Most critics stop at “they took it out of context.”

That’s too generous.

What follows is not a survey of misunderstood passages. It is a documented record of Scripture being systematically inverted; verses whose plain meaning was stripped, discarded, and replaced with the opposite of what they really say.

Every entry names the teacher. Every quote is verified. Take your time reading.

Joel Osteen — Colossians 3:2 Run Backwards

“Set your mind on things above, not on things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2)

That second clause is the point. Paul’s entire argument is the rejection of earthly, material priorities in favor of the eternal. This is one of the most explicitly anti-prosperity verses in the New Testament.

In Your Best Life Now, Osteen writes: “Set your mind and keep it set on the higher things.” He dropped the second half entirely. “Not on things that are on earth” simply disappears.

Then he applies “higher things” to mean bigger ambitions and greater earthly success.

He took a verse commanding the reader to stop fixating on earthly increase and deployed it to command fixation on earthly increase. This was not a reading error. The verse was reversed.

Joel Osteen — John 10:10 and the Abundant Life

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

The Greek word rendered “abundantly” is περισσόν (perisson): exceeding, overflowing, beyond the ordinary. In context, Jesus is contrasting His purpose with that of the thief who comes to steal and destroy. The abundance is eternal life in union with God.

Osteen applies it to material wealth, health, and financial blessing. The text says nothing about income or career advancement.

Prosperity teachers quote, “I came” and stop before the context complicates the pitch.

Jeremiah 29:11 — The Universal Misquote

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

God is writing to Jewish exiles in Babylon. He has just told them in verses 5–7 to settle in; they are staying for seventy years (Jeremiah 29:10). This is a national covenant to ethnic Israel about physical return from exile, conditioned on repentance.

Osteen, Joyce Meyer, and virtually every prosperity teacher deploy it as a personal guarantee of financial blessing for any believer at any moment. It has appeared on graduation cards, coffee mugs, and stadium Jumbotrons.

The verse is not wrong. The application is fraudulent.

Kenneth and Gloria Copeland — Mark 10:29–30 and the Hundredfold Return

In God’s Will Is Prosperity, Gloria Copeland writes:

“Give $10 and receive $1,000; give $1,000 and receive $100,000… In short, Mark 10:30 is a very good deal.”

Three things the Copelands extracted and discarded:

• The condition: abandonment for the sake of Christ, not as an investment strategy

• The word “persecutions,” which appears in Jesus’ actual list of returns and is never quoted

• The primary return Jesus names: eternal life

They collapsed a passage about the surpassing worth of the Kingdom into a transactional investment scheme. The text became a brokerage prospectus.

Creflo Dollar — James 4:2–3 and the God Who Has No Choice

Dollar writes:

“When we pray, believing that we have already received what we are praying, God has no choice but to make our prayers come to pass.”

He builds on James 4:2: “You do not have, because you do not ask.” He stops there.

James 4:3, the very next sentence: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”

Dollar’s framework erases the theological problem James explicitly identifies and turns it into a hack. Fix your confession. Believe harder. God will comply.

“God has no choice” is not a description of prayer. It is a description of a vending machine. That is a different religion dressed in Christian vocabulary.

Kenneth Hagin — Isaiah 53:5 Repackaged as a Medical Policy

“With His wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

The Hebrew word for “healed” is רָפָא (rapha): used throughout the Old Testament for both physical and spiritual restoration. Peter cites the passage in 1 Peter 2:24 and applies it to having “died to sin” and living to righteousness. The healing is moral and spiritual.

Kenneth Hagin, the architect of the Word-Faith movement, taught that physical healing is a present, guaranteed right for every believer. Isaiah 53:5 was his primary text. If you remain sick, your faith is insufficient; you are confessing sickness rather than confessing your healing. Benny Hinn carried the same framework into crusade format across three decades.

This teaching has directly caused people to refuse medical treatment. People have died from it.

Isaiah 53:5 is about atonement. It was never a medical policy.

The Pattern Is Not Accidental

Every entry above follows the same method:

• Find a verse containing a word that sounds favorable

• Lift it from its context

• Apply it to present-day material circumstances

• Attach a financial or physical mechanism to activate it

The result is not a misunderstanding of Scripture. It’s a constructed alternative religion using Scripture’s language while systematically reversing Scripture’s priorities.

2 Timothy 4:3–4 named it in advance:

“The time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth.”

The prosperity gospel has no problem gathering an audience. It finds exactly the audience Paul predicted.

The most dangerous false teacher is not the one who ignores Scripture.

It is the one who knows it well enough to weaponise it.

Learn the text well enough that no one can do that to you.

Politicians reach for it constantly. They cite it at conventions, press conferences, and campaign rallies. They introduce it with phrases like “as the Good Book says” or “Scripture tells us.”

Then they get it wrong. Routinely. Bipartisanly. Spectacularly.

This is not a left-versus-right problem. This is a “nobody ever checked” problem.

The Verse That Never Existed (But Appeared In The Congressional Record 12 Times)

Nancy Pelosi quoted the same verse repeatedly across 16 years.

“To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.”

She deployed it for climate legislation, immigration reform, tsunami relief, and Darfur genocide recognition. It appeared 12 times in the Congressional Record between 2002 and 2018.

Multiple Old Testament scholars confirmed it does not exist anywhere in Scripture. Professor Claude Mariottini of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary called it “fictional.”

Pelosi herself admitted: “I can’t find it in the Bible, but I quote it all the time.”

That is not a misquote. That’s a policy decision.

The closest actual text is Proverbs 14:31:

“Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

It is narrower in scope and more demanding in application. Unfortunately, it’s less useful as a political Swiss Army knife.

One Convention, Two Offenses (Clinton, 1992)

Bill Clinton managed two separate biblical distortions in a single acceptance speech.

First, he quoted Proverbs 29:18:

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

The Hebrew word translated “vision” is חָזוֹן (hazon): prophetic revelation from God. It refers to divine communication through a prophet. The verse warns about the consequences of suppressing God’s Word. Clinton used it to argue for his policy agenda. Solomon was not describing five-point economic platforms.

Second, he cited 1 Corinthians 2:9:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

Clinton’s version replaced “God has prepared for those who love Him” with “what we can build.” One small substitution. The theological direction reversed completely. The verse is about divine transcendence. Clinton turned it into a construction metaphor.

The Verse That Reversed Its Target (Rubio, 2018)

After Parkland, when students organized for gun legislation, Marco Rubio tweeted Isaiah 3:4–5:

“I will place boys as their princes; the fickle will govern them and the people will oppress one another.”

His implication: young people make poor leaders.

He had the text backwards.

Isaiah 3 is a judgment oracle against established leadership. The young stepping up to fill the vacuum were not the target of God’s rebuke; they were the symptom of failed leadership. The chapter indicts the leaders who failed so completely that children had to rise. The verse rebuked Rubio, not the students.

The Most Quoted Verse That Isn’t in the Bible

“God helps those who help themselves.”

We’ve covered this earlier, but politicians from both parties continue to treat this as Scripture. It appears in sermons, commencement addresses, and campaign speeches. It is referenced more often than almost any other Bible verse.

Benjamin Franklin wrote it. It appeared in Poor Richard’s Almanack in 1736, adapted from a Greek proverb.

The Bible says the opposite.

Romans 5:6: “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Scripture’s entire salvation framework runs in one direction: God helps the helpless. The Franklin proverb is American individualism dressed in biblical language. It is the most theologically inverted misquote in political history; and it’s the most repeated.

The Pattern Behind Every Example

Every case above follows the same architecture.

A real spiritual authority is borrowed. The context is stripped. The text is redeployed in service of a political argument that the original never supported.

The Bible is not a quotation database. It is a unified narrative of redemption with specific covenants, for specific audiences, and with specific applications. Pulling a verse without its context is not quoting Scripture.

It is using Scripture’s credibility to authorize something Scripture never said.

And the offense is not that politicians misuse the Bible.

The real offense is that no one in the room notices.

Your verdict will shape how you approach evangelism, discipleship, and the assurance you offer to everyone you lead.

Both positions below are argued by godly men with noble purposes. But, both can’t be right.

You must decide.

Faith Takes the Stand

Most Christians can recite Hebrews 11:1. Few have comprehended what it actually means.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Three Greek words bear the full force of that verse. Each one carries more than our English translation delivers.

Faith: πίστις (pistis)

The word translated “faith” is pistis: to persuade, to convince. It is not a vague religious feeling. It is a settled persuasion with moral gravity. The question the text immediately forces is this: persuaded of what, and to what degree?

Assurance: ὑπόστασις (hupostasis)

Hupostasis means substance, foundation, weight. Hebrews uses the same word in 1:3 to describe the Son as the very essence of God. That is the force behind “assurance.”

Faith is not wishful longing. It is firm ground beneath the feet of one waiting for a promise they have not yet received.

Moses demonstrates it in Hebrews 11:26: “he considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt.” He released what he could hold now for a promise he could not see, because the promise carried more substance than the wealth of today.

Conviction: ἔλεγχος (elegchos)

Elegchos means proof, evidence, the kind of conviction that moves a man. It is not what a man says he believes. It is what he does when the trials arrive.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked into the furnace. The king they could see commanded them to bow. The God they could not see said otherwise.

Elegchos is what separated their response from everyone else who bowed to the king.

The Question the Text Raises

Pistis, hupostasis, elegchos. Persuasion, substance, proof.

The Greek does not permit a thin definition of faith. Hebrews 11:1 does not stand alone in demanding that.

Paul walks “by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Abraham holds a promise against all visible evidence, “fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised” (Romans 4:20–21). Peter’s readers love and trust a Christ they have never laid eyes on, yet “rejoice with joy that is inexpressible” (1 Peter 1:8).

In each case faith is active, object-directed, and anchored in something more substantial than feelings.

Whether that standard demands more than genuine persuasion, or whether genuine persuasion is precisely what all three words describe, is the dispute this court has been convened to address.

Both attorneys are prepared to argue it. The evidence is the same. The conclusions are not.

The Free Grace Response

Brother, your concern for shallow professions is shared. But the cure risks worse damage than the disease.

Charles Ryrie, in So Great Salvation, holds the one distinction that holds Free Grace theology together: the offer of the gospel and the call to discipleship are not the same call. Salvation is a gift. Discipleship is a cost. Confuse the two, and you destroy both.

When Paul writes “the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” in Romans 6:23, the word is charisma. A gift demanded back is not a gift.

When John 3:16 says “whoever believes,” the verb pisteuō means to be persuaded that something is true. Adding commitment, surrender, or sustained obedience to the content of saving faith does not deepen the gospel; it relocates the anchor from Christ’s finished work to the believer’s ongoing performance.

That relocation has consequences. When assurance depends on the quality of a man’s obedience rather than the certainty of God’s promise, the gospel ceases to be good news. It becomes a contract with moving terms. Paul settled this in Romans 4:5: “to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.” The ground of justification is belief, not behavior. The object of faith is Christ, not the believer’s own transformed life.

John 3:16 does not say “whoever believes and demonstrates sufficient fruit has eternal life.” The promise is unconditional. John 5:24 removes any remaining ambiguity: “Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

Past tense. Settled. Rendered at the moment of belief; not held pending a review of subsequent obedience.

Attach fruit inspection to assurance, and you have moved the foundation. The promise becomes provisional. The gospel stops being an announcement and becomes an audit.

Free Grace does not require fruit as evidence of salvation. A man who has trusted Christ for eternal life has eternal life.

The Lordship Salvation Reply

Charles Ryrie was not wrong to defend the freeness of grace. He was wrong about the content of the faith that receives it.

