure to respond, your pressure may be what they are responding to.

Preach the cost. Christ did; He told the crowds following Him to count it first (Luke 14:28). The rocky ground fails under tribulation, so tell them tribulation is coming as part of your message.

Leave the growth to God. You cannot turn rock into loam. God can, and He does (Ezekiel 36:26).

Notice that the parable never evaluates the sower. It evaluates the ground.

Paul states the principle outright: each laborer is rewarded “according to his labor” (1 Corinthians 3:8), not according to his harvest.

Continue to scatter the seed. Leave the fields to God.

We count those who heard. Christ counts what grew.

All four soils received the same seed. Yet only one bore fruit.

Christ makes a similar point in Matthew 7:13–14: “the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow…that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

The parable doesn’t give percentages. It does give a pattern, and the pattern starts with the “path.”

What Is the Hard Path in the Parable of the Sower?

A path has the same dirt as the field. Traffic made it different.

Farmers walked it. Travelers cut across it. Years of foot traffic packed it hard until nothing could get in.

Luke adds a detail the others leave out. In Luke 8:5, the seed “fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it.”

Trampled, then taken. Nothing ever got below the surface.

Christ explains it in Matthew 13:19: “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path.”

Notice what He did not say. He did not say the man refused to listen. He heard it. The failure came after hearing.

Why the Path Never Understands the Word

All four soils hear. Christ uses the same verb for every one of them, ἀκούω (akouō), and the repetition is deliberate.

Hearing is not the variable. Understanding is.

The verb for understanding is συνίημι (syniēmi): to bring together, to grasp how the pieces fit. In Christ’s explanation it appears twice. It is denied to the path in Matthew 13:19 and granted to the good soil in Matthew 13:23.

Christ had already said it of the crowd in Matthew 13:13: “hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”

The path hears the words and never puts it together. At best, it registers as a nice sermon. It never registers as truth, and never as a claim on the hearer.

Paul explains why. In 1 Corinthians 2:14, he writes, “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

The natural man hears the words. To him they sound like foolishness. He rejects them, and without the Spirit he cannot understand them.

That is the path.

That was all of us once. “We ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray” (Titus 3:3), and Paul put himself first in that sentence.

So the seed lies exposed on the surface. Then the evil one snatches it away: ἁρπάζω (harpazō), to seize suddenly and by force.

Christ uses the same verb in John 10:28, with the opposite result: “no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

Who are “them?” He answers in the next verse, John 10:29: “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all.”

Those the Father has given to the Son, they are the elect.

The evil one snatches the Word from the path. Yet, he cannot snatch a single sheep from Christ.

Is the Path the Only Lost Soil?

Here is where the path gets dangerous for the man in the pew.

Almost nobody sitting there thinks he is the path. He heard. He responded. Something happened. So the path becomes a category for other people, the ones who never showed up, he at least showed up.

And there is an entire school of teaching that agrees with him. In their version, the path is the only lost soil in the parable; the other two, rocky places and among the thorns, are believers with disappointing and unproductive lives.

I am going to take that up when we reach those soils, because they deserve a full hearing which cannot be answered in a paragraph.

For now, hold one thought. Christ drew the line between the path and the good soil at understanding, not hearing. Keep that line in view when we study the soils between them.

Examine Yourself: Which Soil in the Parable Are You?

Again, hearing is not the test. Christ’s test is understanding, and fruit is how that is verified.

Paul states it a command in 2 Corinthians 13:5: “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.”

So ask the path’s question honestly. When you hear the Word, does it come together? Does it land as a claim on your life, or as a sermon you have heard before? Can you say what the gospel demands of you, not only what it offers?

If the answer frightens you, that is not the path talking. The path doesn’t care.

Can God Break Up Hard Ground?

If the natural man cannot understand, how is anyone saved?

God changes the ground. He promised that in Ezekiel 36:26: “I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

He does not farm the ground He finds. He makes the ground He wants.

Lydia shows it happening. She was among the women listening to Paul by the river, and Acts 16:14 records what happened: “The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.”

Notice who opened it.

That is why the sower keeps sowing. He cannot see which ground God has prepared. He only knows which seed God uses.

Study the Other Soils in the Parable of the Sower

The path is only the first soil. The next two look more like church.

Next week: the rocky ground, which receives the word with joy and withers just as fast. Then the thorns, which let it grow and then choke it. Finally, the good soil.

The path heard everything. It kept nothing.

The Sower is one of them, and He said something about it He said nowhere else.

The other is the wheat and the tares, in the same chapter, and it covers similar ground: a field where the two crops look alike as they grow, and no one separates them until the harvest at the close of the age (Matthew 13:24–30, decoded in 13:36–43).

The Warning

The disciples came to Him privately, having just heard the story of the sower. They did not understand it. And before He untangled a single element, He asked them this:

“Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?” (Mark 4:13)

Read that again.

I take Him to be claiming that the Sower is crucial to understanding all the parables.

I am not alone in that. William Lane, in his commentary on Mark, writes that this parable supplies the key to the growth parables that follow, precisely because verse 13 makes understanding it essential to understanding any other. R. Alan Cole simply calls it the Parable of Parables.

MacArthur reads the verse more modestly; that parables in general require explanation, and a parable unexplained is a riddle. Both readings can stand; Christ explained this one first.

That is a striking claim about a story involving a farmer, some seed, and four patches of dirt.

So what does it all mean?

Why I Think It Is the Key

The other parables describe the kingdom: its growth, its value, its final separation, its King. The Sower describes something prior to all of that. It describes what happens when the word of God meets a human heart.

Every other parable assumes an audience. This one explains why the audience responds or doesn’t. The mustard seed, the leaven, the treasure, the net; each lands on ground this parable has already sorted.

There is a second layer, and Christ raises it Himself in the same passage.

The disciples ask why He teaches in parables at all. His answer is not what most expect. To the disciples has been given the secret of the kingdom; to those outside, everything comes in parables, “so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand” (Mark 4:11–12). He is quoting Isaiah 6, where the same words pronounce judgment on a nation that had already refused to listen.

Now put the two side by side.

The parable describes a hearer who hears the word and does not understand it. And the parabolic method produces exactly that result in the crowd: they hear the story and do not understand it.

Christ is not only describing hard ground. He is demonstrating it in real time, with the people standing right in front of Him.

That is why the parables mark a turning point rather than a teaching technique. They are not simplified lessons for slow learners. They are revelation to those given ears, and concealment from those who heard clearly and rejected what they heard.

The Three Elements

Here is the entire story in one sentence: a sower went out to sow, the seed landed on four kinds of ground, and only one produced a crop.

Three elements, and every one of them is defined somewhere in Scripture rather than left to our imagination.

The sower. Someone is sowing, someone is scattering. The parable does not linger on him, and that hesitation is itself instructive. He has one job, and the story has almost nothing else to say about him.

The seed. There is only one kind of seed, scattered everywhere, identical in every case. The seed never varies. Hold that thought, because it matters more than anything else in the parable, and Scripture tells us plainly what it is.

The soil. Four grounds: a hard path, thin dirt over rock, a patch full of thorns, and good earth. Same seed, but four outcomes.

Over the next four weeks, I will take each soil in turn, because each one describes people you know. Some of them are in your family. One of them is in your mirror.

What We Have Tried Instead

Before we get there, consider what the modern church has done with this dilemma.

The gospel goes out and is rejected, or received superficially, or received for a while and then abandoned. That pattern is discouraging, and it has produced two categories of proposed solutions. Both are worth naming plainly.

Work on the sower.

The reasoning is that the message is fine, but the messenger is the obstacle. So: production values, lighting, a contemporary band, fog machines, a casual atmosphere engineered so no visitor feels out of place. Sermons trimmed to twenty minutes and oriented toward self-improvement. Demographic studies to identify who lives within driving distance and what they want from a Sunday morning.

Supporters say the entire apparatus exists to reach the unsaved with the gospel, and I take that intent at face value. Most of the people who built these systems were trying to reach the lost.

Work on the seed.

This is the graver move, and the architects stated it plainly. In The Purpose Driven Church, in a chapter on how Jesus attracted crowds, Rick Warren argues that the place to start is a person’s felt needs, and explains why with a sales analogy: a good salesman begins with the customer’s needs, not the product. Lee Strobel’s counsel ran the same direction; if the unchurched man suffers from sagging self-esteem, tell him how much he matters to God. And the closing move is a model prayer. Warren’s runs: “Jesus, I believe in you and I receive you.” Then: if you sincerely meant it, congratulations, welcome to the family of God.

It’s a common and popular sequence, but notice what’s missing.

• No conviction of sin.

• No repentance.

• No counting the cost.

The pattern across this broader movement is consistent: minimal reference to sin, hell, or judgment, on the theory that these topics drive visitors away.

Here is what makes this more than a style disagreement. Romans 1:16 locates the power in the message itself; the gospel “is the power of God for salvation.” Remove the diagnosis and the cure is unintelligible. A message engineered to be inoffensive has been engineered out of the one property that made it work.

Now Set That Beside the Parable

One seed, identical in every case. One sower, about whom the parable says essentially nothing: not his clothing, not his method, not his technique. Four outcomes.

Whatever accounts for the difference in this story, it is not the seed, and it is not the sower. Christ holds both constant and puts the variable somewhere else entirely.

Which raises the question this series exists to answer. If the difference is not in the message and not in the messenger, where is it? And if it is located somewhere neither we nor our methods can reach, what exactly are we doing when we tune the one and soften the other?

What Is Coming

Four posts, one soil each.

The hard path, where the seed never gets below the surface. The rocky ground, where it comes up fast and dies faster. The thorns, where it grows for years and yet never produces anything. And the good soil, where the yields Christ names are so extravagant that no first-century farmer would have believed them.

Along the way, two questions the parable will answer.

What exactly is the seed? Scripture defines it three separate times, in three Gospels, and the definition will change how you think about the conversation you have been dreading.

And who prepares the ground?

That one is the question underneath the whole parable. Christ tells the disciples the ground determines the harvest. He does not, in this story, tell them where good ground comes from.

But Scripture tells us elsewhere. And when you see it, the pressure you have been carrying about the people you love will lift considerably.

Who was responsible? Electrical arcing on an out-of-service Southern California Edison tower, two arcs in quick succession, and burning debris dropped onto dry brush. Seconds later the grass was ablaze, and within hours much of Altadena was destroyed.

Nobody meant for it to happen.

Over to the East Coast.

On a January evening in Duxbury, Massachusetts, Lindsay Clancy sent her husband for takeout, then strangled their three small children: Cora, five; Dawson, three; and Callan, eight months old. She has never contested doing it.

Her trial ended in September 2026 with a hung jury. Eleven of the twelve jurors were prepared to exonerate her.

Where did the blame land? Postpartum depression. Her medications. The psychiatrists who prescribed them. The one juror who refused to acquit her.

Blame was everywhere. It simply never landed on the mother who took the lives of her own children.

Two tragedies, with one question beneath both of them.

How could God allow this?

The Two Usual Defenses

Most people have an answer ready, and it generally comes in one of two forms.

The first defense says God is not strong enough.