MacArthur, in The Gospel According to Jesus, made the case that Free Grace did not preserve the gospel; it amputated it. Consider the word James uses for “believe” in James 2:19: πιστεύουσιν (pisteuousin), the present active indicative of πιστεύω (pisteuō), the identical root as πίστις (pistis) defined in Hebrews 11:1. James does not reach for a lesser word. He uses the same word. His point is devastating: “Even the demons believe — and shudder!”

Reformed theologians have long identified three components of saving faith: notitia: knowledge of the truth; assensus: agreement with it, and fiducia: personal trust and surrender to the One who is the truth. The demons possess the first two in full. They know exactly who God is. They agree with every word of it. What they lack entirely is fiducia, the personal surrender that constitutes saving trust. They shudder precisely because they know the truth and want nothing to do with God on His terms. The root word alone does not save. Its object, its depth, and its fruit are what distinguish the faith of the redeemed from the orthodoxy of demons.

Scripture forces the test. James 2:17 says faith without works is dead. Not weak. Dead. Matthew 7:21–23 records Jesus rejecting professed believers who called Him Lord but never did the Father’s will. He does not call them backslidden. He says, “I never knew you.” They were never saved.

The charge that Lordship Salvation adds works to faith misreads the argument entirely. Ephesians 2:8–10 makes both points in three verses. Salvation is by grace through faith, not of works. And yet the saved man is “created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.” The works are not the ladder into salvation. They are evidence that you are already saved. Obedience is not additive. It is diagnostic.

Saving faith is repentant trust. The Lordship position does not redefine the gospel. It refuses to accept a version of it that Scripture does not recognize.

Jury Instructions

Members of the jury, you have heard two closing arguments. Before you deliberate, the court instructs you as follows:

The question is not which attorney argued more persuasively. The question is what the evidence establishes.

The Controlling Standard

You are bound by Hebrews 11:1, πίστις (pistis) is not a feeling, a memory, or a decision made under emotional pressure. It is settled conviction with theological weight: hupostasis (substance) and elegchos (proof). Any definition of faith that falls short of those two terms does not meet the legal standard.

Weighing the Evidence

Both sides agree on the Greek root. What they dispute is its sufficient content.

The Free Grace position holds that pisteuō, genuine persuasion that Jesus is who He claimed, constitutes saving faith in full. The Lordship position holds that saving faith requires fiducia: personal surrender to Christ as Lord, as evidenced by repentance and fruit.

James 2:19 is the contested exhibit. Both attorneys have addressed it. The force you assign it is yours to determine.

The Verdict

A finding of “undecided” is not available. Either fiducia is indispensable to saving trust, or assensus alone suffices. You must choose.

The court’s final instruction is this: do not treat the question lightly. Faith (pistis), assurance (hupostasis), and conviction (elegchos) are not casual terms. What they demand of saving faith is exactly what the evidence before you was assembled to address.

The verdict is yours.

The jury may now retire to deliberate.

You deserve to know where I stand.

I hold the Lordship Salvation position. Works do not produce salvation. They diagnose it. That is not a claim to sinless perfection. Every true believer struggles and falls. The question is the direction of a life, not the stumble. A life bearing no fruit is not a minor concern; it is a warning that demands examination, not comfort.

I also believe that understanding the contrary position is not optional. A conviction you cannot defend is not a conviction; it is a blind preference. Ephesians 4:14 describes what happens without theological grounding: “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.”

Know what you believe. Know why you believe it. Know what the other side argues and why you disagree.

Apply that standard to everything you believe.

Have you ever wondered why the left is the way it is?

You have to wonder when you hear what they claim. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says "you can't earn a billion dollars." Barack Obama told business owners "you didn't build that." Elizabeth Warren insists "there is nobody in this country who got rich on his own." Bernie Sanders wrote an entire book arguing billionaires should not exist. These are not fringe voices. They are the mainstream of one of America's two political parties.

Against the United States. Against free speech. Against capitalism. Against merit and achievement. Against the traditional family. Against religious liberty. Against anyone who builds, earns, or succeeds on their own terms.

We could call it ideology. But it’s far deeper than that.

A secular economist named Joseph Schumpeter identified the root problem in 1942. He was not a Christian. He was not a conservative. He was simply honest enough to follow the argument where it led.

What he found lines up precisely with what Scripture diagnosed centuries earlier.

The Observation

In his book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy (1942), Schumpeter made an observation that has only grown more relevant: capitalism generates a class of intellectuals who depend on the system for their platform and income but have no direct stake in building it.

The entrepreneur risks capital. He succeeds or fails based on whether he serves others well.

The inventor puts years into solving a problem nobody else will touch. The market rewards him only if and when the solution works.

The businessman builds systems that serve customers at scale. His profit margin measures how well he serves them.

The intellectual is above all of that. He profits from capitalism’s infrastructure — its media, universities, and entertainment — while building none of it. And because he does not profit the way the builder profits, Schumpeter argued, he resents it.

Could that be why Hollywood has so many self-canonizing award ceremonies:

the Emmys, the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Grammys, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics' Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, the Directors Guild Awards, the Writers Guild Awards, the Producers Guild Awards, the People's Choice Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, the American Music Awards, the Billboard Music Awards, the Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prizes, the National Book Awards, the Nobel Prize for Literature, the MacArthur Genius Grants, and the Guggenheim Fellowships…

An entire calendar of ceremonies where the same class hands trophies to itself. A film can lose millions of dollars and still win Best Picture. The market tells the entrepreneur whether they’ve succeeded. The intellectual class can’t be bothered by that verdict, so it manufactures its own participation trophies.

That resentment, dressed in ideological language, becomes the engine of anti-capitalism.

What Schumpeter Missed

Schumpeter traced it to the paycheck. Scripture traced it to the soul.

He described the intellectual class and its contempt for those who produce as a structural feature of capitalism. But the Bible identifies it as something older and darker than any economic system.

The Greek word for envy is φθόνος (phthonos). Not mere jealousy, which wants what another has. Phthonos wants the other person not to have it also. It is the active wish for another’s undoing.

Its modern incarnation is TDS. The intellectual class did not merely oppose one man. It wants his complete undoing. Schumpeter would not have been surprised.

James 4:2 saw it coming: "You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel."

Schumpeter said capitalism funds the class that will destroy it. The Bible says envy was always the weapon. Capitalism just handed it a microphone.

What Scripture Actually Says About Work

The Bible does not treat work as a necessary evil. It treats it as a calling.

Proverbs 22:29 is not a warm sentiment: “Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings.” The Hebrew word for skillful is מָהִיר (mahir): swift, sharp, practiced. A man who masters his craft and serves others through it does not end up in obscurity. He ends up before kings.

Proverbs 14:23 draws the line harder: “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” Solomon was not interested in the theorist. He was interested in the builder.

The parable of the talents in Matthew 25 makes this explicit in theological terms. The master entrusts capital; τάλαντον (talanton, a weight of silver), to three servants. Two deploy it. One buries it. The master’s response to the one who buried it is not mild disappointment. It is judgment: “You wicked and slothful servant.”

The servant did not steal. He did not misuse what he was given. He simply refused to put it to work. That was enough for the master to call him wicked.

The Bible does not separate stewardship from accountability. Neither did Schumpeter, though he framed it in economic rather than eternal terms.

The Diagnosis Both Got Right

Schumpeter argued that the intellectual class holds enormous cultural power precisely because it controls the narrative: academia, entertainment, journalism, publishing, and the arts. The people who define the terms of the debate do not want answers. Answers end debates. Ended debates end careers.

Paul diagnosed the root two thousand years earlier. Romans 1:22 does not need three paragraphs to make the case: “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.”

Schumpeter saw the class. Paul saw the condition. One wrote an economics treatise. The other wrote the verdict.

Builder or Critic. Pick One.

The contrast Schumpeter drew is the same one Scripture draws; it simply lacks the eternal dimension.

The builder serves his neighbor. The inventor solves his neighbor's problem. The businessman creates systems that serve thousands of neighbors he will never meet. This is not greed. It is the deployment of gifts on behalf of others at a scale that produces genuine material benefit.

The critic produces words about what the builder built. Words have their place. But commentary is not creation and should not command the same reward.

Ask yourself which lane you are in. Are you building something? Inventing something? Creating something that serves others and produces real value? Or are you analyzing those who do?

Jesus did not commission critics. He commissioned builders. The Great Commission is the most ambitious construction project in history, and one with an eternal address.

The Final Balance Sheet

Schumpeter was right. Capitalism produces people who resent producers. But the root is not structural. It’s theological.

Proverbs 14:30 gives the diagnosis in five words: “envy makes the bones rot.”

The economist saw the pattern. The Bible names the poison.

The cure is not a different economic system. It is repentance, vocation, and the willingness to deploy what God gave you in service to others, regardless of whether the intellectuals approve.

Build something. Serve someone. Answer for it before the Master.

That is the only audit that matters.

You know the saying: “Pride goes before a fall.”

It shows up in graduation speeches, leadership books, and locker room talks. It has the feel of Scripture. Most people assume it is Scripture.

Here’s what Scripture actually says.

Proverbs 16:18 — “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

The word in the popular version is fall. The word in the Bible is destruction.

That’s not a minor edit. That’s the difference between a stumble and catastrophe.

What Destruction Actually Means

A fall suggests a setback. An embarrassment. Something time shortly recovers.

Destruction is a bit different.

The Hebrew word here is שֶׁבֶר (sheber): shattering, ruin beyond repair. It appears in contexts of armies annihilated, cities reduced to rubble, and lives that do not recover. It is not the vocabulary of a stumble.

Proverbs 16:18 is not a warning about your reputation taking a hit. It is a warning about irreversible ruin.

The sanitized version turns a dire spiritual warning into a self-help maxim. Solomon was not writing a maxim.

Why Pride Earns That Warning

Pride is not at the bottom of God’s concern list. It is at the top.

Proverbs 6:16 opens God’s list of what He hates with “haughty eyes” - the visible expression of a proud heart. Proverbs 16:5 leaves no room for comfort: “Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.”

Abomination. The same word is used for idolatry.

John MacArthur, in his sermon series Four Hallmarks of Humility at Grace Community Church, cuts to the heart: “Pride is a subtle and sinister threat that continually stalks the Christian life. Pride is so utterly subversive it often attacks us subconsciously. Even our piety can become a battlefield with pride.”

He’s right. And pride is sinister precisely because it is not primarily a social problem. It is a theological one.

R.C. Sproul, writing in “Satan the Proud and Powerful,” identifies pride as the defining vulnerability of Satan himself: “Pride was Satan’s supreme weakness.”

Isaiah 14:13–14 shows us the autopsy: “You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’”

Five “I wills.” Every one of them is a direct assault on the throne of God.

Pride at its core is not arrogance about talent or title. It is the fundamental assertion that the self belongs at the center; that my judgment, my will, my desires are the proper measure of reality.

That is not a personality flaw. It is the original act of rebellion, repeated in every human heart.

What God Does With the Proud

God does not shrug at pride. He takes a position.

James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 both quote Proverbs 3:34 verbatim; the same warning, three times across the canon: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” God is not neutral toward the proud. He is opposed.

That ruin does not arrive without cause. It arrives because the proud have placed themselves in direct opposition to God. He does not need to pursue them; He simply withdraws, and the structure collapses under its own weight.

That is what Proverbs 16:18 is warning you about. Not embarrassment. Structural collapse.

The Radical Revelation

We have softened the most dangerous sin in the Bible into a social liability.

“Don’t be too proud, you might trip.”

That is not what Solomon wrote. Solomon wrote that pride builds its house on ground that does not hold; and when the structure falls, nothing is left.

The softened version is a warning about reputation. The biblical version is a warning about the soul.

Treat them the same way at your own risk.

Paul didn’t write to nominal believers. He wrote to the elect, people God had chosen, and whose lives showed it.

1 Thessalonians 1:3-4 names exactly what he saw: “...your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that He has chosen you.”

Three marks. Not three suggestions. Three evidences that election is real.

Faith That Works

The Greek word Paul used for “work” is ἔργον (ergon); a deed produced by something. Faith’s work is not optional decoration; it is the inevitable output of genuine belief.

James makes the test brutally simple: “Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2:18, ESV). You cannot display what is invisible. Works are the display window.

Peter adds the crucible: trials, “...the tested genuineness of your faith; more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7, ESV). Tested faith is proven faith. The trial is not the problem; it is the proof.

Titus 3:8 drives it home: “...those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works.” Careful. Devoted. Not casual.

MacArthur put it precisely in a GTY article on Lordship Salvation: “Obedience is the inevitable manifestation of saving faith.” Inevitable. Not occasional. Not situational. The fruit is built into the nature of the root.

Faith that produces nothing is not faith. It is vocabulary.

Love That Labors

Here is where Paul’s word choice exposes something most Christians miss. The Greek word for faith’s expression is ἔργον; general work. But for love’s expression, Paul chose κόπος (kopos): exhausting, wearying toil; effort that depletes you.

The distinction is intentional. Love is not a feeling that happens to you. It is a discipline that costs you.

Hebrews 6:10 ties that cost to divine recognition: “For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints.” God notices costly love. He does not miss it.

The source of that love is not willpower. Romans 5:5 says it is poured in: “...God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

MacArthur pressed this point in a 1982 sermon on the marks of genuine faith at Grace Community Church: “I believe when a person is really exercising saving faith, there is in his heart a great love for God.” Love for God is not a personality trait; it is a regeneration marker. The heart that has been remade loves differently.

1 John 4:7-8 frames the diagnostic starkly: “Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God.” The absence of love is not a personality type. It is a spiritual condition.

1 John 3:18-19 demands proof: “...let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” Talk is cheap. Deeds cost. That is exactly the point.

Hope That Endures

The third Greek term is ὑπομονή (hypomonē): not passive waiting, but active, resolute endurance. A soldier holding his position when retreating is easier.

Jesus named the requirement plainly: “...the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10:22, ESV). Not who started. Not who had an emotional moment at a revival. Who finishes.

Paul names the engine: “...we labor and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God” (1 Timothy 4:10, ESV). The hope is not abstract comfort; it is the living God Himself — and that hope produces striving, not passivity.

Galatians 5:5 specifies the content: “...we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.” 1 Thessalonians 5:8 calls it a helmet; it protects the mind in the middle of the war. And Titus 3:7 anchors the legal standing: justified by grace, we are “heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

The inheritance is secured. The hope is not a wish; it is a title deed already recorded in heaven.

The Three That Abide

Colossians 1:4-5 echoes exactly: “...your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.”

Faith. Love. Hope. They travel as a set.

1 Corinthians 13:13 says all three will abide: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

In eternity, faith gives way to sight.

Hope gives way to possession.

But love survives the resurrection unchanged; the only one of the three that eternity does not make obsolete.

That is not a footnote. It is the architecture of the Christian life.

What This Means for You

You do not need to audit your entire spiritual history today. Ask three honest questions:

• Is my faith producing anything visible, or am I coasting on a past conversion moment?

• Is my love costing me anything, or am I being pleasant without sacrificing anything?

• Is my hope in the living God keeping me in the fight, or have I quietly stopped expecting His return to matter?

The Thessalonians were commended because their answers were yes. Paul could see it. Their community bore visible evidence of election.

1 Thessalonians 1:3-4 is not a compliment. It is a description.

The question is whether it describes you.

But, it’s not in the Bible.

Where It Actually Comes From

John Wesley used the phrase in a sermon in the late 18th century, likely drawing from ancient Babylonian and Hebrew moral writings. Scholars trace elements of the idea even further back. It has deep cultural roots.

What it does not have is a single verse of Scripture behind it.

That matters more than most people realize; because the phrase does not just convey a harmless sentiment about personal hygiene. It carries a theological load it was never authorized to carry.

What the Bible Actually Says About Human Cleanliness

The irony here is precise.

The verse that comes closest to addressing human cleanliness before God says exactly the opposite of what the phrase implies.

Isaiah 64:6: “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment; we all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”

The Hebrew phrase translated “polluted garment” is בֶּגֶד עִדִּים (beged iddim): a garment soiled by menstrual discharge, ritually unclean under Mosaic law, untouchable. Isaiah is not reaching for a polite metaphor. He is reaching for the most viscerally repugnant image available in the ceremonial system to make his point impossible to soften.

The garments God finds repugnant are not our worst moments. They are our righteous deeds.

R.C. Sproul, in his sermon Clothed in Christ’s Righteousness at Ligonier Ministries, draws the conclusion plainly: “When we attempt to justify ourselves to make ourselves comfortable in the presence of God, to provide for ourselves our own handmade coverings, they are as filth, rags.”

You cannot wash your way to God. The very act of trying is, by God’s own description, unclean.

The Theological Trap in a Harmless Phrase

This is where the misquote becomes dangerous.

“Cleanliness is next to godliness,” repeated often enough and earnestly enough, quietly reinforces a specific theology: that external order, moral discipline, and personal righteousness bring one closer to God. That the cleaned-up life earns something. That the effort counts.

It does not.

John MacArthur states it without qualification in his sermon series Works or Grace? at Grace Community Church: “There are no works by which we can earn righteousness. There are none.”

Not partial works. Not well-intentioned works. None.

Titus 3:5 is the doctrinal nail: “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”

Paul does not say our works were insufficient. He says they were not the basis. The category of works-as-qualification does not exist in the gospel. Salvation is mercy, applied by the Holy Spirit, independent of anything we present.

Ephesians 2:8–9 holds the same line: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

The gift is not a reward for the tidiest version of yourself.

What God Actually Requires

Sproul closes one of his Romans sermons with a prayer that deserves to be read slowly: “Father, by Thy Spirit, crush any hope in our breast that would think we could earn our way into heaven. Help us to despair altogether of our flesh and any pretense of righteousness we think we possess.”

Despair of our own righteousness. That is the starting point, not the destination.

Psalm 51:17: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.”

David does not offer God a clean life. He offers God a shattered one. And that, Scripture says, is exactly what God will not turn away.

Philippians 3:8–9 shows what the destination looks like. Paul, by his own accounting the most credentialed religious person in the room, calls his entire moral resume “rubbish” compared to “being found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”

Not your righteousness. His. Received by faith. Imputed to the account of the one who comes with nothing.

MacArthur puts the entire exchange in one sentence from his sermon God’s Gift of Righteousness: “We cannot attain it; it has to be given to us, and it has to be given to us by grace.”

What to Do With This

• The next time you hear “cleanliness is next to godliness” used as spiritual wisdom, ask where it is in Scripture. Silence will be the answer.

• Read Isaiah 64:6 in its full context. Then read Isaiah 61:10: “He has clothed me with garments of salvation; He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.” God’s answer to our beged iddim is not soap. It is a robe He provides Himself.

• Examine whether your own approach to God is quietly works-oriented. External order and moral discipline are not the path to God. They are, at best, the fruit of having already found Him through Christ.

There is no amount of washing that qualifies you for the presence of a holy God.

The good news is that He already knew that; and sent His Son anyway.

2 Corinthians 5:21: “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

That is not something you can earn. That is something you receive.

The world hates the Jews.

Why?

The hatred is too old, too consistent, and too precise to be accidental.

Why does a small nation — outnumbered, surrounded, perpetually threatened — remain the singular fixation of history’s most demonic movements? Why did Pharaoh target Hebrew boys? Why did Haman draft a decree of annihilation? Why did Hitler build an industrial machinery of genocide?

The answer is not found in political science. It is found in Revelation 12.

The Dragon, the Woman, and the Child

Revelation 12:1–4 is not symbolic poetry. It’s a war map.

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun…She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared…a great red dragon…And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.”

The woman is Israel. The dragon is Satan. The child is Christ.

Genesis 3:15 is God’s declaration of war; spoken directly to Satan in the Garden:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head.”

A Seed was coming. Through a specific woman. A specific nation. A specific line.

Satan heard it. He heard his own sentence: "he shall bruise your head." And he has been trying to escape it ever since.

From the time of Abraham, Israel holds a critical role in God’s plan of redemption. First, in bringing forth the Messiah and Redeemer. Then, in the fulfillment of His plan; because Jesus promised that the Jewish people would exist and welcome Him when He returns in glory.

Two roles. Two targets. One strategy that shifted the moment the tomb was empty.

Satan doesn’t attack blindly. He doesn’t guess. He knows the Bible, not as a believer knows it, but as a tactician studying his opponent’s playbook.

Strategy One: Stop the Birth

For centuries, Satan had one objective. Kill the Messianic line before the Seed arrived.

That thread runs from Egypt to Persia to Bethlehem. Pharaoh killing Hebrew boys. Athaliah nearly wiping out the Davidic line in a single act of murderous ambition. Haman’s empire-wide decree of annihilation. Herod’s slaughter of the innocents.

For centuries, Israel agonized and suffered; longing for the Child who would come to destroy Satan, sin, and death. No nation in history has suffered as long or as severely, both from God’s chastening and from Satan’s furious efforts to destroy the nation through whom the Messiah would come.

Every massacre. Every empire. Every attempt to break the covenant line before the promise could be fulfilled.

Strategy One failed.

The Messiah was born, crucified, buried, and resurrected. Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled. The seed of the woman crushed the serpent’s head.

So Satan moved on with a new objective.

Strategy Two: Prevent His Return

This is the part many Christians completely miss.

The Second Coming is not unconditional. Jesus claimed in Matthew 23:39 - “For I tell you, you will not see Me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Christ does not return to an empty stage. He returns when the nation Israel calls Him back. When the covenant people acknowledge, in corporate repentance, the One they pierced.

Hosea 5:15 confirms it: “I will return again to My place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face.”

Zechariah 12:10 names it: “They will look on Me, on Him whom they have pierced.”

MacArthur is explicit: Satan focuses his attention on destroying the Jewish people and preventing the return of Christ. The dragon hates Israel because it is the woman that brought forth the Messiah the first time, and it is her repentance and looking in faith that will bring the Messiah the second time.

The logic is brutal and precise. Destroy Israel; erase the trigger condition. No covenant people; no corporate repentance. No corporate repentance; no return. No return; no kingdom.

If Satan succeeds in destroying the Jewish people, God’s eternal covenants with Abraham and David are rendered void. God becomes a liar.

That is the calculation. That is why Satan continues and will never stop.

Satan Knows the Bible

Most Christians never consider this.

Satan understands Messianic prophecy. He understands Genesis 12:3. He understands the unconditional covenants. He reads the same Scriptures we do; he simply refuses to accept the verdict.

Satan understands that if he can destroy the Jewish nation, God’s eternal plan is in some way thwarted.

This is why Erwin Lutzer, in Hitler’s Cross, his definitive study of Satan’s role in the Holocaust, argues that antisemitism is not reducible to ethnic hatred or political grievance. It operates within the parameters of Satan’s freedom, aimed at a specific eschatological objective. The Holocaust was not merely human evil unleashed. It was the dragon’s most systematic modern attempt to erase the woman from the earth before the Tribulation’s final chapter forces his hand.

Six million lives. One demonic strategy. We are still in that same war.

Why He Keeps Fighting After He Knows He Loses

The strangest element of this story is not Satan’s persistence.

It is the irrationality of it.

He knows the prophecies. He knows Zechariah 14. He knows Revelation 19. He has read the end of the book; his destruction is certain and specific.

And yet he will not stop.