I have written about this topic previously. In 1981, Rabbi Harold Kushner buried his son and wrote the best-seller When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

His conclusion: God is all-loving, but not all-powerful. He would stop your suffering if He could. But, He can’t.

Kushner’s grief was genuine, and the question honest. But recognize what his answer costs. A God who wants to stop your suffering but is unable, is a God who can’t guarantee anything else either, including the comfort Kushner was offering.

The second defense says God is strong enough, but he allows it.

This is where many Christians land. He sees it. He’s powerful enough to stop it. He just chooses not to.

We use the term “allow” and pause there, because the next question is insufferable. Why?

Does God have a purpose or not?

No purpose means indifference, and no one would say that of a loving God. A town destroyed, and three children are dead. Both must have meant something to Him.

So He must have had a purpose. Scripture says He appointed what both would accomplish. That is ordination, and it is the doctrine this defense was built to avoid.

Isaiah 46:10: “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.”

Both defenses are rescue attempts. Kushner gives up God’s power so He couldn’t be blamed. Christians give up God’s involvement so He wouldn’t be implicated. Both defend one attribute by sacrificing another.

God requires no such trade.

Ephesians 1:11 says He “works all things according to the counsel of his will.”

All things. And this part is critical: He does not merely allow history to take place; He orchestrates history. All of it.

Which puts the question back where it started. If God governs a wildfire and a murder alike, what is His responsibility for each?

That cannot be answered until two words are defined: evil and calamity.

Evil Is Corrupted Good

Evil is not a substance. Evil is parasitic. It has no life of its own; it survives by corrupting something good that God has made.

Adultery requires marriage. Theft requires property. A lie requires the truth it distorts. Nothing evil is original. Every instance is a “good gift” subverted from God's intended use.

When corruption happens in a man, Scripture calls it sin.

1 John 3:4: “sin is lawlessness.” The law comes first; sin breaks it.

So sin, evil in its moral form, requires three things. A law. A will capable of obeying or disobeying. And a man who refuses.

Calamity Is Judgment On Creation

Now apply that definition to the Altadena fire.

Fire has no will. It is under no command. It cannot obey, nor can it rebel. A flame consumes dry brush because that’s the nature of fire, and dry brush is no more guilty of being dry than a desert is guilty of being hot.

The Bible’s category for this is calamity. Disaster and suffering with no guilty party.

Isaiah 45:7: “I make well-being and create calamity.”

The Hebrew word, ra’, means harm or ruin. Calamity exists because the creation itself is under judgment.

Genesis 3:17: “cursed is the ground because of you.” Romans 8:20: “the creation was subjected to futility,” by the One who subjected it.

Thorns that pierce. Droughts that sear. Winds that turn a California hillside into kindling. Fault lines, floodwater, cancer cells, the shark in the shallows. None of it is rebellion. All of it is a cursed creation, being true to its nature. None of this existed before the fall.

And God sends it directly.

Amos 3:6: “Does disaster come to a city, unless the LORD has done it?”

In Hebrew, that is a rhetorical question built on a negative, which demands the answer: yes. Altadena was a city. The Lord orchestrated it.

One caution. That God sends disaster does not mean those in its path were worse sinners than anyone else. Christ shut that door, and we will come to His words. Calamity is the standing sentence on a world cursed through Adam, not a verdict on the people it lands on.

Sin Is Conceived In Us

James 1:13 rules out one source: “God cannot be tempted with evil, and He himself tempts no one.”

James 1:14-15 names the actual offender. A man is tempted “when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.” Then, “desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin.”

James is depicting a pregnancy, and notice what is missing. No one outside the man fathers this. His own lust conceives, and sin is what he gives birth to.

This is a distinction everything turns on. To ordain is to determine that something will happen and appoint what it will accomplish. To initiate is to conceive the desire and commit the evil. God does the first but never the second.

Isaiah 46:10: “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.”

So Who Is To Blame?

For calamity, no one is guilty, and that is not the same as saying nobody did it. God sends disaster on a world already under judgment, and He has never denied doing it.

Blame requires a wrong, and there is no wrong here. He owes no excuse for judging a world that warranted the curse. What He gives instead is a warning.

Luke 13:5, after a tower fell on eighteen men: “unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

For evil, blame the one whose desire conceived it. Every time. No diagnosis, no prescription, and no sympathetic jury moves that verdict.

Ezekiel 18:20: "The wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself."

2 Corinthians 5:10 — "each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil."

Notice that both roads end in the same place. The fire killed nineteen. The mother killed three. Different categories, different verdicts, same result.

That is because death is not specific to either. It is the sentence due to the sin of Adam being carried out throughout history.

Romans 6:23: “the wages of sin is death.”

Ephesians 2:1 describes the unconverted as “dead in their trespasses and sins” while they are still walking around.

Before salvation, spiritual death is already in force. Physical death arrives on a day God alone sets.

Job 14:5: “his days are determined... you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass.”

Scripture does not tell us what God accomplished in any particular death, and we are never invited to speculate. However, He tells us why He ordained a world containing both evil and calamity.

Proverbs 16:4: “The LORD has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.”

Romans 9:23: “to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy.”

A world with no sin in it would be a world where His wrath was never seen and His mercy had no one to save.

He ordained a world where both His wrath and His mercy would be displayed. Then He poured the wrath out on His own Son so that mercy could reach us.

God does not need your defense. He commands your repentance.

Summary

• A deadly wildfire and a mother who murders her children raise the same question: how could God allow this?

• Both standard defenses fail. One surrenders God’s power, the other His involvement. He asks for neither.

• Evil is corrupted good and requires a guilty will. Calamity is judgment on a cursed creation and has no guilty party.

• God ordains without initiating. He appointed the cross; Judas supplied the greed.

• Blame the sinner for evil. For calamity, God did it yet owes no apology.

• Death is Adam's judgment, paid out on a day already appointed.

• He ordained a world where both His wrath and His mercy would be displayed. Then He poured the wrath on His own Son so that mercy could reach us.

Romans 11:36: “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever.”

Where It Broke for Me

A men’s Bible study on Matthew 13. The Parable of the Sower and the Seed.

Christ tells it, then does something He almost never does: He decodes it, bit by bit, so the disciples cannot misread it.

Only one other parable gets that same treatment, and it sits in the same chapter: the wheat and the tares, where the field holds sons of the kingdom and sons of the evil one together, indistinguishable until the harvest at the end of the age (Matthew 13:24–30, decoded in 13:36–43).

He puts it to them directly: “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?” (Mark 4:13).

The seed sown along the path hears the word and does not understand it, and the evil one snatches away what was sown in his heart (Matthew 13:19).

The seed sown on rocky ground hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, “yet he has no root”; when tribulation comes, he falls away (Matthew 13:20–21).

The seed sown among thorns hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke it, “and it proves unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22).

Only the fourth seed sown on good soil hears, understands, and bears fruit (Matthew 13:23).

Four hearers. Three failures. One person produces.

My read was straightforward: no root, no fruit, no life.

My Free Grace brothers concede the path, then read the rocky ground and the thorns as saved men with a poor harvest.

Free Grace may call that man saved. I cannot. And Scripture will not let me say he lost what he had: “no one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:28). John leaves a door open: “They went out from us, but they were not of us” (1 John 2:19).

The question was never whether he could lose salvation.

It is whether he ever had it in the first place.

He did not lose life. It never had root.

Why Four Soils and Not Two

Take what follows as my own reading rather than settled ground.

If the point were simply saved and lost, it would seem that a two-soil parable would suffice: believer and non-believer. I think Christ is also addressing self-deception.

The path seed is dead on arrival. It never had a chance.

The rocky ground seed dies shortly after a genuine-looking sprouting.

The thorny ground never produces at all, though it can blend in for years. This is the wheat and the tares in one man: he stays in his seat, indistinguishable from the rest, and hears the verdict at the end.

Finally, the seed sown on good soil hears, understands, and brings forth fruit.

One soil produces life. Three do not, and they are sorted by how long the illusion holds.

The seeds on the path never germinate at all; the birds eat them immediately.

The rocky ground is the man who blazes and vanishes, and John already told us what we watched: “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us” (1 John 2:19). The departure did not create the verdict. It revealed one.

Deconstruction is the latest fashionable word for this, as though the man were dismantling something real. John's account is simpler. There was never anything to take apart.

Finally, there’s the thorny ground verdict: “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord’... And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you’” (Matthew 7:22–23).

Not “you lost Me.” “I never knew you.”

Now, look at what Christ says the good soil produces: “he indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty” (Matthew 13:23). Three yields, and every one of them a harvest.

He does not add “…but in another case nothing.”

That option is not in the text. Christ describes four hearers and gives the fruitless man no place among the saved. Free Grace insists that man exists.

One of them is describing something the other cannot find.

The Exchange, Verse by Verse

James 2:14 — “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?”
Free Grace: He writes to brothers. Save means rescue from temporal consequences, not hell.
Lordship: The definite article in ἡ πίστις (hē pistis) points back to the faith the man just claimed, which is why the ESV renders it “that faith.” James examines a profession, not a possession.

James 2:17 — “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
Free Grace: Dead means unproductive. A dead branch is still wood.
Lordship: The Greek word is νεκρά (nekra), a corpse; the same word Paul uses in Ephesians 2:1 for men dead in sin. James had milder options, yet chose corpse .

James 2:19 — “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”
Free Grace: Demons are not the analogy; they never trusted Christ for salvation.
Lordship: Assent without submission is exactly what the demons hold. It is not saving faith in them, and it is not saving faith in man.

James 2:26 — “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.”
Free Grace: A corpse is still a real body. Dead faith is real faith minus its output.
Lordship: A corpse is not a body doing less. It has stopped being a body at all.

Not the Carnal Christian

One clarification, because this is where the argument often gets deflected.

I am not denying that a true believer can fall hard and stay down for a while. David after Bathsheba. Peter at the fire. The Corinthians, whom Paul called fleshly and infants in Christ while telling them the Spirit dwelt in them (1 Corinthians 3:1, 3:16).

That is not what we are discussing. The question is not whether a transformed life can go dark for a season or take time to grow. It is whether an untransformed life counts as saved at all.

1 John 3:9 does not say that the born-again man never sins. It says he cannot keep on practicing sin, because God’s seed abides in him. A carnal Christian has that seed and grieves it. The man James warns has nothing to grieve.

Different Gospel or Harmless Allowance?

So is this an in-house error, like the disagreement over the timing of the rapture? Or is it something more serious?

MacArthur’s answer is on record at Grace to You: easy-believism makes room for a cheap and meaningless faith, one exercised with no impact on a life of sin, and that is not saving faith.

Sproul’s answer, per Ligonier, is that dismissing the necessity of obedience leads straight to antinomianism. Jude saw it coming: men who “pervert the grace of our God into sensuality” (Jude 4).

James Montgomery Boice called the construction a “defective theology.”

That’s the phrase I keep coming back to, because it names the problem without overstating it.

I am not saying Free Grace men are unsaved; I believe most of them are my brothers, and their instinct to guard grace from works is the right one, and even admirable.

Their error is not about what saves. It is about what salvation yields.

They have built a system in which regeneration may produce nothing, and Scripture knows no such regeneration.