MacArthur offers the most honest explanation available: Satan might give up his fight, except for the fact that he is utterly depraved and probably insane in some way. He may have deceived even himself into thinking he has a chance.

The hatred of Israel is not rational self-interest. It is the outworking of a will so depraved it cannot stop fighting a verdict already rendered.

He is not confused about the outcome. He is incapable of surrender. This eerily sounds like Iran, which is now the central antagonist against Israel.

What This Means for Today

Revelatgivesion 12:17 frames the present moment: “Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring.”

When you see the nations mobilize against Israel, you are watching prophecy. When you see the oldest hatred resurface in new ideological clothing, you are watching strategy.

This is not a geopolitical dispute with two legitimate sides. It is the final phase of a cosmic war that began in Eden; a war the dragon started, cannot win, but refuses to surrender.

God’s covenants with Israel are unconditional. Romans 11:29 settles it: “The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

Satan knows this. He is trying to make God a liar.

He will fail.

The woman survives. The Child returns. The dragon is thrown into the lake of fire.

The verdict is sealed. It will not be overturned.

It is not Scripture. Not one word of it.

Where It Actually Comes From

The phrase traces to Persian proverb traditions, developed by medieval Sufi poets, and arrived in Western literature through that same cultural migration. Abraham Lincoln used it in an 1859 address to the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society, attributing it to “an Eastern monarch.” It is a piece of human wisdom with deep cultural roots.

What it does not have is a single verse of inspired Scripture behind it.

That distinction matters; this phrase is not merely repeated as trivia. It is deployed as comfort to people in genuine pain. And comfort applied to the wrong wound is not neutral; it delays the right treatment.

The Problem With Theological Anesthesia

“This too shall pass” soothes the way anesthesia soothes: by numbing rather than healing.

It offers the suffering person one thing: time. The pain will eventually stop. Endure long enough, and the difficulty will recede.

That is not what the Bible offers.

The Bible does not tell you the pain will pass on your timeline. It tells you the pain is doing something.

John MacArthur, preaching on Romans 8 at Grace Community Church, frames the biblical position without softening it: suffering is not an interruption to be tolerated or a season to survive. It is an active, purposeful, divinely orchestrated preparation for something so immeasurably greater that Paul strains the limits of language to describe the contrast.

What Paul Actually Says

Romans 8:18 — “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

The word translated “I consider” is λογίζομαι (logizomai): a deliberate accounting term. Paul is not expressing a feeling or a hope. He is stating the result of a reasoned calculation. He has run the numbers on suffering and glory, and the conclusion is not even close.

2 Corinthians 4:17 presses the contrast further: “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”

Two words carry the argument. The Greek for “light” is ἐλαφρόν: trivial, of no consequence. The Greek for “weight of glory” is βάρος: heaviness, substance, magnitude. Paul is setting a feather against a stone; and he calls your suffering the feather.

The man who wrote that had been beaten with rods three times, shipwrecked three times, stoned at Lystra and left for dead (2 Corinthians 11:24–25; Acts 14:19). He was not writing from comfort about abstract theology. He was writing from a broken body; and he called it light. He suffered well beyond what was even written.

What the Bible Promises Instead

“This too shall pass” gives you a destination: the end of pain.

Scripture gives you something entirely different: a purpose for the pain and a glory that renders it incomparable.

Romans 5:3–4 — “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”

Not just endurance. Character. And not just character. Hope. The chain does not end at relief; it ends at something forged in the furnace of exactly what you are going through.

1 Peter 5:10 — “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”

Four verbs. All active. All initiated by God. He does not promise the pain passes. He promises He will do something with it. The person who comes through suffering in God’s hands is not the same person who entered it.

MacArthur, writing on Romans 8, frames the entire arc this way: whatever we endure in this life, God is working it toward a final, eternal good; and our eternity with Him is unassailable.

Take This With You

The next time you are tempted to say “this too shall pass” to a suffering person, offer them Romans 8:18 instead. Not as a rebuke; as a gift. Time ends. Glory does not.

Read 2 Corinthians 4:17 and focus on the original meanings. Paul calls your suffering ἐλαφρόν. He has earned the right to say that. Hear him.

“This too shall pass” gives you time.

The Bible gives you eternity; and it tells you the suffering between here and there is not wasted. It is the preparation.

“This too shall pass” ends at relief. Romans 8:18 ends at glory. One of those is worth building your life on.

I never got an answer. What I got was better…well, at least more interesting.

A fellow Substack author was making the case for unlimited atonement: that Christ died for every individual who has ever lived, making salvation available to all who believe.

I asked the only logical follow-up: if Christ has paid in full for the sins of every human being who ever lived, how do you explain hell?

In other words, assuming you’re correct, hell is now populated with those whose sins Christ fully paid for.

Three writers attacked me. Yet, not one of them answered my question.

One suggested there are actually two resurrections: the first brings believers to heaven, and the second brings non-believers to heaven after a delay. I guess kind of a universalism with a purgatory waiting room.

When I pointed out this was not Biblical, I was informed that if I wanted to be taken seriously, I needed to understand that the pastoral epistles lack any real authority and that Onesimus was, in fact, the actual author of the real Bible.

Actually, there are, in fact, two biblical resurrections. You can read John 5:28-29 or, here’s the Old Testament version in Daniel 12:2 “some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” Funny how that truth got twisted.

I am not making that up.

They had me at two resurrections.

The Fundamental Doctrines of Grace

Before I begin, let me review the doctrines of grace, which rest on five interlocking pillars.

Absolute Inability: man is dead from the sin of Adam, and incapable of seeking God on his own (Ephesians 2:1: "you were dead in your trespasses and sins.").

Divine Election: God chose a specific people for salvation before the foundation of the world, based entirely on His sovereign will, not foreseen faith, nor the will of men (Ephesians 1:4 “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world”).

Actual Atonement: the cross actually secured and guaranteed the salvation of every person the Father gave to the Son; not a potential redemption for all, but a definite redemption for the elect, and this is where I plant my flag in this post (John 17:9: Christ's own words: "I am not praying for the world but for those whom You have given Me").

Effectual Call: the Holy Spirit applies that redemption by regenerating those whom God calls (John 6:44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him”).

Persevering Faith: those truly saved are kept by God’s power and will never fall away (John 10:28 “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish”).

These are the Doctrines of Grace; the same architecture as the classic TULIP, restated with more precise words by John MacArthur.

Four of the five are widely accepted among Reformed believers. The fifth is where the argument starts.

Many Christians assume Christ died for every person who ever lived.

It sounds humble. It sounds generous. It sounds obvious.

This post argues that it’s wrong.

MacArthur frames the entire question in The Doctrine of Actual Atonement (gty.org, 90-277): did Christ potentially save willing sinners, or did He actually secure salvation for those whom God by sovereign grace will make willing? His answer is unambiguous; the price was paid in full; you don’t have to activate it.

That single question is what this post is built on. Potential or actual. Offer or accomplishment. The answer changes everything.

What Happens When You Follow Bad Theology to Its End

When you insist Christ died for every person without exception, you have exactly two exits. You can accept universalism: that is, everyone goes to heaven - sooner or later. Or you can hold that God is punishing people in hell for sins His Son already paid for. The first is heresy. The second seems unjust.

There is no third door.

The moment someone invents a second resurrection to heaven, they have conceded the argument without knowing it. They have admitted their position requires a conclusion that the Bible never teaches.

And when the text refuses to cooperate, the next move is to fire the writer. When the pastoral epistles won’t support your theology, the obvious fix is to find a new author.

Apparently, Onesimus is available.

The question I asked is not a clever debate trick. It is the question the Bible itself forces on every reader who takes unlimited atonement seriously.

And the Bible has already answered it.

Isaiah Saw It Coming

Seven hundred years before the cross, the prophet Isaiah named exactly who the Servant would die for.

Isaiah 53:11–12 reads: “Out of the anguish of His soul He shall see and be satisfied; by His knowledge shall the righteous one, My Servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and He shall bear their iniquities... He bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.”

Why many and not all?

The Hebrew for “many” is רַבִּים (rabbim). The Holy Spirit did not reach for the Hebrew word for “all,” which would be כֹּל (kol). He chose rabbim deliberately. The Servant bears the iniquities of a specific people, makes intercession for a specific people, and is satisfied with the outcome for a specific people.

That is not ambiguity. That’s precision.

The Shepherd Named His Sheep

Jesus was equally specific. John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”

Not the goats. Not the whole flock of humanity without distinction. The sheep.

John 10:26: “You do not believe because you are not among My sheep.”

The reasons some never believe is not that Christ's atonement failed them. Non-believers were never among those for whom He died; and consistent with the dead nature they inherited from Adam, they reject Christ of their own free will.

That’s not a contradiction; that’s Absolute Inability and Actual Atonement working in perfect theological harmony.

John 17:9 is the verse my Substack critics would need to explain most. The night before the cross, Jesus prays: “I am not praying for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.”

Just before Calvary, Jesus does not pray for the whole world. He prays for a specific people. His intercession and His atonement cover the same ground.

He died for those He prayed for, and He prays for those He died for.

They are the same people.

Paul Closes the Case

The atonement was not designed for every person who ever lived. It was designed for every person the Father chose:

the Old Testament elect,

the redeemed church,

those refusing the mark during the Tribulation, and

Millennial believers;

Revelation 5:9 explains “by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

Romans 8:32–34 closes the argument entirely; “He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all; who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? Christ Jesus is the one who died and is interceding for us.”

Paul ties the cross directly to the elect. Christ intercedes for those He died for. No charge can stand because the Son already absorbed the debt the Judge was owed.

The case is closed.

The Verse They Always Quote

I know what comes next: 1 John 2:2: “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”

Fair enough. Let’s work through that.

The word translated “propitiation” is ἱλασμός (hilasmos): a fully satisfied, wrath-absorbing sacrifice that settles the account completely. If Christ is the ἱλασμός for literally every individual without exception, then God’s wrath has been fully absorbed for every person who ever lived. None remains.

Hell is empty or will be.

That is universalism, and John was not a universalist.

John wrote to Jewish believers who assumed the gospel belonged to Israel alone. “The whole world” is not every individual; it is every kind of person: Jew and Gentile, every tribe and language. Revelation 5:9 confirms it: “You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

Actual Atonement, also known as Particular Redemption spans every people group.

It is not inclusive of every individual.

Why This Is Not Academic

Your assurance depends on which answer is true.

If Christ paid a universal price that you activated by your decision, then your salvation rests on your choice. Your will. Your faithfulness to maintain it.

That is an unstable foundation.

If Christ actually bore your specific sins, satisfied the specific wrath owed by you, and intercedes for you right now before the Father, then your standing is not a performance question.

Your standing on a finished-work.

Romans 8:33 drives it home: “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.” The Judge and the Justifier are the same person. No charge can stick because the One with the authority to condemn already paid the price to acquit. Your accuser has no standing in that courtroom; the case was dismissed at the cross.

That is either everything or nothing. There is no comfortable middle.

What to Do With This

• Read Isaiah 53 in one sitting. Notice every “many.” Let the precision of the text speak before you explain it away.

• The next time someone insists Christ died for everyone, ask the same question I did: what does that mean for hell? Follow the logic all the way down. See where it leads them.

• Read MacArthur’s Doctrines of Grace series at gty.org, specifically “The Doctrine of Actual Atonement” Parts 1 and 2. Every key objection is opened and answered.

The cross was not a failed rescue mission for billions who rejected the gift.

It was a completed redemption for every person the Father gave to the Son; not one lost, not one beyond its reach, not one for whom the blood proved insufficient.

True believers are resting on a finished work.

It has appeared on paintings, stained glass, Christmas cards, refrigerator magnets, and more tattoos than anyone can count.