2 Corinthians 5:17 knows a new creation.

Ephesians 2:10 knows workmanship created for good works.

John 15:8 knows a Father glorified when His people bear much fruit.

A new birth that produces nothing is not a smaller version of new birth.

It is a counterfeit wearing its name.

What This Means on Sunday

A doctrine is not judged by its best adherents. It is judged by what it licenses.

This one hands Christian assurance to Christ-less lives. It takes the man James wrote to warn, the man of words and no works, and files him under “carnal Christian” where the warning can never reach him.

Somewhere in your church is a man resting his eternity on a decision that changed nothing.

Free Grace tells him he is safe. James tells him to check for a pulse.

• Take 2 Corinthians 13:5 seriously: examine yourself, whether you are in the faith.

• Do not ask whether you prayed a prayer. Ask whether anything is alive.

• If a brother holds this position, engage the texts, not the man. His error is real; so, often, is his faith.

God did not predestine men to a decision. He predestined them “to be conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29). And Paul says the work is already underway: “we all, with unveiled face... are being transformed” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

We all. Paul left no one out.

A doctrine that permits a man to arrive nowhere is not describing the road God laid.

I said in March that the line between these camps was one I could not draw cleanly. James drew it for me.

Dead things do not need encouragement. They need resurrection.

The Transformative Power of Scripture Memorization

According to a 2014 Barna Group survey, over 80% of professing Christians have never memorized a single verse of Scripture in their entire Christian life.

A 2019 LifeWay Research study found that most Christians can recall fewer than five verses from memory. This leaves them spiritually malnourished, vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks, and unable to minister to others in moments of urgent need.

Scripture memorization doesn’t merely enhance your biblical knowledge; it transforms your mind, guards your heart against sin, and equips you with divine wisdom precisely when worldly counsel fails you. Having God’s Word hidden in your heart becomes your greatest spiritual asset when you face trials and temptations or must make critical decisions.

Begin by selecting one verse from this list each week, writing it on an index card, and reviewing it daily during quiet time.

How To Store Up God’s Word So It Produces Spiritual Fruit

These twelve verses represent foundational truths that anchor your faith in every circumstance.

Start with God’s character: Memorize Romans 8:28 – “And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” This verse establishes God’s sovereign control over every circumstance in the believer’s life.

Address your new nature in Christ: Commit Galatians 2:20 to memory – “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” This reminds us of our new identity in Christ and the power available to overcome sin.

Embrace God’s sufficiency: Hide Philippians 4:13 in your heart – “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” This verse doesn’t promise you can accomplish anything you desire but teaches contentment in any circumstance God places you in, knowing Christ will supply the strength needed for whatever He calls you to do.

Select the verse that addresses your greatest spiritual need and begin committing it to memory today. Remember that Scripture memorization is not optional for the earnest disciple.

Here’s Why You Should Memorize These Specific Verses

These twelve verses provide the theological foundation every believer needs for spiritual maturity.

These passages address the doctrines of God’s sovereignty, man’s sinfulness, Christ’s redemptive work, the believer’s sanctification, and our eternal hope—equipping you with biblical answers to life’s most challenging questions.

For example (and as a bonus verse): When individuals struggle with anxiety, you can direct them to Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

This verse doesn’t merely offer psychological comfort; it provides divine instruction for replacing anxiety with prayer, resulting in supernatural peace that guards your mind and emotions. By memorizing this passage, you gain instant access to God’s prescription for anxiety, enabling you to counsel yourself biblically when worry threatens to overwhelm you.

The Word of God memorized becomes the sword of the Spirit wielded.

Here are the remaining verses that complete our list of twelve essential passages to memorize:

The Gospel Foundation

Understand God’s love: Meditate on John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

This verse encapsulates the very heart of the gospel—God’s sacrificial love that provides salvation to all who believe. “So” doesn’t mean how much God loves us, it means “in which way” God showed His love. How vs. how much. He showed His love by sending His son as a substitute sacrifice for our sins.

Recognize human depravity: Internalize Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This verse establishes humanity’s universal condition—complete moral failure before God’s perfect standard.

Grasp sin’s consequence and God’s remedy: Commit Romans 6:23 to memory – “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse contrasts what we deserve (death) with what God freely offers (eternal life).

The Nature of Salvation

Understand salvation by grace: Memorize Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” This verse demolishes all human attempts at self-righteousness and establishes salvation as a sovereign work of God.

The Power of Scripture

Value Scripture’s authority: Learn 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” This verse establishes the divine origin and practical sufficiency of Scripture for all matters of faith and practice.

Recognize Scripture’s power: Remember Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” This verse reveals Scripture’s supernatural capacity to penetrate our innermost being.

The Christian Walk

Embrace obedience: Memorize James 1:22 – “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” This verse exposes the self-deception of merely intellectual Christianity that never translates into obedient living.

Trust God’s forgiveness: Hold fast to 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just

to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This verse provides the divine promise of complete forgiveness when we confess our sins.

Purpose to avoid sin: Commit Psalm 119:11 to memory – “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” This verse reveals the true power of Scripture against sin in the believer’s life.

The Eternal Investment That Never Fails

God’s Word stands eternal in a world of uncertainty, where earthly wisdom fails, and human counsel disappoints.

Growing up, there were two kinds of people in my neighborhood: Christians and Jews.

The difference seemed simple enough to a boy. Christians celebrated Christmas. Jews, as far as I could tell, had a longer Christmas that started earlier.

How a Christian is defined is like, currently, how a woman is defined; it’s become a matter of identification. Of course, this blurs any lines of distinctiveness. Far enough to cover groups whose answers cannot all be true on the most basic spiritual question of all: How is a man saved?

Millions claim the label. Ask someone what separates his version of Christianity from the guy down the street, and he’s likely to suggest that he goes to the “new” church.

First Narrowing: Faith, Not Works

Here’s where I would start my definition of Christian—those who believe that salvation is by faith and not by works.

Ephesians 2:8–9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

That single line excludes a great number of what the world files under Christian.

Rome formally condemned justification by faith alone at the Council of Trent and holds that a man is justified through faith, sacraments, and cooperation with grace. Mormonism teaches that grace saves after all we can do. Both would defend those positions openly. Neither is a misunderstanding to be cleared up; it is a different gospel.

Second Narrowing: The Five Solas

The Reformers faced the same question and answered with five statements.

I wrote earlier about the Five Solas and why they still matter.

Luther’s protest began with indulgences, certificates promising forgiveness in exchange for money, but his real objection ran deeper: salvation cannot be bought or earned.

What the Reformation recovered was a standard of belief simple enough to state in a sentence and sharp enough to divide truth from error.

Scripture alone is the authority for faith and practice. Faith alone justifies, apart from works. Grace alone saves, unearned. Christ alone mediates, with no other name given among men. God alone receives the glory.

Most churches no longer teach this, and the result is congregations who cannot say what they believe.

Where Faithful Men Still Divide

Those statements place you inside historic Protestantism.

Keep the proportions straight before going further. What follows divides faithful men, but it divides them inside a shared house: the Trinity, the deity of Christ, His substitutionary death, His bodily resurrection, the authority of the Word, and the certainty of judgment. What divides them is real. But it is also a fraction of what unites them.

Now the lines. Three of them, and each runs straight through that agreement.

1. Calvinism and Arminianism. Does God's sovereign choice determine who is saved, or does man's free will make the final call?

2. Dispensationalism and Covenant Theology. Is national Israel distinct from the Church with a literal future, or is the Church the continuation of one covenant people?

3. Lordship Salvation and Free Grace. Does genuine faith always produce a transformed life, or can a man be saved, show no evidence of it, and simply suffer loss at the Bema judgment?

These are not hair-splitting. Each one changes how one reads their entire Bible.

I wrote earlier about how to find out where a teacher actually stands.

You cannot audit every sermon, and you do not need to. A preacher can navigate around a hard text for years; a commentary cannot. When an author reaches certain passages, his interpretation goes on record with his name on the cover.

Why bother? Because your teachers do not all believe the same thing, and most of them will never say so outright. Not from the pulpit, not in the introduction to a book, not in the first ten minutes of a podcast. Where a man stands on these questions shapes every text he touches, so knowing his position tells you how to weigh everything else he teaches.

Six verses do most of the diagnostic work.

On Calvinism, John 6:44 turns on one Greek word, helkō: does God draw irresistibly, or merely woo? Acts 13:48 settles anything left over, because the appointing precedes the believing.

On Israel, Romans 11:26 asks whether “all Israel” means ethnic Israel with a literal future or gets redefined as the Church; Revelation 20:4 asks whether the thousand years are literal or symbolic.

On assurance, James 2:17 and 1 John 2:3–4 ask whether obedience is evidence of genuine faith or merely a matter of rewards and fellowship.

One caution worth repeating: these three divisions are independent of each other. Where a man lands on one tells you nothing about where he lands on the others. R.C. Sproul and John MacArthur agreed on Calvinism and on Lordship Salvation, and parted only at Romans 11:26. You have to check all three.

A Necessary Qualification About The End Times

Someone will ask where amillennialism and post-tribulationism fit.

They are actual positions, but they do not form a fourth division. Two separate questions are getting confused.

The first is the millennium. Are the thousand years of Revelation 20 a literal future reign on earth, or a symbol of our present age?

The second is rapture timing, chiefly pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, pre-wrath, and post-tribulation.

The second question only exists within the first. Only a premillennialist has anything to time. An amillennialist has no tribulation-then-millennium sequence for a rapture to fall within.

As for rapture timing, it is an argument among premillennialists that settles no gospel question. A pre-trib and a post-trib dispensationalist will read John 6:44, Romans 11:26, and James 2:17 identically.

The three divisions change how a man reads his whole Bible. Rapture timing changes his calendar.

One outlier is worth knowing. Historic premillennialism sits in the gap between the systems. Spurgeon, George Eldon Ladd, and Francis Schaeffer all expected a literal earthly reign of Christ without holding a hard Israel and Church distinction. So if Revelation 20:4 reads a man as Dispensational, confirm it against Romans 11:26 before concluding anything.

Can The Bible Be Understood At All?

If godly men divide this way, an obvious objection follows. Maybe the book itself is unclear.

It is not!

I wrote earlier about the question that eventually surfaces in every Bible study: how can so many people read this book and walk away with different answers?

The hidden assumption is that disagreement proves the text is unclear. It does not. A hundred wrong answers to the same math problem do not make the problem unsolvable; they indict the students.

Several passages build the case.

Scripture is breathed out by God and given to equip (2 Timothy 3:16–17). The Spirit was given that we might understand (1 Corinthians 2:12). The natural man cannot receive it, because he finds it folly (1 Corinthians 2:14). A man with three doctorates and no new birth is not underqualified; he is disqualified.

But illumination is not interpretation. It gives you the capacity to receive spiritual truth; it does not hand you a finished reading.

Paul concedes we know in part (1 Corinthians 13:9), and Peter admitted parts of Paul were hard to understand (2 Peter 3:16). That is why MacArthur and Sproul, both indwelt and both diligent beyond what most of us will manage, still disagreed about Israel.

So two conditions, and neither is optional.