There’s only one problem - Isaiah never wrote it.

Here’s what Isaiah said: Isaiah 11:6 “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.”

The wolf and the lamb. The leopard and the goat. The calf and the lion.

Even with a complete listing, the lion and lamb are not together - ever.

Isaiah 11:6 Wolf, lamb, leopard, young goat, calf, lion, fattened calf, little child.

Isaiah 11:7 Cow, bear, lion, ox.

Isaiah 11:8 Nursing child, cobra, weaned child, adder.

Isaiah 65:25 Wolf, lamb, lion, ox, serpent.

Why the Wrong Animals Actually Matter

This is not trivial. The image Isaiah constructed was deliberately confrontational.

A lion beside a lamb is powerful; but a wolf beside a lamb is something more terrifying. The wolf is the predator most associated with the destruction of the flock throughout Scripture, and used repeatedly by Isaiah. In John 10:12 Jesus even describes the hired hand fleeing with “the wolf comes and snatches them.”

Isaiah’s prophecy does not picture a gentle softening of nature. It pictures the complete inversion of the created order under the reign of the Messiah.

The most dangerous becomes safe. The most vulnerable is protected. A little child leads them all.

What the Text Is Actually Describing

John MacArthur, preaching through the Revelation vision of the Lamb, correctly anchors this passage in its full eschatological weight. In his sermon “A Vision of the Lamb, Part 2,” he describes Isaiah as having been given “the privilege of seeing ahead to the day when the curse on the earth would be reversed, when paradise would be restored, regained” — the wolf dwelling with the lamb, the leopard lying down with the kid, the lion eating straw like an ox, children playing beside vipers unharmed.

This is not poetry about a kinder, gentler world. MacArthur describes the millennial kingdom as “a restored and radically reconstructed earth” - paradise regained - the direct undoing of everything that fell in Genesis 3 (“The Climax of Human History,” gty.org).

R.C. Sproul, approaching Isaiah from his Reformed vantage, consistently described Isaiah’s prophecies as pointing to a government that would establish perfect peace, justice, and righteousness under the coming King; not a sentimental vision of harmony, but the sovereign rule of the Messiah over every realm of creation, from nations to the animal kingdom.

Both men understood what the domesticated misquote erases: this is eschatological promise, not inspirational art.

The Radical Revelation

The “lion and lamb” image flattens what Isaiah actually declared.

The true image is more radical, more specific, and more theologically charged. It describes a Kingdom in which not merely the strong become gentle, but in which the entire predator-prey relationship is abolished by the reign of the One of whom Isaiah 11:2 says, “the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him.”

MacArthur notes that the same chapter that describes this Kingdom also describes the seven-fold ministry of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and fear of the Lord. The animals are not the point.

The King behind them is.

This is not sentimentality about nature. This is an eschatological promise about the coming King.

When you replace the wolf with a lion, you make the image prettier. You also make it smaller.

The Bible’s vision of the coming Kingdom is never smaller than what we imagine. It is always larger.

A Final Word

Even our best teachers sometimes use the popular shorthand. MacArthur himself, in a sermon on creation, slipped into “the lion will lie down with the lamb” the common misquote, before correcting to the precise text elsewhere in his expositions. The image is that deeply embedded in Christian culture.

But embedded does not mean accurate. And comfortable does not mean biblical.

The text does not exist to comfort us. It exists to declare what the reign of Jesus Christ will actually accomplish.

That is a far more terrifying, and far more glorious, promise than any greeting card has ever held.

All weapon points in the same direction. Hamas in Gaza. Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Houthis in Yemen. Militias in Iraq. Assad's Syria until it collapsed.

Four proxy wars. Four theaters. One sponsor. One demonic instigator.

The analysts call it regional hegemony. The diplomats call it destabilization. The wonks call it the Shia crescent. All of these explanations contain pieces of the truth. None of them gets to the root.

Here is what they all miss: Iran is not confused. Iran is not erratic. Iran does not have multiple positions in the Middle East. Iran has one position: the destruction of Israel. Everything else is infrastructure.

The Bible Called It 2,600 Years Ago

Ezekiel 38:5 reads plainly: “Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet.”

Persia. The Hebrew word is פָּרַס (Paras). It is the exact term the ancient world used for the empire occupying the land we now call Iran. No serious commentator debates the geography. Persia is Iran. Iran is Persia. The name changed. The land did not.

John MacArthur, preaching through Ezekiel 38, identifies it without hesitation: “Verse 5, Persia which is Iran” (”The Destruction of the Nations, Part 4,” gty.org). He places Iran explicitly in the northern coalition aligned against Israel in the end-times scenario Ezekiel describes.

This is not newspaper exegesis. It is not reading current events into ancient symbols. It is the plain, literal reading of a text that has always said what it says. The word Paras in Ezekiel 38:5 is not a code. It is a proper noun.

The Proxy Network Is Not Confusing. It Is the Strategy.

Iran does not fund Hamas because it loves Sunni Palestinians. Iran is Persian and Shia. Hamas is Arab and Sunni. Theologically, they have substantial disagreements. Historically, Persia and Arabia have been adversaries for centuries.

But Iran funds Hamas anyway; because Hamas’s mission is the destruction of Israel. And that mission is the one conviction that overrides every other consideration in the Islamic Republic’s ideology.

The same logic explains Hezbollah: a northern front against Israel. The Houthis: southern and naval pressure. The Iraqi militias: land bridge control and proximity to Israel’s eastern flank. What looks like chaos from the outside is a coordinated ring. The goal is encirclement.

Analysts miss this because they explain Iranian foreign policy through conventional geopolitical frameworks: spheres of influence, resource competition, sectarian rivalry. Iran’s leadership does not primarily operate inside those frameworks. It operates inside an eschatological framework; the belief that the destruction of the Jewish state is a divine mandate.

That belief system is ancient. Scripture anticipated it.

The Persistence of Satan

What the analysts cannot say is why the hatred is so durable; not only in Tehran, but in the newsroom, the university, the NGO, the protest movement, the entertainment industry, the corporate boardroom, the leftist political class, the legal apparatus, and the global multilateral institutions that rationalizes and supports all they do.

Persian-Sunni theological rivalry should make this alliance impossible. Self-interest alone should have collapsed years ago.

But the Islamic Republic is not acting out of self-interest. It is operating on something older.

Revelation 12 makes the architecture visible: behind every nation that has ever arrayed itself against Israel is a dragon who understands Messianic prophecy better than most seminaries do.

Satan knows that Israel’s national survival is inseparable from Christ’s return. He knows Matthew 23:39: “For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

He knows that if the Jewish people are destroyed, the trigger condition for the Second Coming is never pulled.

Iran does not need to understand any of that consciously. The hooks are already in the jaw.

They are simply being led.

What Ezekiel Actually Describes

The prophet describes a coalition of nations that marshals against Israel in the last days.

At the center is a great power from the north, aligned with a specific list of allies. MacArthur, in his 2012 sermon “The Salvation of Israel” (gty.org), describes the full picture: a massive force from the north, allied with Arab nations to the south, kings from the east, powers converging from every direction.

The military picture is global encirclement. The theological picture is the nations of the world arrayed against God’s covenant people in a final reckoning.

Ezekiel 38:4 says the Lord Himself draws this coalition: “I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out.” The nations do not choose this. They are led by a sovereign God into a confrontation that ends in their destruction.

The Gog-Magog coalition acts against Israel. God acts against the coalition. The text is not ambiguous about who wins.

What is striking is not that Ezekiel prophesied this. What is striking is that the architecture is visibly forming.

Russia (identified by most premillennial commentators as Magog) and Iran (Persia) are currently military and diplomatic allies. The coordinated Houthi campaign demonstrated that even distant proxies can be directed from Iranian command against Israeli targets. The ring is being built.

This does not mean the Gog-Magog war is happening now. It means the stage is being set.

What happens next between the United States and Iran, no one knows.

Whether this escalates into direct military confrontation, collapses into negotiated restraint, or pivots into something no analyst has modeled, that outcome is genuinely uncertain.

What is not uncertain is who governs the outcome. God is not watching this unfold. He is directing it. The same sovereign hand that put hooks in Gog’s jaw is the hand that moves every piece on this board, including the ones in Washington.

What Believers Should Do With This

Three things.

Stop being surprised. When Iran fires missiles at Israel, when another proxy war ignites, when another analyst says the region is “increasingly unstable” you are watching a pattern Scripture identified centuries ago. Surprise is a symptom of spiritual amnesia.

Stop being afraid. Ezekiel 38:22 records God’s response to the coalition: “I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur.” The nations arrayed against Israel are not winning. Believers who know their Bibles have already read the last chapter. Rest assured in that.

Start praying with informed urgency. The church inside Iran is one of the fastest-growing in the world, precisely because of state persecution. Pray for them. Pray for Arab governments that are increasingly choosing alignment with Israel over Tehran. Pray for the Jewish people who have no idea what the covenant God is orchestrating on their behalf. None of this is background noise.

The One Thing the Analysts Cannot Say

Every geopolitical framework eventually hits a wall.

The realist framework explains behavior through power. The ideological framework explains behavior through theology. Neither one can account for a God who moves nations like pieces on a board and announces the outcome before the game begins.

Isaiah 46:10 makes the claim no think tank ever will: “declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.”

Ezekiel did not write about the Middle East to give future commentators something to argue over. He wrote because God wanted His people to know who governs history. Not the Ayatollah. Not the Security Council. Not the proxy militias. Not the nuclear program.

When you understand Iran, you are not watching a foreign policy problem.

You are watching a prophecy being staged.

Unfortunately, this phrase does not mean what people think it says, and it does not belong to everyone who says it.

It isn’t that God stays away when pain comes. But, the words mean something else entirely - something most miss.

That line about everything happening for a reason? Martyn Lloyd-Jones didn’t buy it. While teaching on Romans 8, he said verse twenty-eight stood out like few others in all the Bible. Yet what people often say now isn’t what he praised. Their version mimics belief - feels spiritual - but asks nothing in return.

The Verse People Think They’re Quoting

Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Some interpret “everything happens for a reason” as if scripture supports the idea. This common belief connects fate with divine intent. Still, such thinking stems more from culture than doctrine.

Read it again slowly.

Notice three things the verse actually says, which the popular phrase does not.

First: It is addressed to a specific people: “those who love God... those who are called according to His purpose.” This is a covenant promise to believers, not a blanket reassurance for all of humanity.

Second: It says “all things work together for good,” not that all things are good, or that all things will feel purposeful, or that the reason will soon become apparent.

Third: The good is defined by “His purpose,” not by your comfort, your preferences, or your resolution timeline.

John MacArthur, in his exposition of this passage, pressed exactly this point: whether the situation is good, bad, or utterly incomprehensible, the believer rests in the settled confidence that God is doing His work, in His way, according to His will. The promise is not comprehension. It is confidence rooted in sovereignty.

The Danger of Vague Comfort

“Everything happens for a reason” is cross-religious. It is used by people of every faith and by those of no faith. It requires no commitment to the God of Scripture, no covenant relationship, and no need for Christ.

That alone should be a theological warning sign.

When a comfort can be offered indiscriminately to everyone, it usually belongs specifically to no one.

R.C. Sproul drew a sharp and necessary distinction. He separated what he called the proximate from the ultimate. On the proximate level - the horizontal plane of everyday human experience - bad things are genuinely bad. Sproul was direct: sin is bad, pain is bad, suffering is bad. Scripture never asks you to call it otherwise.

But at the ultimate level, Sproul declared plainly: “there are no tragedies for the Christian.” Every dark providence, every unanswered question, every grief that makes no earthly sense is being worked by the sovereign God toward an eternal good He has already defined.

Then Sproul turned the coin over. For the unbeliever who persists in unbelief, he warned, every blessing received from God in this life ultimately deepens the weight of wrath stored up for the day of judgment. Every gift ungratefully received, every common grace unacknowledged, adds to the account.

Romans 8:28 is not a human interest story about the universe being benevolent. It is a covenant promise to a specific people. The unbeliever has no claim to it. Offering it as though they do does not comfort them. It misleads them.

What Romans 8:28 Actually Offers

The promise of Romans 8:28 is not comprehension. It is confidence.

The believer does not need to understand why something happened to trust that God is working it toward a good that He has defined.

Lloyd-Jones captured the pastoral weight of this: the Christian can be certain about the ultimate, even when most uncertain about the immediate. You may not see the purpose. You may not live to see the resolution. But the certainty of the outcome is not in question, because God’s plan was not conceived after the fall, and it will not be undone by any trial you face in this life.

Romans 8:29 immediately clarifies what that good is: “to be conformed to the image of His Son.”

The purpose of “all things working together” is not your happiness. It is your holiness. Read that again; it is the key to all the trials and suffering believers endure.

MacArthur said it with characteristic directness in his sermon “Heirs of God”: the Holy Spirit is not interested in silliness; He is interested in holiness. He is interested in Christlikeness.

Every hard thing God allows into your life: every suffering, every loss, every long silence, is in the service of that singular purpose. Making you look more like Christ. That is the good He is working toward. That is the reason behind all His reasons.

And that is far better, even when it is far harder.

The Takeaway

Stop offering Romans 8:28 to people who are not in Christ. It is not their promise to hold.

And for those who are in Christ: the promise is not that they will understand the reason for their pain, suffering, and losses. It is that the Author of your story has not lost the plot.

The good He is working toward is not a comfortable life. It is a conformed life; conformed to the image of His Son, who suffered, who endured, who trusted the Father through Gethsemane and the cross.

Can you trust the outcome of your story to the One who wrote the beginning and the end?

The world, religion, and well-meaning people will all push counterfeits your way.

To discern true Christianity, you need to know what it isn’t.

There are seven contrasts here. Seven lines in the sand.

1. Religion vs. The Gospel

This is the most important distinction you can ever make.

Religion is man’s attempt to get to God through moral performance, ritual, and membership.

The Gospel is the truth that God reaches us through the perfect and finished work of Jesus Christ.

MacArthur makes his entire case in The Gospel According to Jesus on this single distinction: religion demands something from you; the Gospel declares something was done for you.

There is an absolute distinction here.

Religion says: “Do better. Try harder. Earn your standing.”

Jesus declared: “It is finished” (John 19:30).

Ephesians 2:8–9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith... not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Your church attendance and moral achievements will never save you. Good deeds may prove salvation. They will never produce it.

2. Intellectual Belief vs. Saving Faith

Many people believe about Jesus. That is not the same as trusting in Jesus.

Belief means acknowledging facts: the historical Jesus, the Resurrection, the existence of a God.

Saving faith is the complete surrender of your mind, will, and affections to Christ as Lord and Savior.

Sproul leaned heavily on the Reformers’ distinction between assensus (intellectual agreement) and fiducia (personal trust) to argue that saving faith is not knowing facts about Christ; it is resting the soul upon Him alone. (Faith Alone)

“Even demons believe and shudder,” according to James 2:19. And yet, they remain condemned.

Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Have you accepted facts about Jesus, or have you surrendered your life to Him? That is the real issue.

3. Guilt vs. Godly Sorrow

Not every feeling of guilt leads to repentance.

Guilt is the sense of condemnation when someone catches you doing something wrong. Godly sorrow is grief over offending a holy God through your sins.

Washer’s entire case in The Gospel’s Power and Message is that true repentance is not based on sorrow over consequences. It is sorrow over sin as a direct offense against a holy God.

Guilt drove Judas to sorrow and even suicide, yet he was still condemned (Matthew 27:3-5).

Godly sorrow led Peter back to Christ (John 21:15–17).

2 Corinthians 7:10: “Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”

When you sin, the response is not worldly guilt. Mourn that it displeased Him; then repent and turn away from it.

4. Justification vs. Sanctification

These go together, but they are separate realities.

Justification is God’s legal declaration of your righteousness; based on Christ’s perfect righteousness, which you received through faith alone. It happens once. It is complete. It never changes.

Sanctification is the ongoing process by which the Holy Spirit transforms you into Christ’s image. It is a gradual, progressive process that involves struggle, growth, and perseverance over your lifetime.

Sproul consistently argued that justification is the permanent ground of the believer’s standing before God, while sanctification is the ongoing evidence of that standing: the two are inseparable but still totally distinct concepts. (Faith Alone)

1 Corinthians 6:11: “You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

You are not justified because you are becoming holy. You are becoming holy because you are justified.

5. Conviction vs. Regeneration

Many experience conviction without ever having saving faith.

Conviction is God using the Spirit to convict someone of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). However, it can be ignored and rejected.

Regeneration is God using the Spirit to give new birth. Only God can regenerate. It is a transformation of the whole person from the inside out.

Lloyd-Jones wrote that “conviction must always precede conversion; the gospel of Christ condemns before it releases.” But conviction is not the same as the new birth. One is the Spirit pressing on the outside of a closed door; the other is the Spirit opening it from within.

John 3:5–6: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Having a conviction of sin never saves anyone. You need to seek out the signs of genuine regeneration; namely a new passion for Christ and a hatred for sin, along with a newfound hunger for God’s word.

6. Assurance vs. Presumption

Assurance is a gift. Presumption is a trap.

Assurance is knowing that you are a child of God with a confidence based on Scripture, the internal witness of the Spirit, and the spiritual growth in your life.

Presumption is assuming you are saved based on a past prayer experiences, church membership, or family heritage; without ever examining whether genuine faith is actually present.

Washer stated it plainly: “The greatest heresy in the American Evangelical and Protestant church is that if you pray and ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart, He will definitely come in.” That sermon became a book. The indictment has not changed. (Ten Indictments Against the Modern Church)

Self-examination is even commanded by Paul in the Bible (2 Corinthians 13:5).

2 Peter 1:10: “Be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.”

Don’t presume you have the assurance of salvation; examine yourself to see if anything has changed in light of the Gospel.

7. Fear of Man vs. Fear of God

This contrast will shape every day of your Christian life.

Fear of man is ordering your life around what people think of you.

Fear of God is reverent awe and respect of God’s holy nature, sovereignty, and rights. This awe frees you from needing the approval of man.

MacArthur wrote in his Proverbs introduction that wisdom “is built on the fear of the Lord and the Word of God” not one virtue among many, but the foundation beneath all the others. (MacArthur Study Bible)

Fear of man is a snare (Proverbs 29:25). Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

Matthew 10:28: “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

People will pressure you. Family, friends, and the culture will all tempt you to live contrary to the Gospel. The cure? Fear God more than you fear man.

These Contrasts Will Cost You Something

Even long-time believers fail to discern all the above contrasts.

They accept whatever the culture hands them, sit in churches that never address them, and build their worldview around false assumptions.

Ignorance is no longer a defense.

You know the difference between religion and the Gospel. True regeneration from mere conviction. Present assurance from past presumption.

That knowledge demands something: now you must act.

Examine yourself. Go deep in Scripture. Refuse to be deceived by counterfeits.

“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

He is faithful. Are you?

Share The Inevitable Truth

This should immediately cause us some concern.

The concept has its origins in the works of Augustine, with others crediting it to Gandhi.

It reflects something true and important.

Sinners are still image-bearers, they are still loved by God, and they should still be pursued with the Gospel.

But, when the phrase is employed casually, it undermines the very intentions of its originator.

The Verses Nobody Reads

Psalm 5:5 — “You hate all evildoers.”

Psalm 11:5 — “The Lord tests the righteous, but His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.”

These verses are almost always ignored. They contradict our tendency to create a God who is perpetually happy about everyone, no matter what their condition.

But, they are in the Bible.

And, they are true.

The Hebrew word translated “hates” in Psalm 11:5 is שָׂנֵא (śānēʾ): to despise, to detest with settled conviction. This is not impatience. It is not mere disappointment. Holiness does not shrug at defiance. It recoils from it.

Ignoring these verses does not make God more loving.

It makes Him smaller.

What the Phrase Actually Does

Used carelessly, “hate the sin, love the sinner” stops being theology and starts being a social platitude.

It reassures the unbeliever: God is fine with you. He just has one little thing He would like to kind of sort out.

But this misses the teaching of Scripture.

The unrepentant sinner and his sin are not separate categories before a holy God. He is not an innocent man trapped by unfortunate behavior. He is a willing rebel who loves the darkness and chooses it daily.

Romans 1:32 is direct: “Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”

That is not a description of someone who needs reassurance.

That is a portrait of someone who needs a Savior.

The Two Truths the Bible Actually Holds

Scripture holds two truths in tension that the popular phrase collapses into one.

Certainly, God loves the world in the sense of common grace.

Matthew 5:45: “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

But… God also has a settled wrath toward the unrepentant.

John 3:36: “Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

The Greek word translated “remains” is μένει (menei): present active indicative. It’s not that the wrath of God is coming someday. It already rests on the one who has not believed.

Right now.

This moment.

Paul Washer has argued consistently that a Gospel which softens God’s wrath against sin does not produce genuine repentance. It produces a comfort that was never offered.

The Radical Revelation

Sin is not an abstraction that can be cleanly separated from the sinner who loves it, chooses it, and refuses to abandon it.

God’s love for sinners is what sent His Son to absorb the full weight of His wrath in their place. That is not a greeting card sentimentality. It is the most terrifying and glorious transaction in history.

When Christ cried from the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” He was not reciting a psalm for effect. He was receiving the full judicial weight of God’s wrath against sin so that those who repent and believe would never have to bear it themselves.

That is precisely what the phrase loses when used without precision.

What This Means for How You Evangelize

When we strip wrath from the message, we strip urgency from the hearer.

A man who believes God is basically fine with him has no reason to flee. He has no fire to escape, no debt to pay. He simply has a mildly disappointed Father who would like him to do better.

That is not the Gospel.

That is moralism dressed in evangelical language.

The true Gospel offers something incomparably greater: a God so holy He can not overlook even one sin, and so merciful He sent His Son to bear every sin for those who repent and believe.

Both truths are necessary. Remove either one and the message collapses.

The phrase “hate the sin, love the sinner” is not wrong. It’s just dangerously incomplete.

A God with no wrath produced a cross with no purpose.

If the wrath was not real, neither was the rescue.

The moment you’re saved, a war commences.

Not against a nation. Against a system, a world order in full rebellion against God.

John does not offer a truce. 1 John 2:15 warns, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

The choice is binary. The line is absolute.

What Scripture Means By “The World”

Contrary to popular belief, the “world” does not refer to geography.

John uses the word kosmos to describe the entire degenerate system of values, beliefs, and aspirations behind the formation of a human society at war against God. John MacArthur defines it as “its treasures, its pleasures, its theories, its viewpoints… whatever element of its anti-God, anti-Christ ideology” that shapes how people live.

The world is a rival kingdom.

According to 2 Corinthians 4:4, “The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers.”

It’s not just a territory that Satan reigns over. It is a system of values that the enemy exerts daily pressure on.

Three Points Of Entry

John doesn’t hedge when he claims in 1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life, is not from the Father but is from the world.”

The desires of the flesh. The instinct for ease rather than suffering. Pleasure over obedience. Comfort over commitment. Satisfaction of the flesh. God says deny yourself and follow Me. These two voices are irreconcilable.