1. Be saved, because the natural man finds it folly.

2. Be diligent, because 2 Timothy 2:15 commands the workman to handle it rightly.

Skip the first and you get a scholar who cannot see. Skip the second and you get a believer who never learns to handle the book he already owns.

Why Does This Matter?

Many believers will encounter these divisions for the first time.

Pulpits carry much of the blame, having traded doctrine for encouragement and left congregations unable to state what they believe and why. But the Bible sitting unopened on the shelf is nobody's fault but its owner's.

That leaves you exposed twice.

The first exposure is in the pew. False teaching rarely announces itself. It arrives warm, fluent, and biblical, sounding better than the truth. If you cannot state what you believe, you will not notice when a teacher contradicts it.

Acts 17:11: describes the Bereans: "they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."

They were not cynics; they received the word eagerly. Then they checked it against Scripture, and Luke calls them noble for it.

The second exposure comes without warning. Sometimes a question, sometimes an opening; a coworker, a neighbor, your own grandchild, and you have one chance to answer.

1 Peter 3:15: “always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

The command is preparation. Not cleverness nor credentials.

Know what you believe. Know why. And know it well enough to hand it to someone else.

Sooner or later, someone in a Bible study asks: how can so many people read this book and walk away with different answers?

Fair question. It also carries a hidden assumption that needs to be dragged into the light.

The assumption is that disagreement proves the text is unclear. It does not. A hundred wrong answers to the same math problem do not make the problem unsolvable; they indict the students.

Scripture was never written to be misunderstood. Here is the biblical case, and the honest qualification that goes with it.

1. Scripture Is God-Breathed

2 Timothy 3:16–17: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

A book given to equip is a book meant to be understood.

2. The Holy Spirit Teaches Spiritual Truth

1 Corinthians 2:12: “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”

Read the purpose clause again: “that we might understand.”

The Spirit was not given so that believers would feel closer to God.

He was given so that they would know what God had said.

3. The Natural Man Cannot Understand Spiritual Things

1 Corinthians 2:14: “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”

This is the side most people skip.

Paul does not say that the unbeliever finds the Bible difficult. He says two things, and both land hard.

The unbeliever considers it “folly.” And he is “not able” to understand it.

That verdict falls on the reader, not the text.

A man with three doctorates and no new birth is not underqualified.

He is disqualified.

4. The Spirit Searches And Reveals

1 Corinthians 2:10: “these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”

God reveals, the Spirit conveys, the believer knows.

Every link in that chain is God’s work before it is yours.

5. Jesus Promises The Spirit’s Teaching Ministry

John 14:26: “the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things...”

This is not a fringe doctrine held by a few. It came from the Lord Himself, on the night He was betrayed.

6. The Spirit Guides Believers Into Truth

John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth...”

One caution.

The immediate context is Jesus speaking to His apostles about revelation they would receive and record. The application to ordinary believers is real, but derivative.

Anyone using this verse to justify private revelation has run past what the text says.

7. Scripture Came Through The Holy Spirit

2 Peter 1:21: “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

Scripture is not a human invention that God later approved.

Men wrote, and they were carried while they wrote.

8. Scripture Gives Understanding

Psalm 119:130: “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”

Light to the simple, not the credentialed.

Why MacArthur And Sproul Disagreed About Israel

Here is where the honest objection lands.

John MacArthur and R.C. Sproul both had the Spirit. Both submitted to Scripture. Both worked at the text harder than most of us ever will. Yet they did not agree about Israel in the last days.

Let’s start with all that they agreed with. God’s sovereignty. Human depravity. Grace alone through faith alone. The authority and inspiration of Scripture. Perseverance of the saints. The Lordship and deity of Christ.

That’s nearly everything that matters.

Then the divide. MacArthur read God’s promises to Israel in their normal, historical sense and saw a real future for the nation Israel.

Sproul read the biblical covenants as the framework of one continuous people of God and saw those promises fulfilled in Christ and His church.

MacArthur addressed it himself. Asked how he could share a platform with Sproul for so many years, he answered that what they agreed on was greater and vastly more important than what they did not, and that two men who agree on the gospel should be able to differ on secondary matters without condemning each other.

Same Spirit. Same Bible. Different conclusions.

Illumination Is Not Interpretation

Here is the distinction that resolves it.

Illumination does not hand you a finished interpretation. It gives you the capacity to receive spiritual truth.

You still have to interpret, using your own mind, your language, the historical context, and whatever theological framework you inherited.

Paul admits the limit: “For we know in part and we prophesy in part” (1 Corinthians 13:9).

Peter admits more. Of Paul’s own letters he wrote that “There are some things in them that are hard to understand” (2 Peter 3:16). Peter walked with Jesus for three years and still found parts of what Paul wrote hard to understand.

Difficulty is not failure. Difficulty is what diligence is for.

Six Safeguards Scripture Gives Us

If illumination guaranteed uniform results, none of these commands would exist.

Study diligently. Be “a worker who has no need to be ashamed” (2 Timothy 2:15).

Compare Scripture with Scripture. The Bereans were commended for “examining the Scriptures daily” (Acts 17:11).

Recognize your limits. “For now we see in a mirror dimly” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Depend on the Spirit. “that we might understand the things freely given us by God” (1 Corinthians 2:12).

Remember, teachers are accountable. “we who teach will be judged with greater strictness” (James 3:1).

Refuse to elevate a system above the text. “So let no one boast in men” (1 Corinthians 3:21).

Two Things Held At Once

Their disagreement does not prove there is no correct interpretation.

That is a different claim, and it does not follow. Two competent mathematicians can disagree about a hard problem; the problem still has an answer.

So hold both without flinching. God’s Word is objectively true and authoritative. Your present grasp of it is what is imperfect.

That is exactly why 2 Timothy 2:15 commands diligence rather than promising results. If accurate interpretation arrived automatically with the indwelling Spirit, the command would be pointless.

Two conditions, and neither is optional.

Be saved, because the natural man finds it “folly.”

Be diligent, because the workman is commanded to handle it rightly.

Skip the first and you get a scholar who cannot see.

Skip the second and you get a believer who never learns to handle the book he already owns.

The response was fast and hot.

How could anyone believe such a thing? Any fool can see we accept or reject salvation on our own.

Let me grant something first. Man has a will, and it’s free. It is so free that left to itself it uses that freedom the same way every time: to refuse God.

Romans 3:11: “no one seeks for God.”

Not a few. No one.

Acceptance is another matter.

Here is where the confusion starts. Looking back, every one of us can point to a salvation event. An aisle we walked. A sermon that broke us. A prayer we prayed in a car at two in the morning. Those things happened, and I am not taking them away.

But we mistake the evidence for the cause. We saw ourselves move, so we assume we started the motion.

Scripture, however, disagrees. And it isn’t vague, nor is it just one verse.

John 1:13 rules out the will of man: “who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” Three denials, one affirmation.

Romans 9:16 rules out effort alongside the desire: “So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”

James 1:18 names the will that actually did the work: “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth.” His, not ours.

Ephesians 2:8 claims it is a gift: “by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

Three writers, four contexts, one unified verdict. You don’t save yourself.

The Other Side of the Ledger

The other side is barren. Human wisdom maintains that man has a free will. But find one verse that grants man’s free will the ability to accept salvation.

There isn’t one.

Scripture commands men to repent and believe, but those commands establish duty, not ability. What it never does is locate the power to obey inside the man being commanded.

Isaiah 55:9: “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

We keep quoting that verse to comfort the suffering. The setting is a rebuke, not a consolation.

That assumption has consequences. It shapes what people believe about how salvation begins.

Two Positions

Ask who starts salvation and you’ll get two answers.

The first denies election outright. Man hears the gospel and decides—period, end of story.

Whatever else it is, that position is consistent. No election, no sovereign determination, and the decision rests with man.

The second is not consistent. Many believers affirm election but reserve the final vote for themselves. “I believe God chose me, yet I have the option to accept or reject that offer.”

Then there is the corridor of time explanation. God looks down through history, sees who will believe, and writes their names in the Lamb’s Book of Life. That sounds like election. It’s not. Here God ratifies man’s decision; He never initiated it. This is the first position wearing the vocabulary of election.

So the camps are not really two. They are actually one position and two ways of dressing it up.

Man decides. God responds.

This is not a suspicion. It shows up in the data.

What The Data Shows

Ligonier Ministries and Lifeway Research surveyed 3,001 American adults in January 2025.¹ Among respondents with Evangelical Beliefs, 60% agreed that the Holy Spirit gives a man new life before he believes. Only 41% agreed that God chose whom He would save before He created the world.

Read those two numbers together. A majority say God makes a man spiritually alive first. Yet only a minority say God picked which men.

They have granted that we do not choose. But they have withheld that He does.

The survey describes utter confusion. Scripture ends it.

There Is No Such Decision to Make

If we insist that man decides whether to accept God’s offer of salvation, we run into a cataclysmic collision with Scripture.

That collision has an address. It’s John 6, and the One speaking is Christ Himself.

He builds the argument from both ends and even eliminates any gap in the middle.

John 6:44: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”

That is the front door to salvation, and it is barred. Not no one will; no one can come.

Someone outside has to open it. And the verb Christ used is ἑλκύω (helkyō), which does not mean woo. It means haul. It is what you do to a loaded fishing net, or to a prisoner you are taking to court.

Dead men are not persuaded across that threshold with soft music and low lights. Christ says they are dragged by the Father.

John 6:37: “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.”

That is the back door, and it is barred too. Everyone given arrives. Not some. Not most. Everyone.

John 6:39 then nails it shut: “that I should lose nothing of all that He has given Me, but raise it up on the last day.”

This is absolute preservation, and it belongs to Him alone, not to us.

Now, let’s review what remains for human free will to do.

• It can’t initiate salvation because verse 44 forbids it.

• It can’t decline salvation because verse 37 guarantees arrival.

• It can’t even defect afterward, because verse 39 promises nothing is lost.

The decisions men imagine themselves making have no place to stand. Before the drawing, we are unable; after the drawing, we come.

The will is not bypassed. The drawn man comes willingly. Philippians 2:13 explains how:

“it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.”

God does not override the will. He changes what it wants.

Man’s will is not the hinge. It is the evidence.

Every decisive verb in the passage has the Father or the Son as its subject. The sinner appears only as the object: given, drawn, received, kept, and raised.

But What About The Invitations?

Many will counter with the open calls of Scripture.

John 3:16: “whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” and,

Revelation 22:17: “let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”

Those verses are real, and I won’t minimize them.

But notice what they establish and what they don’t.

They show that everyone who comes is received. They say nothing about who will come. And they say nothing about how a dead man gains the desire to come.

John 6:44 already answered that, and the second half of the verse is where the argument ends. The one drawn is the one raised. If the drawing reached every man, the raising would also reach every man.

The call goes out to every man; however, the power to accept it only comes from God.

Why This Matters

This is not about winning an argument. It is not even about whether a man is saved. It is about what salvation does to him afterward.

It changes what assurance is.

If your will started this, your will can end it, and every cold season becomes evidence against you. That is why people walk the aisle a second time, and a fifth. They are trying to re-perform a moment they cannot locate.

If God started it, the question is no longer whether you meant it enough. It is whether He did it. And you can read the answer off your life rather than off your feelings.

It kills boasting at the root.

If salvation turns on a decision, the difference between you and your unconverted neighbor lies within you. You were humbler. Smarter. More honest with yourself. Whatever you name it, you are the one who supplied it.

Paul closed that door.

Ephesians 2:8-9: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

It changes how you evangelize.

If conversion depends on technique, you’ll use technique. The lighting. The seventh verse of the invitation hymn. The pressure.

If conversion depends on God, you preach the same message to the hardest man in the room without adjusting the atmosphere. And you keep preaching it even after ten years of rejection.

Spurgeon held this doctrine and pleaded with sinners anyway. He said it plainly from the pulpit: “I know I never made a soul alive yet, and never shall.”

Then he begged them to come.

What To Do With This

Stop auditing the moment. Start reading the effects.

Preach Christ harder, not softer, and stop grading yourself on the results that you have no control over.

And if you are the one lying awake wondering whether it ever took, ask a different question. Not did I mean it. Ask what put the desire there in the first place, because that desire came not from your flesh.

John wrote an entire letter for those in this position. 1 John 5:13: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” He then gives the evidence. Love for the brothers. Ongoing obedience. Grief over sin rather than ease with it.

Those are visible from outside your own head.

Nobody has ever attended his own birth as a volunteer.

And now, suddenly, every check and balance has become a threat to it. Not just a threat. An existential peril. The Electoral College. The filibuster. The Supreme Court.

The word is doing work. Madison chose a different one on purpose.

This story starts somewhere that looks unrelated.

From Citizens To Peasants

Victor Davis Hanson’s The Dying Citizen traces six erosions of American citizenship: three that keep it from forming, and three that dismantle it once formed.

The first carries the other five. He calls it “Peasants.”

Citizenship, Hanson argues, is a condition rather than a status. It requires a broad middle class: people with enough property and enough savings so that no politician can buy their loyalty.

Strip that away, and the word peasant stops being a medieval curiosity. A peasant was not simply a poor man. A peasant was a man who worked land he could never own, and who therefore needed a patron more than he needed rights.

The order matters. Unelected bureaucracies and the “evolutionaries” who want our constitutional structure rewritten do not survive contact with a self-sufficient population. They need one that has already learned to depend on them.

They need peasants.

A man who owns a home defends the system that let him buy it. A man who has given up on ever buying one has no reason to defend anything.

Thus, the search for a solution; socialism appears to sound plausible.

This Is Not Just A Civics Problem

It’s easy to blame the pull of socialism, especially for those under forty, on a failure of civics education.

Yes, civics education is lacking. But that’s not all that’s driving this.

When the existing order stops delivering, “tear it down and start over” can sound rational. It is what one could conclude after running the numbers on his own life and finding no path forward.

But grievances do not explain the list that follows. Something else does.

Socialism cannot be enacted in a republic. Sixty Senate votes, fifty state legislatures, a Court that can undo it in a single term, and a president elected by regions rather than cities. A republic is built to make sweeping permanent change slow and difficult, and socialism is sweeping permanent change. The two are incompatible by construction.

So the program is not the first intent. The machinery is. Socialism does not need to win an argument; it needs a system where fifty-one percent is enough. That system has a name, and it is not a republic.

Four proposals are being pushed right now:

1. Expanding the Supreme Court or imposing term limits on the justices

2. Eliminating the filibuster

3. Abolishing the Electoral College

4. Admitting new states to reshape the Senate

These four are mainstream. Each one removes a brake. Collectively they push the country toward what Athens had.

The Government of Athens

Consider what those brakes are for.

1. A fixed court means today’s majority cannot rewrite the referee.

2. The filibuster forces the Senate to find sixty votes, which means finding people who may otherwise disagree with you.

3. The Electoral College forces a winner to assemble support across regions instead of running up votes in a handful of cities.

4. Fixed state lines mean nobody redraws the Senate to suit himself.

Every one of them exists for a single purpose: to make it difficult for fifty-one percent to impose its will on the forty-nine.

That is not a construction defect. That is the design.

A pure democracy provides no appeal. The body that decides is the body that reviews, so nothing can tell a majority it was wrong except a later majority, and only if there is time.

In 427 BC, the Athenian assembly voted to execute every adult male on Mytilene. After another discussion and vote, they reversed themselves the next morning and sent a second ship rowing to overtake the first. Fortunately, it arrived in time. Nothing in the political system produced that reversal except a magnificent speech and better weather.

James Madison ran this experiment in his head in 1787.

In Federalist 10, he set a republic against a pure democracy, where the majority is the only authority, and concluded that democracies had been violent and hostile to personal security and the rights of property.

Pure Athenian majority rule is not a safeguard.

It is the system that safeguards are built to restrain.

What Scripture Gives You, and What It Doesn’t

Scripture does not prescribe an economic system.

What Scripture gives you instead is a set of non-negotiable ends and a doctrine of man that eliminates most of the mechanisms.

The ends are not optional. Deuteronomy 15:11 commands an open hand to the poor. James 5:4 condemns wages withheld by fraud. Galatians 2:10 shows Paul eager to remember the poor. A Christianity indifferent to poverty is not Christianity.

The doctrine of man does the heavy lifting. Jeremiah 17:9 says the heart is “deceitful above all things, and desperately sick.” That’s why no concentration of power is reliable. Not in a boardroom. Nor in an agency.

Separation of powers is applied hamartiology. Hamartiology is the doctrine of sin; the Constitution is that doctrine turned into architecture. Madison did not distrust government because he had read Adam Smith.He was suspicious of it, as he understood human nature well enough to create a government designed to restrain the worst aspects of people.

Socialism’s fatal flaw is anthropological. It requires authorities who are not what Jeremiah says they are.

The Kingdom That Works

Scripture describes a government that works. A literal future reign on this earth, with Christ Himself on the throne. Revelation 20:6 measures it at a thousand years.

Everything socialism promises, that Kingdom will deliver.

Central authority. Perfect distribution. The poor cared for. Isaiah 11:4 says He will judge the poor in righteousness and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.

Only with an incorruptible, all-knowing Ruler who judges instantly and perfectly can absolute rule be truly safe.

Only one King will meet those conditions. No human government ever will.

Socialism is a counterfeit of that Kingdom. It promises the throne without the King.

In contrast, a republic makes a different gamble. Not that it will produce good rulers; it will not. But that it will invariably get bad ones and must be constructed to survive them.

Divided power. Staggered terms. A written text that changes slowly and on purpose.

That’s what the four proposals dismantle. They remove the only protection available to people who do not yet have a sinless King.

Where That Leaves Us

Government is not the enemy.

Government is God’s ordering, not man’s accident.

Christians must submit to it, fund it, and pray for it, and Paul commanded all three while living under the rule of Nero.

• Submit: Romans 13:1, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities.”

• Fund: Romans 13:7, “taxes to whom taxes are owed.”

• Pray: 1 Timothy 2:1–2, that supplications be made “for kings and all who are in high positions.”

The forty-year-old renter is not wrong to think that something is broken.

He is wrong about what will fix it. Even if the republic has failed to deliver for him; tearing it down will not make it deliver. It is the only thing standing between him and a majority that owes him nothing.

The World Economic Forum calls it “global governance.” The United Nations calls it “sustainable development.” The vocabulary keeps getting softer. The blueprint is the same.

“Let us make a name for ourselves” (Genesis 11:4).

Same pride. Same arrogance. Same God watching over it all.

By globalism, I don’t mean commerce or cooperation between nations. I mean the belief that the solution to the problems of humanity is erasing God’s boundaries, because those boundaries are the obstacle to consolidating their authority.

What Babel Actually Was

Most people read Babel as a story about human overconfidence. Look at what God actually says about it.

After the flood, God gave Noah and his descendants a specific commandment: populate the Earth (Genesis 9:1). Babel wasn’t just a display of pride. It was open defiance of God’s commandment. Instead of spreading, they gathered. Instead of populating the Earth, they created a city. They were building a monument to their own unity in defiance of the God who had instructed them to scatter.

Genesis 11:4: “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

They wanted the glory that belongs to God alone. And they desired to keep it forever.

Genesis 11:6: “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will be impossible for them.”

That’s not a praise. It was an analysis. A unified society rebelling against God is the most dangerous structure that ever existed.

So He used their own stated fear as His instrument of judgment. The Hebrew פּוּץ (puwts, to disperse) appears in verse 4 as the one outcome the tower was built to prevent: “lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” It returns in verse 8 with God as the subject.

Genesis 11:8: “So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.”

Same word. They said it as a concern. God said it as a verdict.

Nations Are Not An Accident

The scattering at Babel was not disorder. It was God’s design.

Watch what God does next. The builders say “let us make a name for ourselves.” One chapter later God says to Abram, “I will make your name great” (Genesis 12:2).

Same noun. The sin was never calling for a name; it was a self-made one. And God’s answer to the tower is not another tower. It is one man, sent out. From that man a nation, from that nation a Savior, and from that Savior a kingdom.

Babel wanted a name in one generation. God took centuries, and He routed the lineage straight through Babylon (Matthew 1:17).

Acts 17:26–27: “And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him.”

God established the boundaries. God set the times. And He gave a reason: so that men would seek Him.

Nations are not the consequence of His judgment. They are the foundations of His design.

Globalism is not transcending this design. It’s a rebellion against it.

Every institution that seeks to dissolve national boundaries, consolidate global authority, and manage humanity from a centralized structure is not solving a problem.

They are foolishly repeating one.

The World’s Leaders Know Exactly What They Are Building

Scripture does not drop the name. The city in Genesis becomes the empire in Daniel and the system in Revelation. Babel never died; it incorporated.

Psalm 2:1–4 reads like a current events briefing written three thousand years early:

“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed... He who sits in the heavens laughs.”

That laughter is not amusement. It is the certainty of a God who has already seen the end of every tower ever attempted.

Davos. Geneva. New York. Brussels. The venue changes. The agenda doesn’t: central control, managed populations, one system of authority over all people, all resources, and all information.

The Apostle John saw Babel completed. It runs three and one-half years (Revelation 13:5), and its reach is universal. John names the reach of the Antichrist's rule.

"And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation." (Revelation 13:7).

One government. One economy. One system of total control. It all comes down to power.

Then it collapses.

God’s Version Of Unity

God is not against unity. He is against unity that excludes Him.

Zephaniah 3:9 is one of the most overlooked verses in prophetic Scripture:

“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD and serve Him with one accord.”

One language. One people. One name. That’s divine unity.

But the name is His, not theirs.

The answer to Babel is not globalism. It is the Kingdom of God.

“The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed...it shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever” (Daniel 2:44).

Every other tower falls. This tower doesn’t.

What The Church Must Do

The church is not called to political revolution. It is called to prophetic witness.

It has three responsibilities:

1. Name the spirit. Babel was not a construction project; it was a spiritual attitude: humanity asserting autonomy from God. Every attempt deserves the same name. The church that cannot name it is not being diplomatic. It is being unfaithful.

2. Refuse the confusion. The name itself is the verdict. Genesis 11:9: “Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth.” Every system that promises coherence apart from God delivers the opposite. It will always promise more than it can deliver and demand more than it has a right to take. Philippians 3:20 answers it in five words: “Our citizenship is in heaven.” That is not a bumper sticker. It is an oath of allegiance sworn to another King.