The desires of the eyes. Lust in its most basic definition. The world works hard to keep your eyes stimulated and your contentment hostage to what you don’t yet possess. Eve looked at the fruit and fell. David spied Bathsheba from the rooftop. The eyes are a doorway, and the world knows exactly how to manipulate them.

The pride of life. The subtlest lure of all. The pursuit of status, recognition, and acclaim. It drives men to build platforms and perform good deeds primarily so others can see it. R.C. Sproul identified pride as the root sin, the original sin, the sin that turned an angel into Satan. It certainly will not leave the believer untouched.

Two Loves Can’t Coexist

This is where scripture takes on a diagnostic role.

It is not grading your progress. It is questioning your standing.

James 4:4: “Friendship with the world is enmity with God.”

Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters.”

Two witnesses. Same verdict.

According to John MacArthur, “Loving the world is impossible for true believers because the world is an anti-God system, and you can’t love God and love the world.”

The issue is not perfect behavior. Believers still fall. The issue is the settled direction of the heart; where does your love ultimately run?

The Pressure To Conform

The world doesn't only tempt. It occupies.

Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

The Greek word for this action is syschēmatizō, which means to be pressed into a mold. J.B. Phillips paraphrases it, “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold.”

Martyn Lloyd-Jones identified the dynamics precisely: worldly conformity happens when believers forget who they are: called out of darkness, belonging to a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.

Worldliness is not primarily a behavior problem. It is a memory problem.

Read that again. Worldliness is not a behavior problem. It is a memory problem.

The answer to this threat, according to Paul Washer, lies in remembering God’s mercies towards us, the source of our sanctification. It starts with knowledge before anything else. Scripture is clear, transformation happens by presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice as Paul commands in Romans 12:1.

The World Is Passing Away

Don't miss this.

1 John 2:17 claims: “The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Present tense. This is already happening.

Everything the world offers: wealth, status, pleasure, power, is perishing even as humans continue their pursuit. To give your heart to the world is to love something already dead.

Sproul consistently warned that the Christian lives with an eternal perspective that reorders all temporal priorities. The resistance, the sacrifice, the cost of non-conformity; these are not losses. They are investments in a Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

The Antidote

Trying to control behavior with rules and regulations is totally ineffective.

However, the believer does have responsibilities.

Saturate your mind with Scripture. A mind devoted to the Word sees the world as it is: temporary, deceptive, and passing. 1 Corinthians 7:31 warns, “The present form of this world is passing away.” A mind without Scripture is defenseless against a system it no longer sees clearly.

Let your heart be lifted. As Paul writes in Colossians 3:2, “Set your hearts on what is above, not on what is on earth.” Those who always think about the glory of Christ will not find themselves easily enticed by the world.

Remember the true cost of salvation. As Paul states in Galatians 1:4, “Who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age,” one who truly understands what Christ endured to rescue us from this present evil age does not run back to it willingly.

Where Is Your Heart Anchored?

The world will never stop pulling. That is not a shortcoming of the Christian life.

This is its battleground.

The question is not whether you will feel the tug. You will.

The question is where your heart is anchored.

1 John 2:17 gives a clear perspective: “Whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

This is God’s guarantee. It’s not the world’s offer.

And it will outlast anything the world is pawning.

“God works in mysterious ways.”

You may have heard this one. It is often used to discuss unanswered prayers, untimely tragedy, and unpleasant theology.

It sounds pious. It often serves as a cop-out for those who wish to discuss a God whose ways don’t make sense to us.

And, incidentally, it is not found anywhere in the Bible.

The Real Source

The phrase was originally used in a 1773 hymn, “Light Shining Out of Darkness”:

The opening verse:

“God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform.”

It is a lovely hymn, and Cowper was a man who wrote it from a place of deep suffering and deep faith.

It is a hymn, however, and nowhere to be found in the Bible. The theology that is often attached to this phrase is a far cry from the intent that Cowper originally meant to express.

What the Bible Has to Say About the Ways of God

The Bible is very clear about the ways of God. It is very, very specific:

Isaiah 46:10 “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.”

Romans 8:28 “For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.”

Ephesians 1:11 “Having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

These are not the words of a God who works in mysterious ways. These are the words of a God who works in sovereign ways, with perfect knowledge, perfect intentionality, and perfect authority over all that comes to pass.

What We Avoid by Calling It “Mysterious”

According to R.C. Sproul, in his book *The Holiness of God*:

“Holiness provokes hatred. The greater the holiness, the greater the human hostility toward it.”

God’s actions do not necessarily conform to our sense of what is fair. They do not reward in ways we consider just. They do not always spare the righteous from affliction, nor the wicked from prospering — at least, not in the short term.

This is not mysterious. It’s a holy God working on a timetable that’s longer than our own.

We use this term ‘mysterious’ because we think it’s humble. We use it because we don’t want to have to deal with the harder term: ‘sovereign.’ We don’t want to have to trust a God whose ways we cannot understand — that’s much harder.

The Takeaway

The God of Scripture does not shrug His shoulders. The God of Scripture does not work in ways that are aimless and purposeless. The God of Scripture does not work in ways that are experimental, waiting to see how things will turn out.

He has declared the end from the beginning. His counsel will be carried out. His purpose will be fulfilled — with or without your theological comfort.

To get around the doctrine of election, the pastor said, “To God, a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day. God’s view of all of history is a flat line. God looks out over history, sees who believes in Christ on their own, and in that same instant writes their name in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

It sounded feasible, even biblical.

Of course, I knew that “a day is as a thousand years” was in the Bible, but I was troubled by the premise because it still put man in control of salvation.

And, that took away from God’s glory.

Yet, the corridor of time view is the main Arminian argument for refuting the doctrine of sovereign election.

Certainly God, in His omniscience, can look through all of history. If He can see who believes in Christ on their own, and in that instant chooses them for salvation, then election would be nothing more than God’s reaction to our personal choice.

The appeal of this argument is obvious.

It leaves man with his free will - in direct contrast to several Bible verses that say otherwise: John 1:13 and Romans 9:16.

It also boosts God’s reputation of fairness - as if He needed our help, and

we get to feel good about having contributed something to our salvation.

Win, win, win!

But, it also makes God a slave to our will. He surveys the field of human decisions, identifies the believing ones, and obligingly ratifies their choices.

The sovereignty is not His.

The initiative is not His.

The distinguishing factor between the elect and the non-elect is…you.

Doesn’t that also violate the whole “not as a results of works” concept in Ephesians 2:8-9? I mean, we’re good enough to accept Christ, and He in turn accepts us?

That’s not election. That’s ratification. That’s acquiescence.

We are called “the elect,” “appointed,” “the chosen.”

If we’re the ones making the determinations, shouldn’t we be called “the volunteers,” “responsive ones,” or “the decisive ones?”

Does not ratification do something the corridor view never admits: it makes salvation the sole province of the saved and robs God of His glory.

The debate lives or dies on one text: Romans 8:29.

Foreknowledge Is Not a Telescope

“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” (Romans 8:29, ESV)

The corridor view understands “foreknew” as omniscient advance-knowledge:

God observed your future faith and acted on it. That reading of “foreknew” imposes a modern Western definition of knowing on a biblical concept that never bore it.

Biblical knowing is never mere cognitive awareness. It’s relational. Covenantal. Even intimate.

This is impossible to miss in Genesis 4:1 when it says, “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived.” Nobody over the age of 14 interprets those words intellectually. This does not mean that Adam knew who Eve was. Adam was in the most intimate relationship that human beings can have with each other.

The Greek for “foreknew,” γινώσκω (ginōskō), simply takes this directly from the Hebrew יָדַע (yada). Paul creates the word προγινώσκω (proginōskō) out of the same root. He simply adds the prefix “προ”, which means before. Before time. Before creation. Before you existed. Before you could even do good or choose for yourself.

Foreknew is not the same as God looked ahead and saw your faith. It is the same as God set His covenantal love upon you before the foundation of the world.

Fore-love, not fore-sight.

The concept of foreknowledge being the same as omniscience is so theological-sounding. But, in reality, it takes away the sovereignty of God. It is no longer an act of covenantal love.

The Flat Continuum Argument Fails Twice

2 Peter 3:8 is about God’s patience with our concept of time. Peter is simply explaining to the early Church why the Lord has not yet returned. He is giving a reason, but that reason is not related to salvation.

But here’s the rub. Revelation 13:8 tells us names were written in the Lamb's Book of Life "before the foundation of the world."

Not at the moment you believe. Before the foundation of the world. Before any faith existed to foresee.

Even on a flat continuum, causality still runs in one direction. If your faith caused the writing, the writing cannot come before your faith. Yet Scripture says it does.

The Chain Has No Human Link

Let’s consider the verbs in Romans 8:29-30: “Those whom He foreknew he also predestined... those whom he predestined He also called, and those whom He called he also justified, and those whom He justified he also glorified.”

All of these verbs have only one subject: God.

God is acting.

God is not reacting to something that man is doing.

God Uses Volitional Language, Not Observational Language

This is why the Corridor View cannot survive.

Acts 13:48 is our final word: “as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.” Not “as many as believed were appointed.” Luke’s sequence is deliberate.

The Greek word “tetagmenoi” is a perfect passive participle. It means “already appointed,” appointment complete, before any believing took place. Faith follows appointment. Appointment does not follow faith.

God doesn’t look down the corridor and ratify. He appoints, and the appointed believe.

What This Does to Worship

The whole of Ephesians 1 is building up to one refrain, repeated three times: “to the praise of his glorious grace.” Not to the praise of your wise choosing. Not to the praise of your spiritual discernment. To the praise of His grace alone.

The corridor model cannot arrive at this conclusion. If the election is ultimately up to your decision, then the glory of your salvation is ultimately up to something in you. You made the right decision. Someone else didn’t. What sets you apart is you.

The whole system of salvation was designed to keep this from happening, according to 1 Corinthians 1:29: “so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.” But the corridor model slips this in anyway.

Worship the Author, Not the Responder

Romans 8:29 does not say that God saw your faith and then responded. It says God fore-loved you and then determined your destiny before you existed.

Revelation 13:8 does not say that God saw your choice and then recorded it. It says your name was recorded before the foundation of the world.

Acts 13:48 does not say that the believers were then appointed. It says that the appointed then believed.

The Author of your salvation is not a careful observer of your spiritual performance.

The Author of your salvation is the sovereign God of the Bible, who set His covenantal love upon you before time began. Not because He saw something in you that He wanted to choose. But because He chose you of His own desire.

The corridor view does not have the option of saying that. It can only say that God saw something. God responded. God recorded it.

God is either the Author of your salvation or merely a witness to it.

The corridor view makes Him the latter.

Drop the phrase “money is the root of all evil” into any conversation, and watch how quickly everyone nods.

They are confident it’s in the Bible. They are equally sure they know what it means.

They are wrong on both accounts; that error has done enormous theological damage.

What Paul Actually Wrote

1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”

A few words dropped — and everything changes.

The first: “the love of.” Paul is not indicting money itself. He is accusing the heart oriented toward the pursuit and possession of money as an end in itself.

The second: “kinds of.” This is not a declaration that money is the singular taproot of every evil in the universe. It is a warning that the love of money opens a door to a wide range of destructive consequences.

Abraham Was Rich. So Was Job.

Money is morally neutral.

Abraham was extraordinarily wealthy, “very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold” (Genesis 13:2). It was God who gave him that wealth.

Job was the wealthiest man in his region.

God allowed Satan to strip it all: his livestock, his servants, his children, even his health. Every visible sign of blessing gone. But when Job’s faith held, God restored him two times over: more sons and daughters, twice the livestock, a greater legacy than before (Job 42:10–17).

God gave wealth. God took it. God restored it, He even multiplied it.

The Bible does not condemn wealth. It confronts the worship of it.

The Real Target

Charles Spurgeon wrote in John Ploughman’s Talk: Plain Advice for Plain People:

“Many save their silver, but lose their souls. Many a man’s soul has been ruined by his great love of money, although he had but little money to love.”

Spurgeon put it plainly: a man can save his silver and lose his soul. He can have almost nothing and still be ruined by his love of it.

The issue was never the amount. It was always the grip.

The man whose thoughts are consumed with accumulation, whose identity is tied to his net worth, whose generosity is calculated and minimal, that man is in the crosshairs of this verse.

Matthew 6:24: “You cannot serve God and money.”

Note the verb: serve. The question is not what you have.

It’s what has you.

The Takeaway

This distortion has produced guilt in the generous and theological cover for the covetous.

The God of the Bible has no quarrel with your bank account. He has everything to say about what your bank account has on you.

And it is, without a doubt, the most difficult.

There is a fault line running through evangelical Christianity that most people in the pew never see.

It doesn't split liberals from conservatives. It doesn't divide the secular from the devout. It runs straight through communities of serious, Bible-loving, Christ-exalting believers. John MacArthur named it in a single sentence: “The lordship controversy is a disagreement over the nature of true faith.”

It has been argued by brilliant men who love Scripture. Men whose books line the shelves of Reformed seminaries and Dispensational schools alike. Men who will spend eternity together, but who drew different conclusions about what it means to believe.

You need to understand what both sides actually believe, because the caricatures are worse than the disagreement.

Where Both Sides Agree

Before the division, the common ground. Both positions affirm:

Justification is by grace through faith alone, not by works.

Christ’s death is the only sufficient payment for sin.

Eternal life is a gift; no sinner earns it.

God requires no pre-salvation moral reformation.

Christians can and do sin, sometimes seriously.

This is not a debate between the gospel and a false gospel. Both traditions contain men who have trusted Christ, preached the cross, and given their lives to the Word.

The disagreement is over the nature of saving faith; that distinction, while internal to evangelicalism, carries enormous pastoral weight.

The Lordship Position

John MacArthur set off the modern controversy with The Gospel According to Jesus in 1988. His case was simple and pointed: Jesus never offered a low-cost, no-commitment gospel. He called sinners to follow Him, not merely decide about Him.

The Lordship position rests on nine convictions (as articulated by Grace Community Church):

Faith and repentance are inseparable. The gospel calls sinners to “repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21). Repentance is not a synonym for faith; it is a turning from sin that God Himself grants (2 Timothy 2:25).

Salvation is entirely God’s work. Even faith is a gift (Ephesians 2:1–5, 8). God does not offer a substandard faith that might later expire.

The object of faith is Christ Himself — not merely a creed or a promise. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). The call is to trust Him, not only facts about Him.

Saving faith involves personal commitment. Faith is not passive intellectual assent; it is wholehearted trust in Christ personally (2 Corinthians 5:15). All true believers follow Jesus (John 10:27–28).

God’s gift of eternal life is comprehensive. It includes all that pertains to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3; Romans 8:32), not merely a ticket to heaven. Practical sanctification is not an optional post-conversion upgrade.

Christ cannot be divided. He is not offered as Savior-only with Lordship optional for a later upgrade. “Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out” (John 6:37), but coming to Him means coming to Him as He is.

Surrender to Christ’s lordship is unconditional. Jesus is Lord of all; the faith He demands involves full surrender (Romans 6:17–18; 10:9–10). Christ does not bestow eternal life on those whose hearts remain set against Him (James 4:6).

Real faith endures. Genuine saving faith cannot be defective or short-lived; it perseveres (Philippians 1:6; cf. Hebrews 11). A faith that completely ceases is no saving faith at all.

Genuine faith produces fruit. Not as the cause of salvation, but as its inevitable evidence. “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments” (1 John 2:3). As MacArthur states plainly: obedience is the inevitable manifestation of saving faith.

The pastoral danger Lordship proponents identify is sobering: a church filled with people who made decisions but were never transformed. Justification without sanctification. A profession without a possessor.

The Free Grace Position

The Free Grace tradition is not populated with theological lightweights. Charles Ryrie, longtime professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, author of the Ryrie Study Bible, scholar of the first order, wrote the most rigorous response to MacArthur: So Great Salvation (1989).

Lewis Sperry Chafer, the founder of Dallas Theological Seminary, held Free Grace convictions and embedded them in the institution’s theological DNA. Bob Wilkin, founder of the Grace Evangelical Society, has argued the position in the Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society for decades. Dave Anderson, in Free Grace Soteriology, argues it with academic precision. These are not careless men. They are scholars who gave their lives to the Word of God and arrived at their conclusions through serious exegesis, not through a desire to make the gospel easy.

The Free Grace position rests on eight convictions (synthesized from the primary works of Ryrie, Wilkin, and Anderson — the tradition's most rigorous defenders):

Faith is trust in Christ’s promise of eternal life; nothing more, nothing less. Adding repentance-as-behavioral-change or lordship-submission to faith adulterates grace with works. The gospel invitation is a free gift received through trust alone (Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 4:5). Any condition beyond faith corrupts the freeness of grace itself.

The Gospel of John is the Bible’s primary evangelistic document; and the word “repent” never appears in it. John states his purpose explicitly: “These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30–31). If behavioral repentance were required for salvation, John’s silence is inexplicable. Free Grace theologians argue this omission is exegetically decisive; the evangelist most concerned with bringing people to faith never once issued a call to behavioral repentance.

Repentance (metanoia) means a change of mind, not a change of behavior. Ryrie argues that on the day of Pentecost, Peter called the crowd to change their minds about who Jesus was: from a blasphemer to the God-man Savior. That is the repentance that saves (Acts 2:38). Behavioral change is the fruit of repentance, not its definition. Conflating the two imports a human work into the gospel invitation and corrupts the terms of salvation.

Justification is a forensic declaration; it must be distinguished from sanctification. God declares the believing sinner righteous on the basis of Christ’s imputed righteousness (Romans 4:5; Romans 5:1). Justification is complete and final at the moment of faith. Sanctification, the ongoing process of growth, is real but categorically separate. Demanding visible evidence of sanctification as proof of justification collapses a distinction Paul labored throughout Romans and Galatians to establish.

The object of saving faith is the promise of eternal life, received at a specific moment. “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life” (John 6:47). “Whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Free Grace theologians argue these promises are unconditional; the only condition is belief. Eternal life is a present possession, not a future reward contingent on perseverance or ongoing surrender.

The “carnal Christian” is a biblical category, not a theological convenience. Paul addresses the Corinthians as genuine believers who are living like the unsaved (1 Corinthians 3:1–3). Free Grace theologians argue that prolonged spiritual stagnation in a true believer is a real and tragic possibility; but, it is not evidence of a false profession. Dismissing this category as exegetically untenable, they contend, requires overriding Paul’s plain language to people he explicitly calls brothers.

Every Christian will bear fruit — but fruit may not always be visible to human observers. Ryrie is explicit: “Every Christian will bear spiritual fruit. Somewhere, sometime, somehow. Otherwise that person is not a believer.” Free Grace is not a license for fruitlessness. However, Free Grace theologians argue that what qualifies as fruit is broader and sometimes less observable than Lordship advocates allow. Subjective fruit inspection by outside observers is an unreliable and pastorally dangerous standard for assessing the reality of another person’s salvation.

Assurance comes from the promise, not from performance. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life” (John 3:36). Free Grace theologians note that the same verse’s second clause — rendered by the ESV as “whoever does not obey” — reflects a disputed translation of the Greek apeithōn, which they argue is better rendered “whoever does not believe.” On their reading the verse is a pure faith contrast: belief yields life; unbelief yields wrath. No obedience metric is in view. Assurance is therefore grounded in God’s word to the one who believes, not in the believer’s track record of surrender, fruit production, or observable transformation (1 John 5:13). Grounding assurance in evidence of sanctification, they argue, turns the believer perpetually inward — away from Christ and toward self-assessment — producing exactly the doubt and introspection the promise was designed to eliminate.

The pastoral concern Free Grace advocates raise is equally serious: a church full of doubting, introspective believers who can never be certain they are saved because they can never be certain they have surrendered enough. Ryrie’s concern was not to cheapen grace but to protect it; to ensure the ground of assurance remained the promise of God and not the performance of man.

Where the Real Division Lives

Both sides agree Jesus is Lord.

Both sides agree faith without fruit is dead.

The fault line is narrower than the polemics suggest; yet, it is real.

On repentance: Lordship says turning from sin is inseparable from genuine saving faith. Free Grace says behavioral repentance added to faith corrupts the gospel’s freeness.

On lordship: Lordship says you cannot receive a divided Christ, Savior without Master. Free Grace says requiring submission to Christ’s authority before salvation mixes discipleship with justification.

On assurance: Lordship grounds assurance in the fruit of regeneration over time. Free Grace grounds assurance in the promise of God to those who believe, full stop.

On the “carnal Christian”: Lordship says this category is exegetically untenable: a true believer cannot live indefinitely as though unregenerate. Free Grace allows for the possibility of prolonged spiritual stagnation in a genuine believer.

The Pastoral Stakes

This debate is not academic. It shapes how you evangelize, how you counsel, and how you disciple.

A Lordship evangelist calls sinners to repent and submit. A Free Grace evangelist calls sinners to trust. The content of the gospel invitation differs at the point of demand.

A Lordship pastor counseling a professing Christian living in unrepentant sin may question whether that person was ever regenerated. A Free Grace pastor will call the same person to discipleship, but may not question the reality of their salvation.

Neither pastor takes sin lightly. But they may arrive at different pastoral judgments.

My Position — And Why It Isn’t Simple

I hold the Lordship position. I want to be honest with you about what that means, and what it costs me to say it.

Charles Ryrie was not a lightweight. He held a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, taught for decades at Dallas Theological Seminary, and wrote some of the most carefully reasoned theology in the twentieth century. Lewis Sperry Chafer founded DTS. Dave Anderson is a serious exegete. These men gave their lives to the Word of God. They were not cutting corners on grace; they were guarding it as they understood it.

That is precisely what makes this debate hard.

If Free Grace theology were promoted by careless men, I could dismiss it quickly.

It isn’t.

And I cannot pretend that Ryrie’s concern is without force: that a Lordship framework, taken too far, can leave sincere believers perpetually questioning whether they have surrendered enough, whether their fruit is sufficient, whether their commitment was real. That is a genuine pastoral danger.

I am also aware that I cannot always draw a clean line between where Free Grace truth ends and Lordship truth begins. Both traditions affirm that faith saves. Both affirm that fruit follows. The argument is over what the summons of the gospel includes; and honest men have read the same texts and landed differently.

What I keep returning to is this: the texts will not let me rest in a gospel with no summons.

Matthew 16:24 records Christ’s own invitation: “If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” That is not the discipleship curriculum. That is the door.

James 2:17 does not soften it: “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” Dead faith is not saving faith. The fruit is not the root, but a root producing no fruit is not living.

Romans 10:9 frames everything: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Lord is in the text. It is not an elective.

Arminianism does not trouble me: God’s sovereignty over salvation answers it.

Covenant Theology also does not trouble me: literal, consistent interpretation answers it.

Free Grace troubles me. The fragments of truth it holds are real enough that I cannot yet draw a clean line between where it ends and where Lordship begins.

I land on Lordship not because I think Free Grace men are outside the faith; I do not.

I cannot find a Bible that offers a Christ you may receive without receiving Him as He is. Savior and Lord are not two products from the same shelf. He is one Person. You come to Him whole; or you have not come to Him at all.

Where exactly the line falls between a tender, wavering faith and a dead one — God knows.

I do not.

That uncertainty keeps me humble about individuals. It does not move me from the position.