3. Stay on mission. God scattered humanity at Babel. He sent His church back into the scatter with a commission: make disciples of all nations, preach the gospel in every language, teach everything Christ commanded. The scattering made the nations. Christ sent His church to claim every one of them.

The builders are still building. They will not stop until the Builder of all things stops them.

He will. And it will take Him one hour.

Revelation 18:10: “For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

God did not hang a ribbon in the sky. He actually hung a weapon.

The word for rainbow in Genesis 9:13 is qeshet. It is the ordinary Hebrew word for a warrior’s battle bow; the same word Scripture uses for weapons of war. God did not invent a symbol. He hung up an instrument of judgment.

And He hung it where He would see it. The covenant sign is not given to comfort us; it is given to God as a memorandum, as He stated in Genesis 9:14–16:

“When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember My covenant that is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it..”

Notice: ‘I bring.’ ‘I will remember.’ ‘I will see.’ The bow hangs in God’s line of sight. We look up and feel reassured; God looks down and recalls the terms.

And the terms are precise, as confirmed in Genesis 9:11:

“I establish My covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

The promise is bounded by six words: by the waters of the flood. God did not promise that the world would never again be destroyed. He promised it would never again be drowned.

Scoffers and Mockers

Nevertheless, every generation has its mockers, and they all sing the same song. “Nothing ever changes. All things remain the same.”

Peter saw it coming in 2 Peter 3:3–4:

“Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.’”

Peter heard it in the first century. We hear it now with a scientific rhythm.

The notion even has a modern name — Uniformitarianism, the proposition that present processes, operating at present rates, explain everything. No interruptions. No interventions.

The present is the key to the past, and the past is the guarantee of the future. It is the working assumption of secular geology, the scaffolding under deep time, and the unspoken faith of every man who lives as though tomorrow is contractually obligated to look like today.

But notice what Peter names first. Not their evidence but their desires. The scoffing is downstream of their cravings.

The doctrine is not a conclusion; it is a convenience. If nothing ever changes, no judgment takes place. And if no judgment is coming, no one has to answer for anything. The ideology protects the appetite.

Paul states the same philosophy in 1 Corinthians 15:32:

“If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.’”

That is the scoffer’s ideology abridged. Remove the judgment, and the cravings are all that remains.

What They Deliberately Forget

Peter, however, does not treat this as innocent bewilderment. He treats it as a chosen blindness.

Here’s his charge in 2 Peter 3:5-6:

For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.

The Greek for “deliberately overlook” is pointed: θέλοντας (thelontas — willing, of their own choice). The fact doesn’t just slip their minds. They push it aside. They are not forgetful; they are willful.

And here is the fact they bury: water.

God formed the earth “out of water and through water.” Then God took that same water and turned it into the medium of His judgment.

The very element He used to build the world, He used to drown it.

Apparently, all things did not continue. The fountains of the deep burst open, the heavens emptied, and the world that then existed perished in a single catastrophic event by the word of God known as the Flood.

Uniformitarianism drowned in Noah’s day.

John MacArthur argued for decades that the global Flood is precisely the fact modern skepticism must deny to survive. Bury the Flood, and you can pretend the world is safe. Face it, and the dogma collapses.

The End Time Destruction Is Already Locked and Loaded

Now Peter turns from the past judgment to the pending one, and the parallel should raise the hair on your neck.

He foresees in 2 Peter 3:7:

“But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”

“Stored up” is θησαυρίζω (thēsaurizō — to treasure up, to stockpile in reserve).

The present world is not drifting toward some accidental end. It is being deliberately held back, stockpiled for blazing destruction, and kept under guard until an appointed day.

Look at where we live.

Beneath the crust, beneath the mantle, sits a core of molten iron hotter than anything on the surface of this planet. And above our heads burns a ball of nuclear fire that holds the earth in orbit.

Fire below; fire above.

Scripture does not name the mechanism. The point is simpler and heavier. God never needed to bring a weapon into the world to destroy it; He built the world with the means of its own downfall already inside it.

He drowned it with the water it was made from.

He will burn it with fire, likewise reserved for the task.

Nothing Continues Unchanged

So the scoffer is wrong, and he is wrong twice. Water proved it once. Fire will prove it again.

Everything does not continue as it was. The end of the world is not a possibility God is weighing; it is a sentence He has already passed and is holding only for the right time.

The fire is laid. The day is fixed.

The timing is withheld, and that only because He is patient, not because He is unsure.

The world changed once, catastrophically, by water. It will change again, this time by fire.

Nothing continues under its own power. Everything is upheld by the word of His power.

• Stop banking on tomorrow resembling today, as Noah’s neighbors did.

• Stop reading God’s patience as God’s absence.

• Flee to Christ before the match is struck.

Peter informs us why the delay exists, noting in 2 Peter 3:9:

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

Historically, the last man to say “all things continue as they were” said it in the rain.

But it’s not what the Bible promises.

The Problem With “Going to Heaven”

When a believer dies, they go to be with Christ. That part is true. Paul says it plainly in Philippians 1:23: “My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.”

Real. True. Comforting. But not well understood.

What Paul describes is the intermediate state: a conscious, personal existence with Christ between death and resurrection. R.C. Sproul called it what it is: a temporary condition. The soul is with the Lord; the body is still in the ground. That separation was never the design. It is the lingering wound of a fallen world not yet healed.

Heaven is the waiting room. It’s not our ultimate home.

Resurrection, Not Clouds

The empty tomb is not a metaphor. It is the prototype. The resurrection body is physical, glorified, and permanent — the same person, transformed, not a ghost. And it comes at a fixed moment: the Rapture. Paul marks it in 1 Thessalonians 4:16: “And the dead in Christ will rise first.” That is when soul and body are reunited, the wound of death is finally closed.

That body is built to last forever (the New Earth arrives after the thousand-year reign). And forever has an address.

What the New Earth Actually Is

Start with one word: “new.” English flattens it. Greek does not. John writes καινός (kainos: new in kind and quality, not merely new in time). The New Earth is not a replacement world conjured from nothing. It is this creation, purged by fire, restored, and glorified. The same earth, freed at last from the curse.

Isaiah saw it coming (Isaiah 65:17). Peter names the defining feature in 2 Peter 3:13: “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Righteousness dwells there. Permanently.

This is Eden’s purpose, recovered. Creation was never meant to be thrown away; it was meant to be filled with the glory of God and inhabited by His redeemed people. The fall interrupted the plan. The New Earth completes it.

John adds one jarring detail in Revelation 21:1: “and the sea was no more.” In the ancient mind the sea meant chaos and separation. Its absence is the end of chaos itself. Nothing left that threatens. Nothing left that divides.

The City That Comes Down

Then John sees a city, and the popular picture collapses. He records it in Revelation 21:2: “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”

Watch the direction. The city comes down. The redeemed do not escape upward to God; God brings His dwelling down to them. “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man” (Revelation 21:3). That word is σκηνή (skēnē: tent, tabernacle), the same root behind the Word made flesh, who tabernacled among us. What began at the incarnation becomes permanent.

Then the dimensions preach. The city is a perfect cube; its length and width and height are equal, roughly 1,500 miles on every side. Only one room in all of Scripture was a perfect cube: the Holy of Holies, where God’s presence sat behind the veil. Now the entire city is the Most Holy Place. Everyone inside lives where only the high priest could step, once a year, trembling.

And the curse is gone. Then the thing no one in history survived: “They will see His face” (Revelation 22:4). Moses asked for that and was refused. On the New Earth, the redeemed are given it.

A Place of Perfect Joy

The face of God is not only a sight. It is a fountain.

Every joy we know here is diluted, cut with grief, disappointment and worry. Life opens with the joy of new birth and closes in the sorrow of death and separation. An honest look at this world yields more tears than gladness.

Heaven ends that forever. To the faithful steward Jesus says in Matthew 25:23: “Enter into the joy of your master.” Not stand near the joy. Enter it. And that joy is not vague contentment; it flows from one source, the unveiled presence of God Himself. Every earthly joy is a borrowed beam. There the redeemed stand in the light itself.

Hell Is Also Intermediate

The same logic runs the other way, and it should make us tremble. The unbeliever who dies today does not go to the lake of fire. He goes to Hades: conscious torment, awaiting judgment. The rich man in Luke 16 is not at a party. He is in anguish, fully awake, fully aware of what he threw away.

That is the waiting room of the damned. The final sentence is worse. “He was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). A resurrected body. Eternal, conscious punishment. Not annihilation. Not symbolic. The full weight of God’s wrath, forever.

Why This Changes Everything

If the present heaven is intermediate, the Christian hope is far bigger than escaping death. It is creation healed, bodies raised, and God present with no veil between them. If hell is intermediate, the final judgment is more terrifying than most pulpits dare to say.

The gospel answers both. Christ was raised so you also would be. He bore the Father’s wrath so you would not. He has secured a place for His people on a redeemed earth, in a city that comes down, under the unveiled face of God.

That is what salvation actually is.

Not clouds. A new world. And the God who made you, dwelling there, with you, forever.

“She had a heart of gold.” “He was a good man; one of the best.” Nobody stands up and says the deceased was a sinner now in the hands of an angry God.

We bury everyone as a good person, and apparently, they all go to heaven.

As it turns out, the church believes this too. Fifty-three percent of American evangelicals agree that “everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature.”

That’s not a secular poll. That’s the 2025 Ligonier State of Theology survey. Churchgoing, Bible-claiming Christians; a majority of them.

They have never believed in total depravity, but that’s exactly what the Bible teaches.

The Most Comfortable Lie

The “basically good person” is the central figure of American religion. You know the type. Generous. Reliable. Kind to strangers. Coaches Little League. Misses church, but after all, Sundays are busy.

We call these people good. We mean it. When they die, we say it at their funerals.

Nobody in the pews questions it.

I didn’t either — for a long time. My mother was one of those people. Sweet, giving, genuinely kind. She would have given a stranger the coat off her back. And she had no idea — none — what the gospel actually required of her.

I loved her. I still do. That’s not the point.

The “good person” theology is the most dangerous kind of theology: it feels true, it sounds humble, but it is lethal.

What Scripture Actually Says

Ephesians 2:1–3 does not say people are mostly decent with a few rough edges. It says this:

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience — among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”

The Greek word translated “dead” is νεκροὺς (nekrous). It is the word for a corpse. Paul does not say that we were ill. He does not say we were declining or weakening. He says we were dead; no capacity to revive ourselves, no appetite for God, no ability to respond to grace on our own.

Then there is the word φύσει (phusei), translated “by nature.” We were not children of wrath because of our environment, our upbringing, or the circumstances we fell into. By nature. Intrinsically. From the inside out.

This is not pessimism. It’s a diagnosis.

What Total Depravity Actually Means

R.C. Sproul was precise: “We are not sinners because we sin. We sin because we are sinners.”

That single sentence overturns fifty years of evangelical anthropology.

Total depravity is not a claim that every person is as wicked as possible. MacArthur explains it this way: total depravity means sinners have no ability to do spiritual good or to work for their own salvation. The kind grandmother who has harmed no one, who is generous and faithful to every human relationship, may still be utterly unable to seek God, unable to respond to the gospel, and unable to even see her own condition.

That is the horror of it. The most spiritually dangerous people are not murderers. They are pleasant, reliable, morally upright people who see no need for a Savior.

My mother was pleasant, reliable, and morally upright.

Jeremiah 17:9 says it without softening: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Who can understand it? Not even the patient knows the disease.

Why the Church Keeps Flinching?

MacArthur has noted that no doctrine draws more hostility — not just from unbelievers, but from professing Christians who find it offensive and attack it zealously.

The reason is not difficult to find. Total depravity costs you the one currency American religion runs on: human dignity measured by moral performance.

If people are basically good, then salvation is simply a refinement. You start decent; grace makes you excellent. The cross is an upgrade.

If total depravity is true, the cross is rescue from a grave. Not an upgrade. Resurrection.

These are not two versions of the same gospel. They are two different gospels.

The 53% are not confused about a minor doctrinal nuance. They are confused about what they are being saved from.

Where This Lands on Monday Morning

When you look at someone you love; someone generous, kind, and thoroughly unregenerate, and say “she’s a good person,” you are not being gracious. You are being dangerous.

You are telling yourself a story that removes urgency. If she is basically good, God will sort it out. And since she’s basically good, the conversation can wait. Obviously, what’s the crisis?

Romans 3:10–12 says: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

No one seeks God. The pleasant person with no interest in Christ is not slowly drifting toward Him. She is, apart from regenerating grace, moving further away.

This is not a reason for despair. It is a reason to pray differently.

Stop Calling People Good

Stop calling the unregenerate “good people.” Start calling them what Scripture calls them: dead in trespasses, children of wrath by nature, in need of the same regenerating grace you received.

Then pray for it.

Not “Lord, bless her.” Pray for regeneration. Pray for the Spirit to do what only the Spirit can do: make the dead live.

That is what it means to believe in total depravity. It’s not a doctrine sitting in a catechism. It’s a way of seeing everyone around you with clarity about their condition and urgency about their need.

My mother needed regeneration.

So did I.

So do you.

Joel Osteen — Colossians 3:2 Run Backwards

“Set your mind on things above, not on things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2)

That second clause is the point. Paul’s entire argument is the rejection of earthly, material priorities in favor of the eternal. This is one of the most explicitly anti-prosperity verses in the New Testament.

In Your Best Life Now, Osteen writes: “Set your mind and keep it set on the higher things.” He dropped the second half entirely. “Not on things that are on earth” simply disappears.

Then he applies “higher things” to mean bigger ambitions and greater earthly success.

He took a verse commanding the reader to stop fixating on earthly increase and deployed it to command fixation on earthly increase. This was not a reading error. The verse was reversed.

Joel Osteen — John 10:10 and the Abundant Life

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

The Greek word rendered “abundantly” is περισσόν (perisson): exceeding, overflowing, beyond the ordinary. In context, Jesus is contrasting His purpose with that of the thief who comes to steal and destroy. The abundance is eternal life in union with God.

Osteen applies it to material wealth, health, and financial blessing. The text says nothing about income or career advancement.

Prosperity teachers quote, “I came” and stop before the context complicates the pitch.

Jeremiah 29:11 — The Universal Misquote

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

God is writing to Jewish exiles in Babylon. He has just told them in verses 5–7 to settle in; they are staying for seventy years (Jeremiah 29:10). This is a national covenant to ethnic Israel about physical return from exile, conditioned on repentance.

Osteen, Joyce Meyer, and virtually every prosperity teacher deploy it as a personal guarantee of financial blessing for any believer at any moment. It has appeared on graduation cards, coffee mugs, and stadium Jumbotrons.

The verse is not wrong. The application is fraudulent.

Kenneth and Gloria Copeland — Mark 10:29–30 and the Hundredfold Return

In God’s Will Is Prosperity, Gloria Copeland writes:

“Give $10 and receive $1,000; give $1,000 and receive $100,000… In short, Mark 10:30 is a very good deal.”

Three things the Copelands extracted and discarded:

• The condition: abandonment for the sake of Christ, not as an investment strategy

• The word “persecutions,” which appears in Jesus’ actual list of returns and is never quoted

• The primary return Jesus names: eternal life

They collapsed a passage about the surpassing worth of the Kingdom into a transactional investment scheme. The text became a brokerage prospectus.

Creflo Dollar — James 4:2–3 and the God Who Has No Choice

Dollar writes:

“When we pray, believing that we have already received what we are praying, God has no choice but to make our prayers come to pass.”

He builds on James 4:2: “You do not have, because you do not ask.” He stops there.

James 4:3, the very next sentence: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

Dollar’s framework erases the theological problem James explicitly identifies and turns it into a hack. Fix your confession. Believe harder. God will comply.

“God has no choice” is not a description of prayer. It is a description of a vending machine. That is a different religion dressed in Christian vocabulary.

Kenneth Hagin — Isaiah 53:5 Repackaged as a Medical Policy

“With His wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

The Hebrew word for “healed” is רָפָא (rapha): used throughout the Old Testament for both physical and spiritual restoration. Peter cites the passage in 1 Peter 2:24 and applies it to having “died to sin” and living to righteousness. The healing is moral and spiritual.

Kenneth Hagin, the architect of the Word-Faith movement, taught that physical healing is a present, guaranteed right for every believer. Isaiah 53:5 was his primary text. If you remain sick, your faith is insufficient; you are confessing sickness rather than confessing your healing. Benny Hinn carried the same framework into crusade format across three decades.

This teaching has directly caused people to refuse medical treatment. People have died from it.

Isaiah 53:5 is about atonement. It was never a medical policy.

The Pattern Is Not Accidental

Every entry above follows the same method:

• Find a verse containing a word that sounds favorable

• Lift it from its context

• Apply it to present-day material circumstances

• Attach a financial or physical mechanism to activate it

The result is not a misunderstanding of Scripture. It’s a constructed alternative religion using Scripture’s language while systematically reversing Scripture’s priorities.

2 Timothy 4:3–4 named it in advance:

“The time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth.”

The prosperity gospel has no problem gathering an audience. It finds exactly the audience Paul predicted.

The most dangerous false teacher is not the one who ignores Scripture.

It is the one who knows it well enough to weaponise it.

Learn the text well enough that no one can do that to you.

Politicians reach for it constantly. They cite it at conventions, press conferences, and campaign rallies. They introduce it with phrases like “as the Good Book says” or “Scripture tells us.”

Then they get it wrong. Routinely. Bipartisanly. Spectacularly.

This is not a left-versus-right problem. This is a “nobody ever checked” problem.

The Verse That Never Existed (But Appeared In The Congressional Record 12 Times)

Nancy Pelosi quoted the same verse repeatedly across 16 years.

“To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.”

She deployed it for climate legislation, immigration reform, tsunami relief, and Darfur genocide recognition. It appeared 12 times in the Congressional Record between 2002 and 2018.

Multiple Old Testament scholars confirmed it does not exist anywhere in Scripture. Professor Claude Mariottini of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary called it “fictional.”

Pelosi herself admitted: “I can’t find it in the Bible, but I quote it all the time.”

That is not a misquote. That’s a policy decision.

The closest actual text is Proverbs 14:31:

“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

It is narrower in scope and more demanding in application. Unfortunately, it’s less useful as a political Swiss Army knife.

One Convention, Two Offenses (Clinton, 1992)

Bill Clinton managed two separate biblical distortions in a single acceptance speech.

First, he quoted Proverbs 29:18:

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

The Hebrew word translated “vision” is חָזוֹן (hazon): prophetic revelation from God. It refers to divine communication through a prophet. The verse warns about the consequences of suppressing God’s Word. Clinton used it to argue for his policy agenda. Solomon was not describing five-point economic platforms.

Second, he cited 1 Corinthians 2:9:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Clinton’s version replaced “God has prepared for those who love Him” with “what we can build.” One small substitution. The theological direction reversed completely. The verse is about divine transcendence. Clinton turned it into a construction metaphor.

The Verse That Reversed Its Target (Rubio, 2018)

After Parkland, when students organized for gun legislation, Marco Rubio tweeted Isaiah 3:4–5:

“I will place boys as their princes; the fickle will govern them and the people will oppress one another.”

His implication: young people make poor leaders.

He had the text backwards.

Isaiah 3 is a judgment oracle against established leadership. The young stepping up to fill the vacuum were not the target of God’s rebuke; they were the symptom of failed leadership. The chapter indicts the leaders who failed so completely that children had to rise. The verse rebuked Rubio, not the students.

The Most Quoted Verse That Isn’t in the Bible

“God helps those who help themselves.”

We’ve covered this earlier, but politicians from both parties continue to treat this as Scripture. It appears in sermons, commencement addresses, and campaign speeches. It is referenced more often than almost any other Bible verse.

Benjamin Franklin wrote it. It appeared in Poor Richard’s Almanack in 1736, adapted from a Greek proverb.

The Bible says the opposite.

Romans 5:6: “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Scripture’s entire salvation framework runs in one direction: God helps the helpless. The Franklin proverb is American individualism dressed in biblical language. It is the most theologically inverted misquote in political history; and it’s the most repeated.

The Pattern Behind Every Example

Every case above follows the same architecture.

A real spiritual authority is borrowed. The context is stripped. The text is redeployed in service of a political argument that the original never supported.

The Bible is not a quotation database. It is a unified narrative of redemption with specific covenants, for specific audiences, and with specific applications. Pulling a verse without its context is not quoting Scripture.

It is using Scripture’s credibility to authorize something Scripture never said.

And the offense is not that politicians misuse the Bible.

The real offense is that no one in the room notices.

Then the defense speaks.

Now…you’re not so sure.

That may be exactly where you’ll sit with the doctrine of saving faith.

Has it been corrupted by adding something to it, or gutted by stripping something away?

Your verdict will shape how you approach evangelism, discipleship, and the assurance you offer to everyone you lead.

Both positions below are argued by godly men with noble purposes. But, both can’t be right.

You must decide.

Faith Takes the Stand

Most Christians can recite Hebrews 11:1. Few have comprehended what it actually means.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Three Greek words bear the full force of that verse. Each one carries more than our English translation delivers.

Faith: πίστις (pistis)

The word translated “faith” is pistis: to persuade, to convince. It is not a vague religious feeling. It is a settled persuasion with moral gravity. The question the text immediately forces is this: persuaded of what, and to what degree?

Assurance: ὑπόστασις (hupostasis)

Hupostasis means substance, foundation, weight. Hebrews uses the same word in 1:3 to describe the Son as the very essence of God. That is the force behind “assurance.”

Faith is not wishful longing. It is firm ground beneath the feet of one waiting for a promise they have not yet received.

Moses demonstrates it in Hebrews 11:26: “he considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt.” He released what he could hold now for a promise he could not see, because the promise carried more substance than the wealth of today.

Conviction: ἔλεγχος (elegchos)

Elegchos means proof, evidence, the kind of conviction that moves a man. It is not what a man says he believes. It is what he does when the trials arrive.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked into the furnace. The king they could see commanded them to bow. The God they could not see said otherwise.

Elegchos is what separated their response from everyone else who bowed to the king.

The Question the Text Raises

Pistis, hupostasis, elegchos. Persuasion, substance, proof.

The Greek does not permit a thin definition of faith. Hebrews 11:1 does not stand alone in demanding that.

Paul walks “by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Abraham holds a promise against all visible evidence, “fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20–21). Peter’s readers love and trust a Christ they have never laid eyes on, yet “rejoice with joy that is inexpressible” (1 Peter 1:8).

In each case faith is active, object-directed, and anchored in something more substantial than feelings.

Whether that standard demands more than genuine persuasion, or whether genuine persuasion is precisely what all three words describe, is the dispute this court has been convened to address.

Both attorneys are prepared to argue it. The evidence is the same. The conclusions are not.

The Free Grace Response

Brother, your concern for shallow professions is shared. But the cure risks worse damage than the disease.

Charles Ryrie, in So Great Salvation, holds the one distinction that holds Free Grace theology together: the offer of the gospel and the call to discipleship are not the same call. Salvation is a gift. Discipleship is a cost. Confuse the two, and you destroy both.

When Paul writes “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” in Romans 6:23, the word is charisma. A gift demanded back is not a gift.

When John 3:16 says “whoever believes,” the verb pisteuō means to be persuaded that something is true. Adding commitment, surrender, or sustained obedience to the content of saving faith does not deepen the gospel; it relocates the anchor from Christ’s finished work to the believer’s ongoing performance.

That relocation has consequences. When assurance depends on the quality of a man’s obedience rather than the certainty of God’s promise, the gospel ceases to be good news. It becomes a contract with moving terms. Paul settled this in Romans 4:5: “to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.” The ground of justification is belief, not behavior. The object of faith is Christ, not the believer’s own transformed life.

John 3:16 does not say “whoever believes and demonstrates sufficient fruit has eternal life.” The promise is unconditional. John 5:24 removes any remaining ambiguity: “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

Past tense. Settled. Rendered at the moment of belief; not held pending a review of subsequent obedience.

Attach fruit inspection to assurance, and you have moved the foundation. The promise becomes provisional. The gospel stops being an announcement and becomes an audit.

Free Grace does not require fruit as evidence of salvation. A man who has trusted Christ for eternal life has eternal life.

The Lordship Salvation Reply

Charles Ryrie was not wrong to defend the freeness of grace. He was wrong about the content of the faith that receives it.

MacArthur, in The Gospel According to Jesus, made the case that Free Grace did not preserve the gospel; it amputated it. Consider the word James uses for “believe” in James 2:19: πιστεύουσιν (pisteuousin), the present active indicative of πιστεύω (pisteuō), the identical root as πίστις (pistis) defined in Hebrews 11:1. James does not reach for a lesser word. He uses the same word. His point is devastating: “Even the demons believe — and shudder!”

Reformed theologians have long identified three components of saving faith: notitia: knowledge of the truth; assensus: agreement with it, and fiducia: personal trust and surrender to the One who is the truth. The demons possess the first two in full. They know exactly who God is. They agree with every word of it. What they lack entirely is fiducia, the personal surrender that constitutes saving trust. They shudder precisely because they know the truth and want nothing to do with God on His terms. The root word alone does not save. Its object, its depth, and its fruit are what distinguish the faith of the redeemed from the orthodoxy of demons.

Scripture forces the test. James 2:17 says faith without works is dead. Not weak. Dead. Matthew 7:21–23 records Jesus rejecting professed believers who called Him Lord but never did the Father’s will. He does not call them backslidden. He says, “I never knew you.” They were never saved.

The charge that Lordship Salvation adds works to faith misreads the argument entirely. Ephesians 2:8–10 makes both points in three verses. Salvation is by grace through faith, not of works. And yet the saved man is “created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.” The works are not the ladder into salvation. They are evidence that you are already saved. Obedience is not additive. It is diagnostic.

Saving faith is repentant trust. The Lordship position does not redefine the gospel. It refuses to accept a version of it that Scripture does not recognize.

Jury Instructions

Members of the jury, you have heard two closing arguments. Before you deliberate, the court instructs you as follows:

The question is not which attorney argued more persuasively. The question is what the evidence establishes.

The Controlling Standard

You are bound by Hebrews 11:1, πίστις (pistis) is not a feeling, a memory, or a decision made under emotional pressure. It is settled conviction with theological weight: hupostasis (substance) and elegchos (proof). Any definition of faith that falls short of those two terms does not meet the legal standard.

Weighing the Evidence

Both sides agree on the Greek root. What they dispute is its sufficient content.

The Free Grace position holds that pisteuō, genuine persuasion that Jesus is who He claimed, constitutes saving faith in full. The Lordship position holds that saving faith requires fiducia: personal surrender to Christ as Lord, as evidenced by repentance and fruit.

James 2:19 is the contested exhibit. Both attorneys have addressed it. The force you assign it is yours to determine.

The Verdict

A finding of “undecided” is not available. Either fiducia is indispensable to saving trust, or assensus alone suffices. You must choose.

The court’s final instruction is this: do not treat the question lightly. Faith (pistis), assurance (hupostasis), and conviction (elegchos) are not casual terms. What they demand of saving faith is exactly what the evidence before you was assembled to address.

The verdict is yours.

The jury may now retire to deliberate.

You deserve to know where I stand.

I hold the Lordship Salvation position. Works do not produce salvation. They diagnose it. That is not a claim to sinless perfection. Every true believer struggles and falls. The question is the direction of a life, not the stumble. A life bearing no fruit is not a minor concern; it is a warning that demands examination, not comfort.

I also believe that understanding the contrary position is not optional. A conviction you cannot defend is not a conviction; it is a blind preference. Ephesians 4:14 describes what happens without theological grounding: “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.”

Know what you believe. Know why you believe it. Know what the other side argues and why you disagree.

Apply that standard to everything you believe.

Have you ever wondered why the left is the way it is?

You have to wonder when you hear what they claim. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says "you can't earn a billion dollars." Barack Obama told business owners "you didn't build that." Elizabeth Warren insists "there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own." Bernie Sanders wrote an entire book arguing billionaires should not exist. These are not fringe voices. They are the mainstream of one of America's two political parties.

Against the United States. Against free speech. Against capitalism. Against merit and achievement. Against the traditional family. Against religious liberty. Against anyone who builds, earns, or succeeds on their own terms.

We could call it ideology. But it’s far deeper than that.

A secular economist named Joseph Schumpeter identified the root problem in 1942. He was not a Christian. He was not a conservative. He was simply honest enough to follow the argument where it led.

What he found lines up precisely with what Scripture diagnosed centuries earlier.

The Observation

In his book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy (1942), Schumpeter made an observation that has only grown more relevant: capitalism generates a class of intellectuals who depend on the system for their platform and income but have no direct stake in building it.

The entrepreneur risks capital. He succeeds or fails based on whether he serves others well.

The inventor puts years into solving a problem nobody else will touch. The market rewards him only if and when the solution works.

The businessman builds systems that serve customers at scale. His profit margin measures how well he serves them.

The intellectual is above all of that. He profits from capitalism’s infrastructure — its media, universities, and entertainment — while building none of it. And because he does not profit the way the builder profits, Schumpeter argued, he resents it.

Could that be why Hollywood has so many self-canonizing award ceremonies:

the Emmys, the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Grammys, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, the Directors Guild Awards, the Writers Guild Awards, the Producers Guild Awards, the People's Choice Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, the American Music Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, the Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prizes, the National Book Awards, the Nobel Prize for Literature, the MacArthur Genius Grants, and the Guggenheim Fellowships…

An entire calendar of ceremonies where the same class hands trophies to itself. A film can lose millions of dollars and still win Best Picture. The market tells the entrepreneur whether they’ve succeeded. The intellectual class can’t be bothered by that verdict, so it manufactures its own participation trophies.

That resentment, dressed in ideological language, becomes the engine of anti-capitalism.

What Schumpeter Missed

Schumpeter traced it to the paycheck. Scripture traced it to the soul.

He described the intellectual class and its contempt for those who produce as a structural feature of capitalism. But the Bible identifies it as something older and darker than any economic system.

The Greek word for envy is φθόνος (phthonos). Not mere jealousy, which wants what another has. Phthonos wants the other person not to have it also. It is the active wish for another’s undoing.

Its modern incarnation is TDS. The intellectual class did not merely oppose one man. It wants his complete undoing. Schumpeter would not have been surprised.

James 4:2 saw it coming: "You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel."

Schumpeter said capitalism funds the class that will destroy it. The Bible says envy was always the weapon. Capitalism just handed it a microphone.

What Scripture Actually Says About Work

The Bible does not treat work as a necessary evil. It treats it as a calling.

Proverbs 22:29 is not a warm sentiment: “Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings.” The Hebrew word for skillful is מָהִיר (mahir): swift, sharp, practiced. A man who masters his craft and serves others through it does not end up in obscurity. He ends up before kings.

Proverbs 14:23 draws the line harder: “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” Solomon was not interested in the theorist. He was interested in the builder.

The parable of the talents in Matthew 25 makes this explicit in theological terms. The master entrusts capital; τάλαντον (talanton, a weight of silver), to three servants. Two deploy it. One buries it. The master’s response to the one who buried it is not mild disappointment. It is judgment: “You wicked and slothful servant.”

The servant did not steal. He did not misuse what he was given. He simply refused to put it to work. That was enough for the master to call him wicked.

The Bible does not separate stewardship from accountability. Neither did Schumpeter, though he framed it in economic rather than eternal terms.

The Diagnosis Both Got Right

Schumpeter argued that the intellectual class holds enormous cultural power precisely because it controls the narrative: academia, entertainment, journalism, publishing, and the arts. The people who define the terms of the debate do not want answers. Answers end debates. Ended debates end careers.

Paul diagnosed the root two thousand years earlier. Romans 1:22 does not need three paragraphs to make the case: “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.”

Schumpeter saw the class. Paul saw the condition. One wrote an economics treatise. The other wrote the verdict.

Builder or Critic. Pick One.

The contrast Schumpeter drew is the same one Scripture draws; it simply lacks the eternal dimension.

The builder serves his neighbor. The inventor solves his neighbor's problem. The businessman creates systems that serve thousands of neighbors he will never meet. This is not greed. It is the deployment of gifts on behalf of others at a scale that produces genuine material benefit.

The critic produces words about what the builder built. Words have their place. But commentary is not creation and should not command the same reward.

Ask yourself which lane you are in. Are you building something? Inventing something? Creating something that serves others and produces real value? Or are you analyzing those who do?

Jesus did not commission critics. He commissioned builders. The Great Commission is the most ambitious construction project in history, and one with an eternal address.

The Final Balance Sheet

Schumpeter was right. Capitalism produces people who resent producers. But the root is not structural. It’s theological.

Proverbs 14:30 gives the diagnosis in five words: “envy makes the bones rot.”

The economist saw the pattern. The Bible names the poison.

The cure is not a different economic system. It is repentance, vocation, and the willingness to deploy what God gave you in service to others, regardless of whether the intellectuals approve.

Build something. Serve someone. Answer for it before the Master.

That is the only audit that matters.
